Spherical roller bearing series (open design)A complete bearing rangeThe range of open and sealed SKF sphericalroller bearings covers all series currently indemand. Taking availability into account, thisconstitutes the most complete range on themarket.Narrow low-section bearings have betterspeed, space and weight characteristics. Widehigh-section bearings have higher load carryingcapacity.6100_EN.indd 6 06-10-09 13.45.31

SKF spherical roller bearingswithout sealsOpen bearings are available in sizes from 20to 1 800 mm bore diameter with either acylindrical or tapered bore to suit all mountingmethods. To facilitate efficient lubrication, most bearings are provided with an annulargroove and three lubrication holes in the outerring. The bearings are available in a wide numberof series designed to satisfy the followingselection criteria• load carrying capacity• combination of radial and axial loads• rotational speed• available space in the application.Sealed SKF spherical roller bearingsSKF sealed spherical roller bearings are availablewith a cylindrical bore for shaft diametersranging from 35 to 220 mm. Bearings with atapered bore are available for shaft diametersfrom 40 to 90 mm. Additional sizes can beproduced to special order. The seals, specially developed for sphericalroller bearings, effectively prevent contaminantsfrom entering into the rolling contactarea. This is not only true in operation, butalso during bearing installation, resulting inlong service life.A6100_EN.indd 7 06-10-09 13.45.35

Sealed SKF spherical rollerbearings – for demandingenvironmentsSealed SKF spherical roller bearings aredesigned to fulfil high demands on sealingefficiency and operational reliability underdifficult environmental conditions. The sealswere developed using computer simulations, making full use of the vast expertise withinthe SKF Group. They have been tested extensivelyin the laboratory and in the field andhave a proven record of reliable performanceand efficiency.Sealed SKF spherical roller bearings includedouble-lip, sheet steel reinforced seals anda grease fill that is appropriate to the operatingconditions.Sealed SKF spherical roller bearings areready to mount and lubricated for life to providelong service life within, in most cases, the samespace requirements as a standard open bearing.Advantages include a simplified bearingarrangement as well as the option to makethe arrangement more compact. Facilities forrelubrication are normally not required, eliminatingthe need to purchase and dispose ofbearing grease.Temperature limitsSealed SKF spherical roller bearings are suitablefor normal operating temperatures up to+110 °C (230 °F). Bearings for higher operatingtemperatures can be supplied uponrequest. In these cases, the grease and sealmaterial must be chosen accordingly. Otheroperating conditions such as speed may needto be considered as well. Please contact theSKF application engineering service for additionalinformation.Contamination resistanceDue to the robust and efficient integral seals, additional external seals are not necessary inmany applications, generally leading to morecompact bearing arrangements. If the operatingenvironment is harsh, external sealsshould be used († fig. 1).A sealed spherical roller bearing in an SNLplummer block housing with external sealsWell lubricatedBearings for normaloperating temperaturesand speeds are lubricatedwith SKF LGEP 2,a grease with a lithiumthickener. The greasehas excellent rust inhibitingproperties.Well protectedThe bearings have asheet steel reinforceddouble-lip seal on eachside. Seals can be madeof acrylonitrile-butadienerubber (NBR), hydrogenatednitrile rubber(HNBR) or fluoro rubber(FKM).Always reliableThe bearings are filledwith a high-qualitygrease, which is particularlysuitable for SKFspherical roller bearings.Integral seals contributeto efficient lubricationby keeping thelubricant inside thebearing.Fig. 1Solid contaminantsexcludedSealed SKF sphericalroller bearings provideexcellent protectionagainst contaminants.Contaminants can createindentations in racewaysand rollers, resulting inflaking and prematurefailure. Seals also protectthe bearing fromcontaminants duringhandling and mounting.Moisture cannot enterAdequate seals keepmoisture out of thebearing, which otherwisewould cause corrosionand considerabledamage to the raceways, leading to noiseand premature failure. The bearings are protectedfurther by the rustinhibiting properties ofthe lubricant.Rule of thumbSealed bearings do not need relubricationwhen• temperatures do not exceed+70 ºC (158 ºF)• the inner ring rotates• speeds are not more than 50 % of thelimiting speeds listed in the producttables.Additional information can be found inthe section “Lubrication and maintenance”starting on page 24.106100_EN.indd 10 06-10-09 13.45.50

SKF spherical rollerbearings for vibratoryapplicationsFor machines with inherent eccentric motionsuch as vibrating screens and compactors,SKF developed the range of standard sphericalroller bearings for vibratory applications. The bearings are available in the 223 serieswith either a cylindrical or tapered bore forshaft diameters ranging from 40 to 240 mm.Bearings with the current basic designshave been in service for more than a decadeand have been shown to considerably reduceoperating temperatures and extend service lifeof the machinery.Reinforced for tough operatingconditionsThe standard bearings for vibratory applicationshave a special clearance and are modifiedto cope with the shaft deflections encounteredin vibratory applications. They arecharacterized by a hardened floating guidering generally centred in the outer ring thatguides the highly wear-resistant, surfacehardenedwindow-type steel cages. The dull-yellowish coloured cages makethem distinguishable from bearings forstandard applications († fig. 2).To prevent fretting corrosion at the nonlocatingbearing position, a special versionwith a PTFE-coated cylindrical bore is available.Vibratory applications induce accelerationsof the rollers and cages in the bearings. Theseaccelerations put additional demands on thebearing and can cause a bearing for standardapplications to fail prematurely. SKF sphericalroller bearings for vibratory applications aredesigned to withstand these induced accelerations. The permissible acceleration dependson the lubricant and whether the accelerationis rotating or linear.Linear accelerationLinear acceleration occurs when a bearing issubjected to impact loads that hammer thecages. A typical linear acceleration is generatedwhen rail wheels are rolling over rail joints(† fig. 3b). An analogous application usingbearings for vibrating applications is a roadroller where the roller is vibrating against arelatively hard surface.SKF spherical roller bearings for vibratoryapplications offer decisive benefits:• Excellent performance in all types of vibratingmachinery.• SKF Explorer performance provides anopportunity to design more compactarrangements.• Excellent wear-resistant characteristics, even in contaminated environmentsDesignsDepending on their size, SKF spherical rollerbearings for vibratory applications incorporateone of the following internal designs:• E/VA405 consists of symmetrical rollers, two hardened window-type steel cagescentred on the inner ring and a floatingguide ring outside the cages.• EJA/VA405 consists of symmetrical rollers, two hardened window-type steel cagescentred on the outer ring via a floatingguide ring between the two roller rows.• CCJA/W33VA405 consists of symmetricalrollers, two hardened window-type steelcages centred on the outer ring via a floatingguide ring between the two roller rows.Internal designs of SKF spherical roller bearings for vibratory applicationsabExample of a bearing subjected to rotatingacceleration (a) and linear acceleration (b)Fig. 3Fig. 2ARotating accelerationThis type of acceleration is created in a bearingsubjected to a rotating outer ring load anda rotating acceleration field. This generatescyclic loads on the cages from the unloadedrollers. Typical examples are vibrating screensand planetary gears. SKF Explorer –the new performance classfor spherical roller bearingsHaving invented the spherical roller bearingmore than 80 years ago, SKF has been theleading manufacturer of these bearings eversince.Recently, SKF specialists from different disciplinescombined their knowledge and experienceto take one large step forward inbearing technology. And we are proud ofhaving made tomorrow’s bearing technologyavailable for our customers today. SKF Explorerbearings represent a significant breakthroughin performance. By studying the interrelationshipbetween each bearing component, SKFscientists were able to maximize the effectsof the lubricant and minimize the effects offriction, wear, and contamination.Bearings in the SKF Explorer performanceclass incorporate a number of improvementsincluding:A unique heat treatmentTogether with a refined heat treatment process, the new steel significantly improves thewear-resistance of SKF Explorer bearings. It does this while retaining the temperatureresistance and toughness of the bearings.Improved manufacturing processesImproved manufacturing processes haveenabled SKF to maintain tighter toleranceson all critical bearing parameters. To furtherimprove bearing performance, the finish ofall contact surfaces has been maximized tomaintain an optimum oil film.Bearing knowledgeSophisticated, proprietary software has enabledSKF design engineers to study internalbearing dynamics to an extent not possiblepreviously. This has led the way to refinements, which have been incorporated intoSKF Explorer bearings, to further optimizethe rolling element/raceway contacts. The materialThe steel used in SKF Explorer bearings isextraordinarily clean and homogeneous. It forms an excellent structure which does notgenerate stress peaks under load.126100_EN.indd 12 06-10-09 13.45.58

Efficient in all industrial segmentsIndustrial segments• Metallurgical• Mining and construction• Fluid machinery• Material handling• Industrial gearboxes• Textile industry• Railways• EnergyRequirements• Long service life• High load carrying capacity• Compact arrangements• Accommodate misalignment• Minimum maintenance• Reduced operating costs• Fewer unplanned stops• Environmental sustainability• High availability• Technical supportSolutionLong service life, high reliability, minimizedmaintenance and the ability to design compactarrangements have made SKF spherical rollerbearings indispensable in many industries. In addition to the industrial segments listedabove, SKF spherical roller bearings are alsoused in bridges, dam gates, electric motors, generators, plastic calenders, extruders, printingmachines, robots and many other applications.Because end users are recognizing thathigh quality bearings deliver an excellentreturn on investment, SKF spherical rollerbearings have become the preferred choicein new applications.Where maintenance canbe a nightmareTo get to the top is always a challenge, particularlyif the goal is the top of ski-lift masts inmidwinter when it is 30 degrees below zeroand the bearings have to be relubricated. Ifoperational reliability is to be achieved, thenit has to be done. Regular relubrication is amust if the bearings are to be kept from rustingbecause of condensation. In addition, safetyconsiderations call for regular inspections– a dangerous job high up in mountainousterrain and under difficult weather conditions. The introduction of SKF sealed sphericalroller bearings has made all the difference. It is now only necessary to perform maintenanceonce a season – before starting operation. The highly efficient seals reliably excludecondensation so that corrosion is no longera problem. It has also been possible to simplifythe arrangement, saving space and costs –as well as making handling and installationeasier.146100_EN.indd 14 06-10-09 13.46.07

Downsizing – more thanjust sizeA typical application for spherical roller bearingsis the winch of a traversing industrial lift.In this application the loads, deflections andstructural deformations call for rugged bearingsthat can function properly even undermisalignment.Arrangements with open spherical rollerbearings provided good service, but were toobulky and complicated to be considered completelysatisfactory. As a result, the open bearings were replacedwith SKF sealed spherical roller bearings, eliminating the need for external seals andcovers. This obviously saved space and also meantthat the bearings could be positioned 40 %closer to the drum, thus reducing shaftstresses. In fact, it was possible to reduce theshaft diameter by 20 % and use smallerbearings. The new compact bearing arrangementneeds only minimal maintenance and there isno loss of load lifting capacity. The result wasa 50 % savings of the total cost of the originalbearing arrangement.A156100_EN.indd 15 06-10-09 13.46.11

Selection of bearing sizeBearing lifeThe life-extending improvements embodiedin SKF Explorer spherical roller bearings canbest be understood using the SKF rating lifeequation. This calculation method constitutesan extension of the fatigue life theory developedby Lundberg and Palmgren and is betterable to predict bearing life. The SKF rating lifeequation was presented in the SKF GeneralCatalogue 6000 and is in accordance with ISO281:1990/Amd 2:2000. The equation to beused for roller bearings isL nm = a 1 a SKF L 10orq C w 10/3L nm = a 1 a SKF ––< P zIf the speed is constant, it is often preferableto calculate the life expressed in operatinghours using1 000 000 q C w 10/3L nmh = a 1 a SKF ––––––––– ––60 n < P zThe a SKF factorThe a SKF factor represents a very complexrelationship between various influencing factors:the fatigue load limit ratio, contamination andlubrication. Values of the fatigue load limit (P u )are provided in the tables. Lubrication conditionsare expressed by the viscosity ratio k. Valuesof a SKF can be obtained from diagram 1 fordifferent values of h c (P u /P) and k.For standard spherical roller bearings, thevalues in black on the x axis should be usedand for SKF Explorer bearings the values inblue on the x axis should be used. In fact, forSKF Explorer spherical roller bearings it hasbeen found appropriate to multiply h c (P u /P)by a factor of 1,4 as an expression of the lifeextending refinements of these bearings, andthe blue values correspond to this.Diagram 1 has been drawn up for a safetyfactor commonly used in fatigue life considerationsand is valid for lubricants without EPadditives. If a lubricant containing such additivesis used, reference should be made to theSKF General Catalogue or to the SKF InteractiveEngineering Catalogue, available online atwww.skf.com.Equivalent dynamic bearing loadThe equivalent dynamic bearing load forspherical roller bearings can be obtained fromP = F r + Y 1 F a when F a /F r ≤ eP = 0,67 F r + Y 2 F a when F a /F r > ewhereP = equivalent dynamic bearing load, kNF r = actual radial bearing load, kNF a = actual axial bearing load, kNY 1 , Y 2 = axial load factors for thebearingse = calculation factorAppropriate values for the factors e, Y 1 and Y 2can be found in the bearing tables for eachindividual bearing.whereL nm = SKF rating life (at 100 – n 1) % reliability),millions of revolutionsL nmh = SKF rating life (at 100 – n 1) % reliability),operating hoursL 10 = basic rating life (at 90 % reliability),million revolutionsa 1 = life adjustment factor for reliability(† table 1)a SKF = SKF life modification factor(† diagram 1)C = basic dynamic load rating, kNP = equivalent dynamic bearing load, kNn = rotational speed, r/min1)The factor n represents the failure probability, i.e. the differencebetween the requisite reliability and 100 %Values for life adjustment factor a 1Table 1Reliability Failure SKF rating Factor% probability life a 1nL nm%90 10 L 10m 195 5 L 5m 0,6296 4 L 4m 0,5397 3 L 3m 0,4498 2 L 2m 0,3399 1 L 1m 0,21186100_EN.indd 18 06-10-09 13.46.19

The SKF self-aligningbearing systemThe SKF self-aligning bearing system consistsof a spherical roller bearing in the locatingposition and CARB ® toroidal roller bearingin the non-locating position († fig. 2).This bearing system accommodates misalignmentas well as axial movement of theshaft within the CARB bearing, virtually withoutfriction. As such, the outer rings of bothbearings can have a tight fit. Furthermore, there are no induced axial loads which otherwisecould be caused by the friction betweenthe sliding outer ring and the housing seating. The bearing system only has to supportexternal loads, which are more predictable. The benefits of SKF spherical roller bearingsand CARB bearings are fully utilized sothat engineers can attain the performancecharacteristics they need for faster, morecompact and robust designs. The SKF self-aligning bearing systemenhances reliability and performance. Producersas well as users of machines haveclearly reduced costs due to simpler designand increased productivity.Additional information can be found in theSKF brochure 4417 “Self-aligning bearingsystems”.Radial location of bearingsIf the load carrying ability of a bearing is to befully utilized, its rings must be evenly supportedaround the circumference and acrossthe whole width of the raceway. This supportmust be firm and even and can be providedby either a cylindrical or tapered seating.Sufficient support, as well as good radiallocation of the bearing, generally requiresa tight fit between the bearing rings and itsadjacent components. However, if easymounting and dismounting is required,or if a spherical roller bearing is in the nonlocatingposition, a tight fit cannot be applied.Additional information about fits and theaccuracy of bearing seatings can be found inthe SKF General Catalogue or online in theSKF Interactive Engineering Catalogue atwww.skf.com.Fig. 2SKF self-aligning bearing system using a sphericalroller bearing in the locating position and a CARBbearing in the non-locating position226100_EN.indd 22 06-10-09 13.46.21

Axial location of bearingsAn interference fit alone is generally not adequateto locate a spherical roller bearing ringaxially. As a rule, some suitable means of axiallysecuring the ring is needed. Both rings ofa locating bearing should be axially securedon both sides. For spherical roller bearings inthe non-locating position, on the other hand,it is sufficient if the ring having the tighter fit –usually the inner ring – is axially secured; theother ring must be free to move axially relativeto its seating († fig. 1 on page 21).Bearing rings having an interference fit aregenerally mounted so that the ring abuts ashoulder on the shaft or in the housing on oneside. On the opposite side, inner rings arenormally secured by a snap ring, shaft nut oran end plate attached to the shaft end. Outerrings are usually retained by the housing endcover († fig. 1 on page 21).The dimensions of the shaft and housingshoulders adjacent to the bearing must providesufficient support for the bearing rings, withoutmaking contact with rotating parts of the bearingor a stationary component. To keep thisfrom happening, appropriate abutment dimensionsare quoted for each individual bearinglisted in the product tables. If a sealed bearing is secured axially on theshaft by a lock nut, SKF recommends usinga KMFE lock nut or an intermediate ring positionedbetween the bearing and the lock nut(† fig. 3).Design of associatedcomponentsFor arrangements with large spherical rollerbearings it is often necessary to make designprovisions that enable the bearings to bemounted or dismounted easily. For example, withdrawal tools can be used to dismountbearings, if appropriate slots are machined inthe shaft and housing shoulders, or if threadedholes are provided in the housing shoulders. If the oil injection method is to be used tomount and dismount bearings on taperedjournals († fig. 4) or to dismount bearingsfrom cylindrical seatings († fig. 5), it is necessaryto provide an oil supply duct in the journaland a groove in the seating. Lubrication and maintenanceFig. 1Oil lubricationWhen oil is the lubricant, the oil bath or oilrecirculating methods are the two mostcommon.bearings are not available, SKF offers a fullrange of greases and tools to enable properlubrication of the bearing († section “Lubricantsand lubrication equipment” onpage 66).Oil bathThis is the most simple method of oil lubrication(† fig. 1). The oil, which is picked up bythe rotating components of the bearing, isdistributed within the bearing and then flowsback to the oil sump. The oil level should be such that it almostreaches the centre of the lowest roller whenthe bearing is stationary. Even under optimumoperating conditions, the oil must be changedat least once a year.RelubricationIt is only possible to determine relubricationintervals statistically. SKF bases its relubricationintervals on the time at which 99 % ofa seemingly identical lot of bearings are stillreliably lubricated, i.e. they correspond to anL 1 grease life which is the relubrication intervalt f . The L 10 grease life is approximatelytwice the L 1 life.If the L 10 grease life corresponds to, orexceeds, the L 10 life of the bearing, the bearingis considered to be lubricated for life andrelubrication is not required. The following recommendations are basedon the results of long-term tests in variousapplications. They do not apply where waterand/or particulate contaminants can penetrateSpherical roller bearing applicationlubricated by an oil bathSpherical roller bearing applicationlubricated by circulating oilFig. 2Circulating oilIn a recirculating system, the oil can be continuouslyfiltered and/or cooled († fig. 2).This significantly increases the service life ofthe oil, helping to avoid frequent oil changes. The circulation can be produced by a pump.In a recirculating system, ducts must be adequatelydimensioned so that the oil exits fromthe housing after passing through the bearing. An intermediate form of oil circulation isone where the oil is splashed up from the oilbath by other components, e.g. gears in agearbox.Technical data for SKF LGEP 2 greasePropertyThickenerColourBase oil typeTable 1SKF LGEP 2 greaseLithiumLight brownMineralGrease lubricationToday’s modern greases enable an increasingnumber of maintenance-free bearing applicationsto be lubricated for life. In such cases it isadvisable to replenish or renew the grease fillin the arrangement more frequently to removemoisture or other contaminants.Relubrication intervals for grease lubricated spherical roller bearingst f , operating hoursDiagram 1RelubricationThe relubrication intervals t f for bearings witha rotating inner ring on a horizontal shaft, operating under normal and clean conditions, can be obtained from diagram 1 as a functionof• the speed factor A multiplied by the relevantbearing factor b f whereA = n d mn = rotational speed, r/mind m = bearing mean diameter= 0,5 (d + D), mmb f = bearing factor depending onbearing type and load conditions(† table 2)• the load ratio C/P.BThe relubrication interval t f is an estimatedvalue, valid for an operating temperature of70 °C, using good quality greases with a lithiumthickener and mineral base oil. When bearingoperating conditions differ, adjust the relubricationintervals obtained from diagram 1.If the speed factor A exceeds a value of 70 %of the recommended limit († table 2), or ifambient temperatures are high, one mustcheck the operating temperature and determinewhether the appropriate lubricant wasapplied. This can be done by using the calculationsand graphs provided in the SKF GeneralCatalogue, section “Speeds and vibration”.When using high performance greases, longer relubrication intervals and extendedgrease life may be possible. The operating temperature varies between 60 and 70 °C(140 and 158 °F). The equivalent dynamic bearing load P = 71 kN and F a /F r < e. What is the correct lubrication interval? The bearing table on page 38 lists: d = 100 mm, D = 140 mm, C = 425 kN. Bearing mean diameter d m = (100 + 140)/2= 120 mm. Bearing factor b f = 2. Grease quantity for periodicrelubricationInitially, the bearing should be completelyfilled, while the free space in the housingshould be partly filled. Depending on theintended method of replenishment, the followinggrease fill percentages for the freespace in the housing are recommended:• 40 % when replenishing from the side ofan open bearing.• 20 % when replenishing through theannular groove and lubrication holes inthe bearing outer ring.Suitable quantities for replenishment fromthe side of an open bearing can be obtainedfromG p = 0,005 D Band for replenishment through the bearingouter or inner ring fromG p = 0,002 D Band for sealed bearings fromG p = 0,0015 D BwhereG p = grease quantity to be added whenreplenishing, gD = bearing outside diameter, mmB = total bearing width, mmGrease quantity for continuousrelubricationThe grease quantity to be continuously suppliedcan be obtained fromG k = (0,3 ... 0,5) D B ¥ 10 –4whereG k = grease quantity to be continuouslysupplied, g/hD = bearing outside diameter, mmB = total bearing width, mmContinuous relubrication can be efficientlyachieved using a SYSTEM 24 ® lubricator.Relubrication of sealedSKF spherical roller bearingsThe sealed spherical roller bearings shown inthe product tables (starting on page 56) havean annular groove and three lubrication holesas standard. To prevent the penetration ofmoisture, and to retain the grease in thebearing, a polymer band in the groove coversthe lubrication holes († fig. 3).If it is anticipated that bearing relubricationwill be necessary during operation, the bandshould be removed before the bearing ismounted. When relubricating, grease shouldbe applied slowly to the bearing as it rotatesuntil fresh grease emerges from the sealinglips. Excess pressure should be avoided toprevent seal damage. For additional details, see the SKF GeneralCatalogue or the SKF Interactive EngineeringCatalogue online at www.skf.com.The bearing must rotate during relubricationto achieve proper distribution of the grease.A polymer band in the annular groove covers thelubrication holes in the outer ring of sealedbearingsRetaining rings hold the sealsin the outer ringFig. 3 Fig. 4266100_EN.indd 26 06-10-09 13.46.24

MaintenanceThe seals of SKF spherical roller bearings witha bore diameter ≥ 110 mm are secured byretaining rings inserted in the outer ring(† fig. 4). The seals can be removed fromthe bearing so that the bearing can beinspected, washed and regreased, after whichthe seals can be reinserted and secured. Toavoid damage to the seals, this work shouldbe done with care, using blunt tools with nosharp edges.1. Remove the retaining ring by insertinga tool under the recessed end of theretaining ring († fig. 5) and pushing itout of the groove.2. Remove the second retaining ring asabove.3. Swivel the inner ring, so that the sealsare pushed out by the rollers.4. Wash the bearing, seals and retainingrings.5. Inspect all parts for wear and damage.6. Regrease the bearing with the inner ringswivelled out.7. Align the bearing parts and put the bearingon a clean surface for remounting theseals.8. Insert the seal as far as possible into itsgroove in the outer ring. Hold down thealready inserted part of the seal with onehand, press in the remainder stepwisewith the thumb of the other hand(† fig. 6).9. Mount the retaining ring by inserting therectangular end first. Holding this partdown, press in the remainder stepwisewith a tool, until the whole retaining ringproperly contacts the seal as shown infig. 410. Mount the second seal according to steps7 to 9.11. If the bearing is not going to be reusedimmediately, apply oil to all surfaces andmake sure that the bearing is packedproperly.AttentionSKF sealed spherical roller bearings canbe supplied with different seals. Particularattention is needed for high temperatureseals made of fluoro rubber (suffix2CS2). The fluoro rubber (FKM) of SKFseals is very stable and harmless undernormal operating conditions – up to+200 °C (392 °F). However, if exposed toextreme temperatures above +300 °C(572 °F), e.g. fire or the flame of a cuttingtorch, fluoro rubber emits dangeroustoxic vapours. Once overheated thefluoro rubber will remain dangerous tohandle even after it has cooled.BRemoving a retaining ringInserting the seal in the outer ringFig. 5 Fig. 6276100_EN.indd 27 06-10-09 13.46.25

Mounting and dismountingBearing storageBefore leaving the factory, SKF spherical rollerbearings are treated with a corrosion inhibitor. They can be stored in their unopened originalpackages for up to five years (three years forsealed bearings), provided the relative humidityin the store does not exceed 60 % († fig. 1).To avoid the risk of contamination and corrosion, the original packages should not beopened until immediately before mountingthe bearing.MountingSkill and cleanliness are essential whenmounting bearings, to make sure that theyperform satisfactorily and attain their fullpotential. Above all, the appropriate mountingmethod should be chosen and suitable toolsused. This is particularly important, wheresealed SKF spherical roller bearings are concerned, since misalignment of the inner ringrelative to the outer ring in excess of 0,5° maydamage the seals. For optimum results inmounting and dismounting bearings, SKFoffers a full range of tools and equipment. Please refer to the section “Related SKF products”starting on page 64.Bearings with a cylindrical boreWhen mounting bearings with a cylindricalbore, the ring with the tighter fit is normallymounted first. The force required to mount a bearingincreases with bearing size. Therefore, it is notalways possible to press large bearings ontoa cylindrical shaft or into a housing in the coldstate. In this case, either the inner ring or thehousing should be heated before mounting. To mount with an interference fit on a shaftthe bearing should be heated to some 80 to90 °C (140 to 160 °F) above the temperatureof the shaft. Please remember that sealedbearings should never be heated to more than110 °C (230 °F).The use of an SKF induction heater († fig. 2).has a number of advantages. It heats thebearing rapidly, and a built-in thermostatprevents overheating, which otherwise coulddamage the bearing. Non-metallic componentssuch as seals remain cold, as does the heateritself.Mounting bearings by cooling the shaft orthe bearing is not recommended, as the verylow temperatures required inevitably causecondensation, thus creating a risk of corrosion.Correct storage of bearingsSKF induction heaterFig. 1 Fig. 2286100_EN.indd 28 06-10-09 13.46.27

Bearings with a tapered boreBearings with a tapered bore are alwaysmounted with an interference fit on the shaft. They can be mounted on adapter or withdrawalsleeves or directly onto tapered journals. When dimensioning a tapered journal, thedistance between the centre of the bearingin its final mounted position and a referenceface on the shaft should be used as a basis(† fig. 3). When the dimension B a has beenestablished, the dimensioning of the journalshould be continued as described in the SKFcatalogue 4003 “Large bearings”.Spherical roller bearings up to a 200 mmbore diameter may be driven up onto atapered journal or a withdrawal sleeve usinga shaft nut and onto an adapter sleeve usingthe sleeve nut and a spanner († fig. 4).In applications with larger bearings, heavydrive-up forces are required. Mounting canbe facilitated using the oil injection method(† fig. 5). This requires an oil supply duct inthe journal and an oil distribution groove inthe bearing seating. To further reduce mountingeffort, SKF recommends using the oil injectionmethod in combination with an SKFhydraulic nut († fig. 8).For a bearing that will be mounted hot, itsfinal axial position on the shaft must be predetermined. This can be done by means of atailor-made spacer ring († fig. 6). When thebearing has cooled, it will obtain its correctinterference fit.The reduction in radial internal clearanceof open bearings or the axial displacementof the inner ring on its tapered seating is usedas a measure of the degree of interference(† fig. 7).Dimensioning of a tapered journalDrive-up of a large size bearing using the oilinjection methodFig. 3 Fig. 4Mounting of a medium sized bearingFig. 5B Fig. 7Tailor-made spacer ring used to positionthe bearing axiallyFig. 6Desired interference obtained by measuringclearance reduction or axial drive-up296100_EN.indd 29 06-10-09 13.46.28

Using traditional methods, the only wayto accurately mount sealed bearings with atapered bore, is to use the drive-up distanceas a measure. However, SKF has devised twoadditional methods that make installationaccurate and fast. The first is the SKF Drive-upMethod. This method allows a starting positionof the bearing to be easily and accuratelydetermined by applying a well-defined oilpressure to a hydraulic nut. The correct fit isthen achieved by controlling the axial drive-upfrom this position. The SKF Drive-up Method incorporates theuse of a hydraulic nut fitted with a dial indicatorto control the drive-up and a specially calibratedpressure gauge, mounted on the selectedpump († fig. 8).The second method of installation is to useSensorMount ® . SensorMount which useselectronics to control the inner ring drive-up,is easy to use, fast, reliable and does notrequire special mounting skills. The system comprises a bearing with asensor and a hand-held indicator. A signalfrom the sensor is picked up by the indicatorwhich displays a value representing the internalclearance reduction († fig. 9).As the indicator displays what is actuallyhappening with the bearing, it does not matterwhat material the seating is made of orwhether the shaft is solid or hollow. No additionalcalculations or tables are neededto achieve the proper drive-up distance.SensorMount is available for medium andlarge size bearings.Additional information about mountingspherical roller bearings, the SKF Drive-upMethod or SensorMount can be found• in the SKF Interactive EngineeringCatalogue online at www.skf.com• online at www.skf.com/mount.Mounting a bearing usingthe SKF Drive-up MethodMounting a bearing usingthe SensorMount methodFig. 8Fig. 9306100_EN.indd 30 06-10-09 13.46.30

Fig. 10Fig. 11BDismounting a bearing from a cylindrical seatingusing the oil injection methodDismounting a bearing from a taperedjournal using the SKF oil injection methodDismountingThe force required to remove a bearing fromits seating is generally greater than themounting force, particularly if, after a longperiod of service, fretting corrosion is present. If bearings or other associated components areto be reused after inspection, they must bedismounted as carefully as they were mounted, and the dismounting force should neverbe applied through the rolling elements.Bearings with a cylindrical boreSmall bearings can generally be removed usinga mechanical puller. The withdrawal tool shouldgrip over the rings from the inside or outsideand contact the side faces. When bearings with a bore diameter≥ 80 mm have been mounted on a shaftwith an interference fit, dismounting is considerablyeasier when the SKF oil injectionmethod is used († fig. 10).Bearings with a tapered boreTo remove spherical roller bearings fromtapered journals, the oil injection method isrecommended († fig. 11). The film of pressurisedoil separates the two mating surfacesand makes the bearing slide off easily.Bearings mounted on adapter or withdrawalsleeves are most easily removed using ahydraulic nut († fig. 12). By using sleeveswith oil ducts and oil distribution grooves, the oil injection method facilitates the removalof large bearings († fig. 13).Safety noteWhen using the oil injection methodto dismount a bearing from a taperedseating, be sure to block the end of theshaft with a lock nut or other suitabledevice to prevent the bearing fromfalling.Additional information about dismountingspherical roller bearings can be found• in the SKF Interactive EngineeringCatalogue online at www.skf.com• online at www.skf.com/mount.Dismounting bearings on adapter or withdrawalsleeves using hydraulic nutsFig. 12Dismounting a large size bearing ona withdrawal sleeve with oil ducts and groovesFig. 13316100_EN.indd 31 06-10-09 13.46.31

Thetapered bore of bearings in the 240, 241, 248and 249 series is 1:30. The tapered bore ofbearings in the other series is 1:12.Annular groove and lubrication holesEfficient lubrication of SKF spherical rollerbearings is facilitated by either• three lubrication holes and an annulargroove (E design or suffix W33) or• three lubrication holes without annulargroove (suffix W20).DimensionsThe boundary dimensions of SKF sphericalroller bearings with or without seals are inaccordance with ISO 15:1998, except for thewidth of sealed bearings in the BS2-22 series. These are basically bearings in the 222 E or222 CC series, but are slightly wider to integratethe seals.TolerancesSKF spherical roller bearings are manufacturedas standard to Normal tolerances.SKF Explorer spherical roller bearings up toand including 300 mm bore diameter are, however, produced to higher precision thanthe ISO Normal tolerances. For example• the width tolerance is considerably tighterthan the ISO Normal tolerance († SKFGeneral Catalogue 6000)• the running accuracy is to P5 toleranceclass as standard. For applications with larger bearings where runningaccuracy is a key operational parameter,SKF spherical roller bearings with P5 runningaccuracy are also available. These bearingsare identified by the suffix C08. Contact SKFfor availability. The tolerance for the bore and the outsidediameter of SKF Explorer spherical rollerbearings for vibratory applications has beentightened from Normal to P5 and P6 respectively. The values of the tolerances are in accordancewith ISO 492:2002.Internal clearanceSKF spherical roller bearings are manufacturedas standard with Normal radial internalclearance. Nearly all the bearings are alsoavailable with a larger C3 internal clearanceand some can be supplied with an even largerC4 or C5 clearance. Some sizes can be deliveredwith C2 internal clearance which issmaller than Normal. Contact SKF for availabilityof bearings with radial internal clearanceother than Normal before ordering. MisalignmentThe design of spherical roller bearings issuch that they are inherently self-aligning, i.e.angular misalignment between the outer ringand inner ring can be accommodated withoutany negative effect on bearing performance.Under normal operating conditions, i.e. loadratios of C/P > 10 and misalignment is constantin position instead of relative to the outer ring, the guideline values for permissible misalignmentof open bearings provided in table 3 apply.Whether or not these values can be fullyexploited depends on the design of the bearingarrangement, the type of external sealsused etc. When the position of misalignment is notconstant with respect to the bearing outerring, e.g. in• vibrating screens with rotating imbalanceand therefore rotating deflection of theshaft († fig. 1)• deflection-compensating rolls of papermachines where the stationary shaft is bentadditional sliding can occur in the bearing. Therefore, taking bearing friction and associatedheat generation into consideration, misalignmentof the inner ring relative to theouter ring should not exceed a few tenthsof a degree.Sealed bearings can accommodate angularmisalignment of the shaft relative to thehousing of up to 0,5° with no detrimentaleffect on the efficiency of the seals.Influence of operating temperatureon the bearing materialsSKF spherical roller bearing rings and rollersundergo a unique heat treatment process sothat they can withstand temperatures up to+200 °C (390 °F) for up to 2 500 hours, orbrief periods at even higher temperatures, without any inadmissible dimensional changesoccurring. If provision is made to accommodateslight changes of fits and clearance, evenhigher temperatures or longer periods can beaccommodated.Sealed SKF spherical roller bearings withstandard seals and grease should not be usedat operating temperatures above +110 °C(230 °F) as this would be detrimental to theseals and grease.Axial load carrying capacityBecause of their special internal design, SKFspherical roller bearings not only have lowerfriction than other spherical roller bearings, but they are also able to accommodate appreciablyheavier axial loads. However, if F a /F r > e(† product tables), more frequent lubricationis recommended.Speed ratingsDue to the friction generated by contact seals, the speed rating for a sealed bearing operatingwithin the normal temperature range is approximately40 % less than for a correspondingopen bearing.Table 3Permissible angular misalignment for openbearingsBearingseriesSizes 1)Permissibleangularmisalignment– degreesSeries 213 2Series 222Sizes < 52 2Sizes ≥ 52 1,5Series 231Sizes < 60 2Sizes ≥ 60 3Series 232Sizes < 52 2,5Sizes ≥ 52 3,5Series 238 1,5Series 239 1,5Series 240 2Series 241Sizes < 64 2,5Sizes ≥ 64 3,5Series 248 1,5Series 249 2,51)Last two figures of bearing designationsCFig. 1356100_EN.indd 35 06-10-09 13.46.34

Related SKF productsSpecial spherical rollerbearingsTheir robust design and high reliability makeSKF spherical roller bearings suitable for themajority of applications. However, extraordinarydemands call for bearings with extraordinaryfeatures. Therefore, the SKF standard rangeincludes special spherical roller bearings, which are adapted for specific applications:Sealed bearings for continuouscasting applicationsThese bearings are specially adapted for theheavy loads and high operating temperaturesand low speeds present in continuous castingslab guides. They feature seals made of fluororubber, and are filled with a very stable hightemperature grease, enabling maintenancefreeoperation in this demandingenvironment.Rolling mill bearingsRolling mill bearings must meet a variety ofdifferent demands. For cold tube mills (Pilgermills), for example, the bearings must be ableto withstand heavy acceleration forces, whereasfor finishing trains or wire mills, they must beable to be mounted and dismounted withease. SKF offers the appropriate sphericalroller bearings for these applications.SKF ConCentra bearing unitsThese plummer block type mounted bearingunits with SKF Explorer spherical roller bearingsin the 222 series on a special adaptersleeve are greased, sealed and ready to installas delivered. With the saw-tooth profile of theinner ring and adapter sleeve, the unit can bemounted and dismounted easily via the incorporatedscrews without having to use specialtools.See also SKF brochures 4954 “TheSKF Copperhead system solution forvibrating screens” and 6103 “SKFConCentra roller bearing units – trueconcentric locking, for fast and reliablemounting”.646100_EN.indd 64 06-10-09 13.46.59

AccessoriesAny system is only as strong as its weakestcomponent. Therefore, SKF offers not onlya wide range of high quality spherical rollerbearings, but also an appropriate range ofquality bearing accessories to go with them.Adapter and withdrawal sleevesAdapter and withdrawal sleeves are used tolocate bearings with a tapered bore on smoothor stepped shafts. They facilitate bearingmounting and dismounting and, in many cases, simplify bearing arrangement design.Several series of quality sleeves are includedin the SKF product range.Bearing housingsSKF offers a comprehensive range of highqualitystandard and custom housings designedto accommodate the various demands placedon the bearings which they house, e.g. load, accuracy, method of lubrication, type of lubricant, sealing etc.SKF housings and SKF spherical rollerbearings form an economic and interchangeableunit which meets the performancedemands of a bearing application.Lock nutsSKF lock nuts, also referred to as shaft nuts, are available in several designs to axiallylocate bearings on shaft ends. The most popularare those in the KM, KML and HM series. These nuts have four or eight equally spacedslots in the outside diameter and are lockedin position with locking washers or locking clipsengaging a groove in the shaft. The nut dimensionsare in accordance with ISO 2982-2:1995,as are the dimensions of the series MB andMBL locking washers.Other lock nuts produced by SKF includelock nuts in the KMT, KMTA, KMK and KMFEseries, that do not require a groove in the shaft.SKF withdrawal and adapter sleevesDSee also SKF catalogues 6005 and6006 for detailed information aboutbearing sleeves and lock nuts respectivelyand SKF brochures 6112 “SNLplummer block housings solve thehousing problems”, 6101 “SNL 30and SNL 31 plummer block housingssolve the housing problems” and6111 “SONL plummer block housingsdesigned for oil lubrication”.SKF lock nuts656100_EN.indd 65 06-10-09 13.47.04

Lubricants and lubricationequipmentSpherical roller bearings are required to operateunder a variety of load, speed, temperatureand environmental conditions. Theyrequire the type of high-quality lubricatinggreases, which SKF provides.SKF greases have been specially developedfor rolling bearings in their typical applications. The SKF range includes fifteen environmentallyfriendly greases and covers practically allapplication requirements. The range is complemented by a selectionof lubrication accessories including• automatic lubricators• grease guns• lubricant metering devices• a wide range of manually and pneumaticallyoperated grease pumps.Products for mountingand dismountingLike all rolling bearings, SKF spherical rollerbearings require a high degree of skill whenmounting or dismounting, as well as the correcttools and methods. The comprehensive SKF range of toolsand equipment includes everything thatis required• mechanical tools• heaters• hydraulic tools and equipment• pullers and withdrawal tools for all bearingsizes.SKF Drive-Up MethodSee also SKF catalogue MP3000“SKF Maintenance and LubricationProducts” or online atwww.mapro.skf.com.SKF lubricants:the best choice for any bearing666100_EN.indd 66 06-10-09 13.47.07

Condition monitoringequipmentThe goal of condition monitoring is to maximizeuptime, minimize unplanned downtime andreduce maintenance. To achieve this, SKF recommends monitoringthe bearing and other machine componentseither periodically or continuously. Conditionmonitoring enables incipient bearingdamage to be detected and evaluated, so thatbearing replacement can be scheduled for atime when the machine is not in operation,to avoid unplanned stoppages. Applied to allmachinery (not just sensitive or problematicmachines), condition monitoring optimizesmachinery utilization, often exceeding theoriginal equipment projections for service life.SKF provides a comprehensive range ofcondition monitoring equipment to measureall important parameters. These include• temperature• speed• noise• oil condition• shaft alignment• vibration• bearing condition.Products range from lightweight, handhelddevices, to sophisticated continuous monitoringsystems for fixed installations that can beintegrated into an existing proactive reliabilitymaintenance programme. One example is the MARLIN ® I-Pro datamanager, which is a rugged, high performancedata collector that enables plant operationspersonnel to quickly and easily collect, store and analyze overall machine vibration, process and inspection data. The unit enablestrending, comparison with previous readings, alarm alerts and more. SKF – the knowledgeengineering companyFrom the company that invented the selfaligningball bearing 100 years ago, SKF hasevolved into a knowledge engineering companythat is able to draw on five platformsto create unique solutions for its customers. These platforms include bearings, bearingunits and seals, of course, but extend to otherareas including: lubricants and lubricationsystems, critical for long bearing life in manyapplications; mechatronics that combinemechanical and electronics knowledge intosystems for more effective linear motion andsensorized solutions; and a full range of services, from design and logistics support to conditioningmonitoring and reliability systems.Though the scope has broadened, SKFcontinues to maintain the world’s leadershipin the design, manufacture and marketing ofrolling bearings, as well as complementaryproducts such as radial seals. SKF also holdsan increasingly important position in the marketfor linear motion products, high-precisionaerospace bearings, machine tool spindlesand plant maintenance services. The SKF Group is globally certified to ISO14001, the international standard for environmentalmanagement, as well as OHSAS18001, the health and safety managementstandard. Individual divisions have been approvedfor quality certification in accordancewith either ISO 9000 or QS 9000.With some 100 manufacturing sites worldwideand sales companies in 70 countries,SKF is a truly international corporation. Inaddition, our distributors and dealers insome 15 000 locations around the world,an e-business marketplace and a global distributionsystem put SKF close to customers forthe supply of both products and services. Inessence, SKF solutions are available whereverand whenever customers need them. Overall, the SKF brand and the corporation arestronger than ever. As the knowledge engineeringcompany, we stand ready to serveyou with world-class product competencies, intellectual resources, and the vision to helpyou succeed.© Airbus – photo: e x m company, H. GousséEvolving by-wire technologySKF has a unique expertise in fast-growing by-wiretechnology, from fly-by-wire, to drive-by-wire, towork-by-wire. SKF pioneered practical fly-by-wiretechnology and is a close working partner with allaerospace industry leaders. As an example, virtuallyall aircraft of the Airbus design use SKF by-wiresystems for cockpit flight control.SKF is also a leader in automotive by-wire technology, and has partnered with automotive engineers todevelop two concept cars, which employ SKF mechatronicsfor steering and braking. Further by-wiredevelopment has led SKF to produce an all-electricforklift truck, which uses mechatronics rather thanhydraulics for all controls.SealsBearingsand unitsLubricationsystemsMechatronicsServices686100_EN.indd 68 06-10-09 13.47.12

Harnessing wind powerThe growing industry of wind-generated electric power provides a source ofclean, green electricity. SKF is working closely with global industry leaders todevelop efficient and trouble-free turbines, providing a wide range of large, highlyspecialized bearings and condition monitoring systems to extend equipment lifeof wind farms located in even the most remote and inhospitable environments.Working in extreme environmentsIn frigid winters, especially in northern countries, extreme sub-zero temperaturescan cause bearings in railway axleboxes to seize due to lubrication starvation.SKF created a new family of synthetic lubricants formulated to retain theirlubrication viscosity even at these extreme temperatures. SKF knowledge enablesmanufacturers and end user customers to overcome the performance issuesresulting from extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold. For example, SKFproducts are at work in diverse environments such as baking ovens and instantfreezing in food processing plants.DDeveloping a cleaner cleanerThe electric motor and its bearings are the heart of many household appliances.SKF works closely with appliance manufacturers to improve their products’ performance, cut costs, reduce weight, and reduce energy consumption. A recentexample of this cooperation is a new generation of vacuum cleaners with substantiallymore suction. SKF knowledge in the area of small bearing technologyis also applied to manufacturers of power tools and office equipment.Maintaining a 350 km/h R&D labIn addition to SKF’s renowned research and development facilities in Europe andthe United States, Formula One car racing provides a unique environment forSKF to push the limits of bearing technology. For over 50 years, SKF products, engineering and knowledge have helped make Scuderia Ferrari a formidableforce in F1 racing. (The average racing Ferrari utilizes more than 150 SKF components.)Lessons learned here are applied to the products we provide to automakersand the aftermarket worldwide.Delivering Asset Efficiency OptimizationThrough SKF Reliability Systems, SKF provides a comprehensive range of assetefficiency products and services, from condition monitoring hardware and softwareto maintenance strategies, engineering assistance and machine reliabilityprograms. To optimize efficiency and boost productivity, some industrial facilitiesopt for an Integrated Maintenance Solution, in which SKF delivers all servicesunder one fixed-fee, performance-based contract.Planning for sustainable growthBy their very nature, bearings make a positive contribution to the natural environment, enabling machinery to operate more efficiently, consume less power, and require less lubrication. By raising the performance bar for our own products,SKF is enabling a new generation of high-efficiency products and equipment. With an eye to the future and the world we will leave to our children, theSKF Group policy on environment, health and safety, as well as the manufacturingtechniques, are planned and implemented to help protect and preserve theearth’s limited natural resources. We remain committed to sustainable, environmentallyresponsible growth.696100_EN.indd 69 06-10-09 13.47.14
