kidsʼ kickboards to the beach
instead of having the kids ride
was probably not a very safe
Loads of young people who
“FROM THE ARCHIVES”
Part of the Archiveʼs mission
has been to record oral histories,
some of which have been
transcribed from the original
tapes. The following has been
taken from one of these tapes
and tells what living in GLP was
like in the 40ʼs from a kidʼs
point of view. Being interviewed
(on tape) are Fred Clark and
Russell Barber whose parents
served GLP so well over many
years. Collected by Geneva
de Labry
Fred: My father and mother
lived over in the Noank area.
My grandfather lived where, as
you go North on 215 where
they have built some beautiful
homes recently, there used to
be a big farm up there, and
thatʼs where he started. And
then he had a wagon and a
donkey, and he used to come
down to the Point - - especially
in the spring - - when people
would come from Hartford and
every other place around here,
and heʼd get their suitcases at
the train. It used to stop over
there by Haley Farm, I understand.
The trolley, I mean not
the train. Heʼd put all their gear
onto the wagon and deliver
them to the few homes that
were here at the Point. Then,
Bill Wheeler who lived at the
gate- - before my time, there
was a waiting room there - -
Russell: (Bill Wheeler was my
grandfather.) The trolley came
through Spicerʼs boatyard in
Noank and down from Mystic
like the railroad does now, and
came past where the Seahorse
is now. The bridge there was
all made out of spiles, and it
stopped at the grandfatherʼs
and people got off or on. And
my grandfather delivered the
ice, because everybody had an
icebox, generally out on the
front porch where you could
drill a hole through the floor and
the melted ice (water) could
drip down through. Go ahead.
Fred: So then my parents
moved down to Church Street.
The family house was straight
down by the next street which
goes along the water. They
lived there for a long, long time.
And then they decided,
because he liked Groton Long
Point, that he should build
something down here. Well, the
house on 8 Beach Road was
built by two friends of his, the
Patterson boys from Noank and
they were great carpenters. He
built that house and at that time
there was a building on there.
The foundation is still there,
part of the house. That was the
Katys Kitchen
My garden is exploding with
zucchini! If you miss one day of
picking you are faced with
some very large baseball bat
looking zucchini…what to do
with all this zucchini! I have
found some very creative uses
for these zucchini because I
hate to throw them out. Take a
large zucchini and rest it lying
down, find the best position for
it. Take a small sharp knife and
hollow out small holes into the
zucchini. I tend to make 3-5
small holes depending on the
length. Make the holes deep
enough but do not break
through the bottom. Fill the
holes with water; zucchini are
very moist so the water will
hold. Gather a few short
stemmed flowers and arrange
in the zucchini holes. Look out
Martha Stewart you have created
an amazing eye catching
flower arrangement.
With the smaller zucchini I suggest
Zucchini Carpaccio. This is
a cold dish that requires very
few ingredients, but it tastes
best when you use the best
olive oil you have and the
freshest ingredients.
• 4 small zucchini (1 lb. total)
• 1/3 cup loosely packed
fresh thyme leaves
• 2 tablespoons extra-virgin
olive oil
• 2 teaspoons fresh lemon
juice
• 1/4 cup pine nuts (1 oz.) –
closely can burn easily
• 1 (6-oz) piece Parmigiano-
Reggiano, shaved
• Zucchini/squash blossoms
as garnish
Cut zucchini into very thin
slices, use a mandolin if you
have one. Arrange slices overlapping
on a platter. Sprinkle
the fresh thyme leaves over the
zucchini. Whisk together olive
oil and lemon juice in a small
bowl, and then drizzle over the
zucchini. Sprinkle with sea salt,
pepper and pine nuts. Let stand
for 30 minutes or more to allow
the flavors to meld. Just before
serving use a vegetable peeler
and shave the cheese all over
the platter of zucchini. Garish
with blossoms or a large twig of
fresh thyme. Serves 4-6 as a
first course or side dish.
GRAPE NOTES
John Lombardo
Letʼs come up with a wine that
would be an appropriate accompaniment
for Katyʼs delicious zucchini
carpaccio.
We are dealing with a vegetable
with unassertive flavors
that is not cooked, and is prepared
in a rather light-handed
manner. For me that preparation
calls for a white wine. A red
would be simply too overwhelming
for the lightness of the food.
A rosé might work, but it has that
berryish taste that just doesnʼt
seem right for a dish dressed with
oil and lemon juice.
Among the more common white
wines Chardonnay will be too
heavy for the delicateness of this
dish. Chardonnays are typically
full-bodied and are commonly fermented
or aged in oak barrels.
This gives them a richness that
will overmatch the zucchini.
Rieslings often have a touch of
sweetness that will not pair particularly
well with the savoriness
of this dish. Gewurztraminer
combines the two off-putting
characteristics of Chardonnay
and Riesling, a bit of sweetness
in a full flavored, full-bodied wine.
So, that doesnʼt work. And then
there is Sauvignon Blanc.
Sauvignon Blancs are middle
weights with enough body to pair
with food but not so big-boned as
to overwhelm a more delicate
preparation. These wines often
have a grassy component which
will mirror the zucchini. And a
note of citrus occurs in many
Sauvignon Blancs, sometimes as
grapefruit and sometimes as

GLP NEWS Page 4
lemon. This feature will pick up
the lemon in the dish. Lastly,
Sauvignon Blancs are noted for
their crisp acidity. That acid component
will be a perfect foil for
the oil that dresses the zucchini
carpaccio.
We have found the varietal
which will be most complementary
to the food. But a Sauvignon
Blanc from where? A stroll down
the aisles of your wine store will
reveal Sauvignon Blancs from
California, France, Argentina,
New Zealand, Italy, and other
countries. The good news is that
I donʼt think it matters. The variation
in Sauvignon Blancs from different
countries is more a matter
of the balance among the varietal
characteristics of grass and citrus.
The Kiwi Sauvs present
grapefruit flavors; the French are
elegant; and the California versions
often show grassy traits. I
donʼt think you can go wrong with
any of these.
At the end of the day, the perfect
pairing is a wine that makes the
food taste better than it might on
its own. And conversely, the food
should make the wine taste better
than it might on its own. I think
the Zucchini Carpaccio –
Sauvignon Blanc combination will
fulfill that goal rather nicely. Give
it a try one of these warm summer
evenings.
Gardening On The Edge
with Heather Laidlaw
The Weed Thief
Iʼve always known my mother
as a gardener, and not one
always been outside turning
compost and wrestling brambles
with her bare hands. My
grandmother, however, was not
so inclined. A heathen hausfrau
descended from a line of
cards, candy, liquor, her children
and her dogs. She wore
costume jewelry and unsubtle
perfume. She held ungrandmotherly
biases towards her
grandchildren.
There were no gardens at
Knapsack (the name of our
home) in her day, just a yard of
prickly grass, rocks and bayberry,
perfect for games of running
bases and flashlight tag.
Usually there were a few tomatoes
planted by my aunt.
Eventually, there were a couple
dementia, or some deep inner
passion unleashed by a wild
flower?
Iʼd prefer to believe the latter—Asclepiamania.
While I
prefer to see them in their
native meadow habitat, with the
bees, beetles, and butterflies
dancing about them, than in a
domestic garden, I have atoned
for my familyʼs shame by planting
a few legitimately acquired
specimens, bright and brazen
as my Grandmother herself.
Lobster Facts
The word lobster comes from the old French word loppe meaning
spider. They have 5 pairs of legs. The front pair grows into claws.
The back four are used for travel and to grasp food. Lobster fossils
have been found in 511-million-year-old limestone deposits in
England. Ancient Romans depicted them on their mosaic floors.
The 4thʼs Road Race
We began the day with 48
runners five years and under
running cone to cone. All runners
finished and received a
the lagoon for runners between
the ages of six to eight. This
race was another success with
38 runners crossing the finish
the ages of nine to eleven completed
the ½ mile run around
the lagoon. All runners received
a red, white, and blue
participant ribbon, while the top
Yay! The tournaments started
with the Womenʼs Draw and
it did draw a nice big crowd. A
lot of new names among the 32
players. After the morningʼs
play, Nancy Budd and Joanne
Travers and sisters, Leslie
Mahoney and Melissa Kane,
emeged as the finalists
A word to those who play in
the Draw. In the Womenʼs
Doubles there is a certain
amount of seriousness. The
purpose of the Draw is to
include players who are still
learning the game and who
might not have much experience
in tournament play. They
get a chance to mix with better
players and the better players
are SUPPOSED to be welcoming,
patient and kind and not
make the new players feel that
they are not good enough to
play in the Draw. If you donʼt
feel you have the patience to
play with the new players, do
Back to normal?
tice some sportswomanship.
That being said there was
some very good tennis in the
Draw finals. Nancy is so experienced
and such a smart player
and her partner Joanne stayed
very consistent. Melissa and
Leslie are very complimentary
to each otherʼs play and communicated
often on their strategy.
In the first game Melissa
lost her serve and Nancy
showed some real power shots
while Joanne hit some good
angles. On Nancyʼs serve there
were some great volleys; Leslie
hit some good alley shots; lots
of lobs and deuces and a break
back. They really played very
evenly right to the end of the
first set which Nancy & Joanne
won 7-5. The secod set went
more quickly with Nancy &
Joanne easily taking the set at
6-1 and winning the match.
Complain though they might the “Ladies of the Draw” still took off
their hats and sunglasses to have their picture taken. Sooo worth it!
And then on to the next
tournament! The Mixed
Doubles finals were sooooo
much fun to watch. A good
sized gallery, cool under the
Family Night tent and enjoying
the breezes off the water, were
treated to one of the best
matches ever played here.
Both hard-fought semi- final
wins sent Nancy Budd and her
“other son”, Alex Reed to the
finals against the brother/sister
combo of Adam Hill and Megan
Bibby. This made it hard for the
gallery to cheer because all
four players are not only so
good at their tennis games but
the four of them are also so
well-liked that nobody wanted
either team to lose. So it was
great being able to cheer for
great shots on the part of all
four.
Adamʼs shots were so hard
and fast you couldnʼt see some
of them but Nancy stood her
ground and returned the shots
without a flinch. Alex spun and
sliced his shots with beautiful
form and his powerful overheads
smashed over with high
bounces just about impossible
to return. Meg, who is six
months pregnant with Baby Boy
Bibby (she refuses to reveal his
name), played her normal
smart game, steadily complimented
her brotherʼs game,
handled all the lobs thrown at
her and flew her own lobs back.
She wisely played back when
Alex was receiving serves as
Alex has a wicked return shot.
Meg and Adam won both sets
at 6-4, 6-4, and it was a pleasure
to see such good tennis
and be able to be happy for all
four players in the match.
Meg, Adam, me, Nancy, & Alex. I got so excited at the award presentation
I let them wear their visors & I forgot to take off my sunglasses!
Class A
Reports by Jay Washburn
Several of the A-boats, including
the Cormorant, Petrel, and Duck,
distinguished themselves during
this weekendʼs two Point Races
and Commodoresʼ Cup. After
Woody Bergendahl continued his
brilliant sailing by winning the first
Point Race on Saturday, Burkard/-
Grondinʼs Cormorant, skippered by
Matt Ray, won the dayʼs second
Point Race despite being penalized
for hitting a mark. On Sunday, the
Duck, sailed by Case Watson, captured
the Commodoresʼ Cup, which
also featured separate C-420, Opti,
and Laser boat races.
In the weekendʼs first race in a
delightful 10-12 knot Southwest
breeze, eight boats crossed the
starting line: Bergendahlʼs
Sandpiper; the Petrel, sailed by
Joe Devine; the Duck, skippered
by Watson; Ginger, with Kip Wiley
and the “Kiplings” on board;
Pelican, sailed by Jay and Suzy
Fisher; Nuffy and Liz Murphyʼs
Swallow; and Bo and Matt Rathʼs
Skimmer. After completing the
course of Seaflower, Intrepid, a leeward
mark, and home, the boats
crossed the finish line in the aboveorder.
The fleet took advantage of
the favorable conditions and sailed
a second race, a shorter course of
N “26” (Horseshoe), N “22”, a lee-

Cinderellaʼs Cleaning Contractors, Inc.
ward mark and home. While rounding
N “22” as the lead boat, the
Cormorant grazed the mark; as a
result, it had to a perform 360degree
penalty turn before crossing
the finish line. Despite this handicap,
the Cormorant was able to
hold off the Sandpiper to win its first
race of the season. The Petrel,
Duck, Pelican, Skimmer, and
Swallow finished in that order.
The conditions during Sundayʼs
Commodoreʼs Race were not as
favorable. A lighter and shiftier
breeze challenged the fleet during a
course of Seaflower, starting pin, N
“26”, and home. The Duck and the
Petrel completed the first windward
leg to Seaflower followed by a
downwind spinnaker run to the
starting pin off Main Beach in first
and second place, respectively. On
the way to N “26” on another windward
leg, the Duck separated itself
from the fleet, taking control of the
race on its way to the boatʼs first
victory of the season. The Petrel
finished second, followed by the
Kite, Sandpiper (with veteran sailor
Bruce Lockwood on board), and
Pelican (with former co-owner of
the Pintail, Doug Hope, on board).
Swallow and Pintail succumbed to
light air and didnʼt finish.
