Seventeenth SundayinOrdinary TimeJuly 29, 2012The Year of FaithLast time we looked at the first main “bookend” of Vatican II, the document on the liturgy publishedat the beginning of the Council; today we look at the last one, the document on the Church in themodern world, entitled Gaudium et Spes (“Joy and Hope”), published at the end of the Council. As youcan guess from the title, it contains a very optimistic, upbeat message which is this: the Church, as the bearerof Christ to the world, has the ability – and the duty – to offer the modern world the only thing that cantruly rescue it from its numerous problems. In that sense, it is a document that joins together a sober evaluationof all the things in modern life that pose great danger to human happiness with the thankful realizationthat the gospel of Jesus Christ, if taken to heart and obeyed in society, can allow mankind to create acivilization that makes the world more human.Gaudium et Spes takes note of the technological advances of the twentieth century and sees all thisprogress as potentially wonderful. Why the qualification? Why the bit of skepticism? So much economicand technological power often leads modern people to see God as irrelevant to their pursuits. The dividebetween what can be done and what should be done disappears so that nations simply do whatever theyplease – the powerful become even more powerful and the weaker are pushed ever more out of the way, leading to social unrest and misery. Vatican II offers this sobering evaluation of modern life: human progresswithout God, and the proper order of values that he teaches, is not really progress at all because it oftenleads to violence, misery, and victimization. As an extreme example, the invention of nuclear weaponswas an amazing feat of human ingenuity and technology, yet who would say that it made the world morehuman?Even more serious than this, however, is the problem that without God, man “remains a mystery tohimself,” unable to even figure out why he exists or what life is for. The greatest tragedy of all is for peopleto wander through life without any meaning. Only Jesus Christ can quench this thirst; only he can explainman to himself. And, of course, this is the only reason the Catholic Church exists. The modern worldneeds to hear the gospel, without which it is doomed to misery.Of all the Vatican II documents, Gaudium et Spes gives the widest “big picture.” What is lifeabout? What is faith for? Why is there a Catholic Church? How can peace and happiness be found? Althoughwritten fifty years ago, these questions are still at the forefront, perhaps in part since the message ofthe Council has gone largely unheeded.Fr. Gregory

Of course they were. The prophet Elisha fed a hundred men with twenty barley loaves in order to prove God’spower. This same miracle, now multiplied by more people fed by fewer loaves, is attributed to Jesus in all four Gospels. In today’s passage from John we even have the detail that the loaves were barley, reminding every pious Jew of thatmiracle that Elisha worked. Yet Jesus went into hiding when they wanted to make him king. It is the passage fromPaul’s Letter to the Ephesians that gives us the reason for this. The power of Jesus comes from God. It is not meantmerely to feed us, or to provide one group with a king. There is one Lord, one faith, one God and Father of all whoworks through Jesus Christ and through us all.Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
