By Joe PhelpsThe Daily Siftings HeraldWed Sep 30, 2009Arkadelphia, Ark.All six of Arkadelphia Fire Department’s fire trucks passed a pump inspection Tuesday. Each truck was tested by a specialized mobile fire pump testing trailer, which brings a watersource to the fire department. In years past, firefighters had to shuffle trucks around andshut off a city street while water was pumped from Nowlin Pond to test the pumps on eachtruck. For the first time, though, retired firefighter Bob Franklin, who visits 200 firedepartments each year, brought the Draft Commander testing system — one of only a fewwhich have been manufactured. Franklin and his son-in-law checked each fire pump forneeded maintenance, including oil, seals and valves, as well as each truck’s transmissionand coolant system. The inspections took one hour for each truck, running a series of testsfor water capacity, water pressure and excess pump power. The inspection, said Fire ChiefRicky Arnold, saves AFD time at no additional cost to the city. Franklin said the trucks“passed with flying colors.”http://www.siftingsherald.com/news/police_and_fire/x1699606507/Pump-it-upPage 15

John BadgerOtero County, Alamogordo, New Mexico“This was the first unit in the state and is thegreatest thing we could have purchased,” Badgersaid. One big benefit of the Draft Commander, hesaid, “is that instead of taking pumpers to a centrallocation where they’re out of service, we take thetester to the department.”James McNeillFire Truck Certification, Hayfork, CA“The fact that the unit is portable is the ticketbecause it’s self contained, has no gimmicks and isa professional topnotch unit,” he said. “The bestthing about it is how simple it is to set up and use,and besides, the truck doesn’t have to be out ofservice because we bring the pump tester to thedepartment.” “It’s been a massive success for us,”he said.Chief Tom Garcia, Shawnee Heights Fire District“ Having our apparatus pump tested annually on-site with the Draft Commander saves us time, moneyand is convenient because the trucks never have to leave the fire district.”Page 19
