The Maxillofacial Unit is immediately adjacent to the Head & Neck ward, shared with ENand Ophthalmic Surgery. Staff Grade SurgeonMaxillofacial Surgery:Ms E Wadhwa, Ms C Askew, Ms A Al-Shawaf, Ms S Girgis1 Specialist Registrar in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery rotates to St George’s and East Grinsteadand 2 Specialist Registrars in Orthodontics linked to Guy’s / Royal London Hospital three yearOrthodontic programme..Five SHOs/DF2 in Maxillofacial Surgery, One SHO/DF2 in Orthodontics and Restorative dentistryand One Full-Time Honorary Clinical Attachmentb) The SHO/DF2 posts are normally for 6 months renewable for upto one year. There are fiveSHOs/DF2 who will be based at the William Harvey Hospital, Ashford. The programme isarranged in ten week blocks, so that each SHO/DF2 rotates every ten weeks. During each block often weeks the SHO/DF2 will be responsible to a named Consultant. However, one of the ten weekblocks will be a ‘float’ block, when the SHO/Df2 will cover for colleagues on holiday or on studyleave.c) The main duties are located at the William Harvey Hospital. SHOs/DF2 will be required to visitthe Kent & Canterbury Hospital, Canterbury and the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital,Margate for day surgery and out patient clinics. The SHO/DF2 is non-resident and should livewithin 20 minutes and be available within 20 minutes of the William Harvey Hospital when oncall. On call rooms are available if necessary and full time accommodation may be availabledepending on demandThe Junior Doctor accepts that he/she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies andunforeseen circumstances at the request of the Consultant, in consultation, where practicable, withhis colleagues, both senior and junior, on the above hospital sites. It has been agreed between theprofessions and the department that, while Junior Doctors accept that they will perform such duties,the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments rising under this sub-section areexceptional and, in particular, that Junior Doctors should not be required to undertake work of thiskind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.d) The on-call rota is 1:5 with prospective cover for colleagues on annual and study leave. Only oneSHO/DF2 should be on leave at any one time, the only exception being the sitting of examinations.You are therefore advised to book leave as far in advance as possible. A minimum of 8 weeks isrequired by the Trust.The Duties CompriseMaxillofacial SurgeryOut-Patients – new and review patients.


Minor oral surgery under local anaesthetic / sedation.On-CallCasualty and trauma work as required.In-PatientsDay to day care of patients admitted for Maxillofacial surgery. Experience of dento-alveolarsurgery and the assistance with salivary glands surgery, cancer surgery, free-flap surgery andorthognathic surgery.OrthodonticsAttendance at New Patient Referral Clinics.Attendance at Joint Clinics for orthognathic surgery patients.Research and audit opportunities are available to interested candidates. The Canterbury Centre forHealth and Clinical Sciences has a close link with the University of Kent at Canterbury.e) Travel expenses can be claimed between the hospitals and use of a car is essential.Study and Traininga) This post is recognised for postgraduate training by the Royal College of Surgeons for the finalFDS/MFDS, and the FRCS/MRCS examination.b) Study leave is available and junior staff are encouraged to take up their entitlement of study leavefor recognised courses. Expenses may not always be available. The Clinical Tutor will onlyapprove study leave for doctors who have completed their mandatory training. You should beadvised of these requirements at your hospital induction at the commencement of the post and isalso available via the Head and Neck Directorate Office where a record of this training is held.c) There is an excellent Library at the William Harvey Hospital and also in the Canterbury Centre forHealth and Clinical Sciences.d) There are regular Consultant tutorials, generally on a weekly basis, in the department.e) There is a wide range of lectures, courses and seminars in the Postgraduate Medical Centre. TheDental Tutor (Prof Kenneth Eaton) organises a comprehensive range of courses for General DentalPractitioners.


f) The SHO/DF2 is expected to take an active part in the monthly Department Audit meetings. Thereare also regional audit meetings within Kent, Surrey, Sussex in November, March and June. At theJune meeting juniors are encouraged to submit a presentation for the Chichester Cup.g) The SHO/DF2 would be expected to sign an educational agreement with the Trust, offeringtraining opportunities and supervised experience according to their needs.h) The Postgraduate Dean for the Kent, Surrey, Sussex <strong>Deanery</strong> and the Regional Adviser for theFaculty of Dental Surgery, RCS England is Mr Steven Lambert-Humble.i) The SHO/DF2 will have an appraisal within 2 weeks of commencement of the post and then at 2months and 8 months, to discuss job progress and career plans.Main Conditions of Servicea) The post is subject to the Medical and Dental Staff ‘Terms and Conditions of Service’. Theminimum period of notice is one month. The appointment is subject to the <strong>NHS</strong> SuperannuationRegulations, copies of which are available at the General Office at the Kent and CanterburyHospital.b) The post is full-time for six months initially. One period of ten weeks is spent mainly at the Kent& Canterbury Hospital.c) The employing authority may, with the written consent of the appointee, make deductions for boardand other similar charges.d) Peripheral allowances are not payable.Other Facilitiesa) There is a Hospital Sports and Social Club.b) The Doctor’s Mess has a television lounge.c) Outside facilities include Squash, Tennis, Swimming, Golf and Sailing.d) Staff car parking space is available.Conditions of Appointmenta) Qualification required: BDS or LDS, RCS or equivalent.


) Experience of a previous resident post is desirable, but not essential. Previous vocational trainingexperience will be taken into account.c) Full registration with the General Dental Council/General Medical Council.d) A medical examination may be required prior to taking up appointment.All medical staff are reminded of the necessity to comply with the Access to Health Records Act 1990.
