This is my favorite time of year, welcoming
yet another fantastic week
of Fringe! This grassroots movement
that started in Edinburgh, Scotland in
1947 has spread across the world,
creating an outlet to celebrate artistic
expression. 2010 marks the SIXTH
year of Fringe in Kansas City. Our
goal is to engage the community in
the heart and soul of human culture
— creativity and artistic expression.
The Fringe allows artists to present
their work in a truly creative and
free environment.
I am so excited to welcome 126 artist
entries from around the world to
Kansas City. The Fringe team has taken
steps to make this year’s festival
more accessible than ever. With new
venues, entertainment for the whole family, and many more shows, Fringe
is more vibrant than ever. This is the “must do” event of the summer.
I want to thank the venues who have opened their doors to us, the production
staff, tech crews, box office volunteers and especially the volunteer
Committee of Operations. This event couldn’t happen without them, nor
could it happen without you. Most of all, I want to thank all the artists.
Without their willingness to participate none of this would happen. And
I know they would like me to thank you, the audience, for giving them a
chance to hear ‘their voice’.
Treat yourself. Take a chance and try something new and unexpected.
Wishing you the best Fringe ever. — Cheryl Kimmi

Volunteers are the cornerstone of the KC Fringe Festival. Each year the efforts of our volunteers are integral
to the success of the Fringe. Volunteers assist with selling merchandise and concessions, operating our info and
ticket booths at Fringe 411 in Crown Center and Fringe Central, running the various theatrical venues, and in
many other capacities.
Volunteer shifts are arranged in four-hour blocks. All volunteers are asked to volunteer for at least 1 shift, and attend
a prefestival training session. You can volunteer for as many shifts as you like, but take time to enjoy some of the
performances as well. During your shift we ask that you do not sit in on the performances, but return at a later
time to participate in the shows. For every hour of time you donate to the festival, you will earn Fringe Bucks,
good to exchange for Fringe Festival show tickets, and Fringe Festival merchandise. They can also be used during
a Silent Auction held at our Volunteer Appreciation Party in Mid-August.
For more information about volunteering just email Christa Danner at volunteers@kcfringe.org.
Linnea Larsen’s work is inspired by
experiences, people, places, dreams,
and process experimentation capturing
places and people in different
places in America and by events in
her life. Some works are mixed illustration,
photography, and digital art.
Other works are influenced by both
the Mid-Eastern Indian and Chinese
cultures that combine multi-cultural visual
elements to awaken the energies
which these symbols represent, and
to communicate the union of these
cultural perspectives.
Snapshots
A mixed-media show that gives you
a snapshot into my characters lives
through the use of different mediums.
My art comes from the love of various
mediums and a desire to mix them
up. This show will consist of sculptures
and photography created with and
enhanced by the use of these mediums.
Some of the mediums I use
include fabric, photography, glue,
starch, paint, and found objects. Each
piece tells a story through snapshots
of a moment in time of the character
you are meeting.
Born from an experiment about nude
CHERYL EVE
Jewelry and fashion can function as a material
reflection of a society. With the use of fabric and
metal, Cheryl questions the traditional concepts
of wear ability and the connections between apparel,
jewelry and the skin. The body works as a
site of display. The metal is laminated directly to
the skin, a three-dimensional canvas, holding the
clothing in place. This symbiotic relation between
the metal and the fabric become reminiscent to
the site for them to be fully understood. Artist
Edward Steichen has raised questions and/or
awareness about significant cultural issues
considering decadence and extravagance as
a conceptual project. Cheryl, as well, wants the
wearer to fall into a self-indulgent state, as the
jewels become part of the body and the outfit.
With her collection “Impressions,” Cheryl questions
the possibilities of adornment on the body,
boldness and what the future of fashion holds in
our cosmopolitan time.
ERICA SWORD
Erica’s collection is called Ascension Thread. Each
piece of Ascension Thread evolves from found
object, mythic stories, and that which is unnamed
but running through us all. This year’s collection
is ethereal and utilitarian at the same time.
GREENING X CHANGE
Greening X-Change was created as a way to
creatively reuse and repurpose commonly discarded
items. We give life to old clothes, pop
bottles, jewelry, bags, and anything else with an
interesting shape or texture. The finished products
range from romantic dresses, skirts and tops to
tailored asymmetrical vests and halters. Attention
to detail is very important. Pieces incorporate
custom stitching, ruching, hand embroidery and
unique screen printed designs. Even though their
clothing incorporates nontraditional materials,
style and beauty are not sacrificed.
HOUSE OF COCHON
House of Cochon is a local accessories design
company owned by Courtney Perry. Courtney
works in many mediums, but this year has chosen
to develop her Fringe line from the hard lines
of leather and crystals, balancing their edge
with soft lines in the dresses. Courtney is also
the fashion show coordinator and would like to
thank her friends, family and everyone involved
in Fringe for their love and support.
JESSY BERGMANN
Jessy’s design philosophy is that of manipulating
fabric and making it its own skin. She feels
that the manipulation of fabric which encompasses
the techniques of pleating, gathering,
ruffling or embroidery make her yearn for this
new texture which is created in the process, not
only enjoyed by the sense of touch but also
the sense of sight. The idea and use of color
is very soothing. She tends to have somewhat
of a “whimsical” perspective while creating/
designing the garments. The individual whom
she designs for is that of an “adventurous”
younger woman. While some of the designs
might be more everyday wear others tend to
be for a unique encounter.
KASHOLM
Kasholm’s design philosophy starts with think of
what is flattering, then what is the best asset
to be shown and design from those to point of
views. After that part is together the focus is
on fit and individuality.
KENDALL HERRING
Kendall is currently a student at the University
of Wisconsin majoring in Apparel Design &
Development. He is a Kansas City native, and
wants to thank his friends & family for supporting
him. He lives by the motto “I don’t design
clothes, I design my destiny.”
PROSE…BOUTIQUE
Prose…boutique celebrates the cyclical nature
of fashion. Our specialty is retro and vintage
clothing and accessories to be reinvented and
made relevant for the modern woman and man.
Wearing vintage fashion is not about costume;
it’s about classics. It’s about a fresh take on an
old standard. Prose... houses new collections
from local designers like Queen’s Rocket by
Jon Fulton Adams and original art from local
artists like Alex Espy. These new designs have a
modern sensibility with a quality that will stand
the test of time. Moving in a circle doesn’t have
to mean tracing the same path over and over
again. It means constantly moving forward and
reinventing the path every time.
LEE SATTERWHITE
Lee is a local designer whose Fringe collection
this year is a modern take on the past, with a
wink and a nudge to the 20’s and 40’s style
which inspires her work.
WM COUTURE
WM Couture is locally owned and produced
by Wendy McMillian, an ISU graduate with a
degree in Apparel Design. Her background is
extensive in the bridal industry. Working for a
wedding gown designer on the east coast she
has developed a keen sense of design, pattern
making and construction skills, and the meticulous
attention to detail that is necessary for the bridal
industry. Wendy now specializes in special occasion
dresses and has been producing the WM
Gary, William and “Little” John are trying to
make their way to Vegas in this universe of humorous
vignettes, interwoven comedy sketches,
and good, old fashioned, irreverent vulgarity.
A show full of a cast of characters you’ll love
to hate. No taboo topic requires the “sensitive”
approach. Your memories of this performance
will stay with you forever - probably in sweaty,
awkward dreams you’d rather not explain in
the morning. R
