VISITATION, ELMHURST, IL DECEMBER 25, 2006Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,“He shall be Peace.” (Micah 5:4)On this hectic Fourth Sunday of Advent, which in a fewhours will become Christmas Eve, the Church placesbefore us the Gospel account of the Visitation of Mary toElizabeth. This story has special meaning for us as ourparish is dedicated to this joyful mystery. This story alsocaptures well the feelings of hurriedness many of us feeltoday as we are told that Mary “traveled to the hill countryin haste” to visit her cousin. We have to remember that thisfollows soon after Mary had been told by the angel Gabrielthat she was to be the virgin mother of the Son of God. Yetdespite the momentous news and her physical condition,Mary goes immediately to Elizabeth to help her in herneed and the two share the wonder of all that God haddone for them.So in the final hours of preparation for the celebrationof Christmas, let us keep this story of the Visitation in ourminds. Whether finishing the last bit of shopping, or decoratingor cooking, we need to open our hearts the spiritof peace and joy that filled Mary and Elizabeth. After all, what we have been getting ready for these past weeks isthe coming of the Prince of Peace. It makes no sense tomark these days by a stressful pace and short tempers. The Lord is in our midst, let us be filled with the excitementof John the Baptist who leapt in the womb of hismother. If we make room for Jesus in our preparationsand celebrations, these will truly be days of grace, joyand peace.May God bless you on this final Sunday of Advent andthroughout the Christmas season.Fr. VISITATION, ELMHURST, IL DECEMBER 25, 2006Communion for theHomebound and/or ElderlyDo you know someone who is homeboundand/or elderly and cannot attend Mass but wouldlike to receive communion during this Christmasseason? Please contact Deacon Tony at 630-833-2145 to arrange a visit.Holy Land Times TwoIt is April, 2006. There are fifty of us. We gaze with amazementas our bus passes through the gates of the 24 foot, concretewall that surrounds Bethlehem. The streets are empty and only ahand full of shops and restaurants are open. The town, oncebustling with tourists, crowded shops and packed hotels, is aghost town. The pilgrims are afraid to come. We all feel verysafe, not threatened at all, but sad that one of Christendom’sholiest sites is dying. Today, only 1% of the population in theHoly Land is Christian. Don’t be afraid to make the trip, but ifyou can’t, please pray for the Christians there. We are there to walk along the Shepherds’ Field where theangel of the Lord appeared to the men tending their flocks onthat first Christmas night. We are there to visit the birth place ofJesus, Our Lord and Savior. As we drive into the parking lot ofthe Church of the Nativity our spirits soar, for without anywords, all of us know that in just a few minutes we will be in theGrotto of the Nativity. On the floor of the Grotto is “The Star ofBethlehem.” The inscription on the Star reads: “Hic de VirgineMaria Jesus Christus natus est.” (Here the Virgin Mary gavebirth to Jesus Christ.) We are in the exact spot! Each of us takesour turn as we kneel and kiss that most sacred place. Our sadnessturns to joy. None of us want to leave but we are scheduled tohave a private Mass in a few minutes in the Church of theNativity. For me, the thrill continues, for there in the Church ofthe Nativity, just a short distance from Our Lord’s birth place, Iserve my first Mass as an altar server. When I come to our Adoration Chapel to visit Jesus, I simplyclose my eyes and I am transported back to Bethlehem, but thistime with Jesus. Every Christian should make the effort to go tothe Holy Land; I promise you the trip of a lifetime. Until then, visit Him in the chapel, the other Holy Land!If you would like to become a Registered Adorer, call Owenor Gail at 630-573-0033.Church DoorsTo facilitate entering the church from the east parkinglot, we will be unlocking the steel doors on the north andsouth sides of the church for weekday and Sunday Masses. We hope this will make coming to church a little easier forour parishioners, especially our seniors.New Year’s Resolution for MenWeekendJanuary 19, 20, 21, 2007If you are planning on working on your spiritual life in 2007,you may wish to inquire about making a Cursillo Weekend. This was simply an exceptional week for our program. If you were one of the those who braved the Walk-inServices this past week, you observed confusion first hand. YourMANNA Team survived again to sell certificates another day. Wecan all be very thankful that we only have one December a year.On the happy side, last week $3,500 in tuition credit was earnedby those participating families. You all should be very proud ofyourselves. You are seeing a successful program grow rightbefore your eyes. Keep shopping and use our certificates forthose after the Christmas sales. When the church was built, a decision was made not toinclude a crying room so as not to segregate families with babiesand young children from the rest of the congregation at Mass. When the church was renovated as part of Vision 2000, glassdoors were added to the vestibule along with a better sound systemto allow parents with a crying child to step out into thevestibule until the child was settled, yet still have a chance to seeand hear the Mass. Having young children in the church with theparents allows families to be together during the liturgy and givesthem the opportunity to learn how to behave during Mass. We areblessed to have families with young children in our parish and weare happy that they come to Mass with their little ones. Whilebabies may at times make themselves heard at Mass, they are asign of the future of our Church and the blessing of new life thatis such a tremendous gift from God. Let us always be welcomingand patient with these youngest members of Visitation. We Need UshersWe presently need additional ushers. Those (women and menof high school age and older) who would like to volunteer, please fill out the Usher Ministry Sign-up Form located in theushers’ room in the back of the vestibule near the men’srestroom. You do not have to commit to be at any specific Massbut we will ask you to agree to simply identify yourself to theUsher Captain at the rear of the Church before the Mass youattend begins. You will be assigned a task if your help is needed. If you have any questions, please contact me directly eitherby email at gpkcdc@juno.com, by leaving a message on myhome phone 630-954-1511 (24/7), at my office 630-530-5484(24/7) or by fax to my office at 630-530-7873 (24/7). The CCW sponsors many wonderful eventsthroughout the year and through fundraising has been beable to provide generous gifts to the parish, the school, theR.E. program and many charitable causes. We are gratefulfor all they do for so many people. May God bless thesewonderful women. When I have explained the extreme permissiveness ofAmerican abortion law to people, one of the most commonreactions is: “That can’t be right.” I’ve found that most people, including many law professors, have a great deal of difficultywrapping their minds around the idea that the Courtwould permit the intentional destruction of a healthy infantwho was capable of living outside his or her mother’s body, when the mother’s health (in the ordinary meaning of thatword) is not in serious danger.Harvard Law School Professor, Mary Ann Glendon,“The Women of Roe v. Wade,” First Things, June/July, 2003.Ann Marie Michaelis, the parish representative atLiturgical Publications, Inc., our bulletin publisher, will visitus next month to service our bulletin. We would like to thankour present advertisers for renewing their ads and continuingtheir support of our parish. For those interested in placing a new ad, this is your opportunity. To obtain information about advertising for the newpublication year, please call Ann Marie at 1-800-950-9952,ext. 2484.
