The UT stadium couldhave been expanded without jeopardizing the century-oldcypresses along the creek. Unfortunately,the university felt that it also needed a four-laneroad (San Jacinto Boulevard) running through campus.Since there wasn’t room enough for trees,four lanes, and the stadium expansion (the effortsof us “rioters” notwithstanding), the trees were cutdown. Ironically, within a couple of years, universityadministrators realized that it was colossallystupid to have four lanes running through campus,so they reduced San Jacinto to two lanes withrestricted access. Yeah,that cold dead hand is unfortunately true – butammo, is that a constitutional right? I freely cannotpurchase pseudoephed, but a handful of hollowpoints? No problem. A decade or so ago, a RoundRock middle school student via the Web successfullycreated a PVC firearm complete with ammo.The thing is, he misaimed and hit himself. It, along with severalother fast-food eateries on Lamar – andrecently lost longtime businesses, such asRay Hennig’s Heart of Texas Music and SouthAustin Machine Shop – have served the communitywell with services and employment fora long time, much more than Barley Swinewill. It’s a shame longtime residents and businessesare being displaced by the likes ofyou, trying so hard to be the real Austin andtotally missing the mark. Hell, not even seeingthe mark.You are not South Austin, only a continuationof the plague spreading from Downtown.South Austin is a way of life and an attitudethe likes of you will never understand. Not only haveyou actually written about fashion, but you havereturned to design, yourself.You are showing a strength of spirit in the faceof a terrible illness within your words. And, in myopinion, all that you have dealt with has madeyou more eloquent.Just to let you know where I’m coming from – Iwrite, myself. Never professionally, but I do lovewriting. I’m the son of an English teacher.I have dabbled in fashion design (a long timeago), have sold men’s clothing, was a hairdresserfor 10 years, and am currently on my way tobegin designing some very strange jewelry.
