More with Terry Allen at austinchronicle.com/earacheTerry AllenWhile Terry Allen took 14 years between albums – his latest,Bottom of the World, comes out next month – he wasn’t waitingaround for his muse. For starters, the Lubbock Mafiadon, who’s long called Santa Fe, N.M., home, producedtwo huge theatre pieces. He shies away from the termmultimedia, but both Dugout and Ghost Ship Rodezinvolved theatre, film, music, and painting.“I write all the time,” explains the composer, “but visualart, theatre, and music are all pretty much one thing for me.Focusing on one can bring a whole clutch of the others. SoI don’t really make a lot of designations between the differentgroups. It’s just one thing. I just took my time puttingthese songs together while I was doing other things.”Although his lyrics can be dense, Allen’s songs tendtoward the cinematic, an outgrowth of his work in thevisual arts. The harrowing, starkly drawn “EmergencyHuman Blood Courier” constitutes one such exampleon Bottom of the World.“When you have a song, you’re taking specific imagesand editing them in a concise way,” he relates. “It’s similarto a movie. They just take much more time in editingand in the process. For me, songs are very visual, in thesense that they’re like little movies.“Speaking of movies, I just found out that‘Emergency Human Blood Courier’ ends a new Irishmovie about the women who have been murdered inJuárez, Mexico.”At the Cactus, Allen will be joined by most of the playersfrom his new disc: son Bukka Allen, cellist BrianStandefer, and fiddler Richard Bowden. Along with coproducerLloyd Maines, they give Bottom of the Worldhaunted overtones.“It’s always a collaboration. I’ve worked with theseguys so long that sound just happens.” – Jim CaligiuriCactus Cafe, Friday 18Jack OblivianHotel Vegas, Friday 18Although 2011’s Rat City noddedtoward Son of Sam-era NYC, JackOblivian’s grunt-laden garage rockremains an indelible part of Memphis’formidable musical legacy.
