Preston Bryant Jr,Ms Janice Hadlow, the Lady Heseltine, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Fred Piper and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Jim Rose.It is particularly befitting that in the year when we are celebrating the Silver Jubilee <strong>of</strong> the merger <strong>of</strong><strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Holloway</strong> and Bedford Colleges as well as the 125th Anniversary <strong>of</strong> the founding <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Holloway</strong> College, <strong>Honorary</strong> <strong>Fellows</strong>hips are awarded to those who have enjoyed a longrelationship with <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Holloway</strong> be it as alumni or staff.The College greatly values its <strong>Honorary</strong> Members and their contribution to the life <strong>of</strong> the institutionand hopes that those accepting the honours today find fulfilment for many years to come in theirassociation with <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Holloway</strong>.1

<strong>Honorary</strong> <strong>Fellows</strong>Mr L. Preston Bryant Jr was awarded an MA in English Literary Studiesfrom <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Holloway</strong> in 1990. He is a founding member and President <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Holloway</strong> and Bedford College American Foundation. Preston is SeniorVice-President for Economic and Infrastructure Development at McGuireWoods Consulting, where he advises on a wide range <strong>of</strong> issues includingwater and wastewater facilities, conventional and renewable energy, andcommercial and industrial development. From 2005 to 2010 Preston wasSecretary <strong>of</strong> Natural Resources for the Commonwealth <strong>of</strong> Virginia and ledthe state’s six environmental, recreational, wildlife, and historic resourcesagencies with a staff <strong>of</strong> nearly 2,500 and a budget <strong>of</strong> approximately $400million. In 2009 he was appointed by President Obama as Chairman <strong>of</strong> theNational Capital Planning Commission, the central agency for all federal landsand buildings in Washington, DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia.Ms Janice Hadlow is a <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Holloway</strong> College alumna who has retainedlinks with the Department <strong>of</strong> Media Arts, which she opened in its revampedvenue in 2005. Since 2008 Janet has been Controller <strong>of</strong> BBC2. She wasController <strong>of</strong> BBC4 from 2004 until 2008 where successes included ‘LostDecade’, ‘Inside the Medieval Mind’, ‘Edwardians’, ‘Atom’, ‘Parallel Lives’,‘Blood and Guts’, ‘Arts <strong>of</strong> Eternity’, ‘Genius <strong>of</strong> Photography’, ‘The ChatterleyAffair’, ‘Vivaldi’s Women’ and ‘Fear <strong>of</strong> Fanny’. The channel’s achievementshave been recognised with awards for Non-terrestrial Channel <strong>of</strong> the Year(Broadcast 2008, MGEITF 2006). During Janice’s tenure, BBC4 createdhigh-pr<strong>of</strong>ile themed seasons which have transformed the impact <strong>of</strong> thefactual. Drama grew into one <strong>of</strong> the key treasures <strong>of</strong> the schedule and musicprogramming reached new heights <strong>of</strong> popularity.The Lady Heseltine is a Bedford College alumna (BA French and German).In the 1990s she agreed to be one <strong>of</strong> the original patrons <strong>of</strong> the Annual Fund.Anne is an art historian, having taken courses at the Courtauld and Christie’s.She co-ran an art gallery in St James’s and has been a Trustee <strong>of</strong> the NationalGallery since 2008. Previously she was a Trustee <strong>of</strong> both the Victoria andAlbert Museum and the Imperial War Museum. From 1988 to 2007 the6


Lady Heseltine was on the Board <strong>of</strong> Visitors for the Ashmolean Museum,Oxford, becoming Chair <strong>of</strong> its Fundraising Committee and a Fellow <strong>of</strong> theMuseum. In 1999 she received the Distinguished Friend <strong>of</strong> Oxford Awardfrom the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Oxford in recognition <strong>of</strong> her fundraising.Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Fred Piper is an internationally recognised authority oncryptography and information security. Prior to the 1970s cryptography wasregarded as a ‘black art’ practised almost exclusively by governments, themilitary and financial institutions. Fred was one <strong>of</strong> the main forces in the driveto make cryptography more widely understood not only by practitioners butalso by academics and the general public. Fred was awarded a First ClassHonours degree in Mathematics at Imperial College in 1962 followed by aPhD in 1964. He is Director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Holloway</strong> Information Security Groupthat was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and FurtherEducation in 1998. Fred has served on a number <strong>of</strong> committees <strong>of</strong>feringsecurity advice to the UK’s Department <strong>of</strong> Trade and Industry. In 2002 he wasawarded the first, and so far the only one, honorary CISSP for a European, forleadership in information security. Fred is a member <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Trusteesat Bletchley Park.Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Jim Rose joined <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Holloway</strong> in 1989 as Head <strong>of</strong> theDepartment <strong>of</strong> Geography. Under his leadership the Department became one<strong>of</strong> the top Geography Departments in the UK with a worldwide reputation.Within his field <strong>of</strong> research Jim has contributed to our understanding <strong>of</strong> howglaciers and rivers shape the landscape and how the landscape has changedover recent geological time, including the discovery <strong>of</strong> the largest river thatexisted in Britain before glaciations. This discovery subsequently proved to be<strong>of</strong> significance in providing the evidence for the earliest humans in northernlatitudes, which has totally changed our understanding <strong>of</strong> human activity anddevelopment. Jim has also acted as member and chair <strong>of</strong> research councilscommittees, deputy chair <strong>of</strong> UK and Netherlands Research AssessmentExercises for Geography and Earth Sciences respectively, Earth ScienceAdvisor to Natural England and a member <strong>of</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Holloway</strong>.7
