Gift of Life Family House Fall 2009
Building Gift of Life Family House
What started out as a dream centered on
helping families through the transplant
process is now becoming a reality. On
Sunday, October 18, amid the 35th
Anniversary Celebration for Gift of Life
Donor Program, the groundbreaking
for Gift of Life Family House capped
off the event. The day truly was a
celebration, providing 600 guests with
the opportunity to relive many of the
milestones and memories from the past,
while witnessing the official beginning
of our newest initiative.
Howard Nathan, President/CEO, Gift of
Life Donor Program, acknowledged that
this project has long been a dream of his.
“The Family House will provide a place
where families can come together, be
away from the hospital a little while and
be with others who understand the stress
and what they are going through.”

Family House, understands the important
role that the Family House will play.
“When told that your loved one needs a
transplant to survive, and you have to
travel miles from home, suddenly daily
decisions become overwhelming. The
Family House will offer families a place
to stay, free of logistical or financial
worries, so that they can concentrate all
their energies on their loved one.”
Gift of Life Family House will be the first
program of its kind, developed as a
program within an organ procurement
organization (OPO) providing service to
family members and patients of the
area’s eight transplant centers. The 30room
facility will provide temporary
lodging and supportive services to
family members of adult and pediatric
transplant patients traveling greater

Capital Campaign entitled
“Open the Door to Life.”
As Dean of the School of Medicine at
Temple University Medical School, Dr.
Daly understands the financial challenges
faced by healthcare systems today.
Instrumental in securing fundraising for
Temple’s new School of Medicine, he
also provides outstanding leadership to
the Family House capital campaign
development process. But Dr. Daly’s
personal status as a liver recipient provides
possibly the strongest credential to the
appropriateness of his selection – he
understands the critical need for the
Family House and the impact that it
will have.
“I am honored to be a member of the
Gift of Life Family House Board and
eager to help in any way to bring the
Family House and its critical mission to
our region,” said Dr. Daly. “By its very
nature, the Family House will create a
new awareness for the critical need for
organ donors while providing outstanding
service to the families and transplant
patients we serve.”

Interested in volunteering
at the Family House?
Gift of Life Family House will provide guest families
with a comfortable respite from the stresses of
caring for their loved one and volunteers are a very
important part of providing that care. Whether
it’s cooking a meal, answering the phone, sharing
a laugh or shedding a tear, volunteers are truly the
Heart of the House.
Here are some ways that you can get involved...
Guest Services Volunteers
Guest Services Volunteers work closely with staff and guest families by
helping to answer the phones, greet families and visitors at the door, register
new families, prepare guests’ rooms, and lend a hand with special mailings
and administrative needs.
Meal Groups
Groups of up to 12-15 people are able to provide, prepare (on or off site),
serve and clean up a meal for 50-60 people. This is a very rewarding
opportunity and the impact of your service on our families will be seen and
felt first-hand.
Bakers
To fill the Family House with delicious smells like at home, individuals or
small groups, bake cookies, brownies and other treats in our kitchen. This fun
activity is a great way for Girl Scout troops, or school clubs, for example,
to directly experience the remarkable power of volunteerism.
Speaker’s Bureau
Family House Speaker’s Bureau volunteers are available to come to your group
or organization to provide information about the Family House.
Wish List Drive Volunteers
Keeping our House stocked with basic home necessities requires a lot of
donated food and supplies. Every few months, we update our wish list of needed
items – food, household goods, sample size toiletries and office supplies.
Arts & Crafts/Game Events/
Family Activity Volunteers
Individuals or small groups may organize, furnish supplies and lead a craft
activity for family members staying at the House. Volunteers can also host a
game event or activity such as bingo or board games.

A letter from a grateful family...
Dear Family House:
November 23, 2009
Thanksgiving is a wonderful day and truly an American holiday
No matter how bad things are, if you look around, there is
always a reason to be thankful. In November of 2004, I was
staying at the Transplant House in Rochester, MN waiting
to see if I would ever get a transplant. I was in the hospital
more than I was out of it but for that Thanksgiving, my son,
Greg, and his wife, Elizabeth, who was six months pregnant
with their first child, came to visit. They had dinner with
us at the Transplant House and talked about what the next
Thanksgiving would be like with a new baby. It was one of my
best Thanksgivings and I can still see them in my mind's eye,
standing in front of the Transplant House saying goodbye
when they were leaving.
The Transplant House was truly a home away from home, a
welcoming place to stay. And I don't know if we - it was a
''we'' journey with my wife, Pat, and me - could have made it if
we hadn't had the support of those at the Transplant House.
I know what it will mean for those who will be staying at our
Gift of Life Family House and to help toward the opening of
our Family House, enclosed is my gift of $250.

On September 4, a memorial benefit was held at Paxon Hollow Country Club in memory of
Nick Civitella on the 10th anniversary of his death. Nick’s sister, Kim Civitella Devlin, shown with
her son and mother, Sue Civitella, welcomed hundreds of Nick’s family and friends to a tenth high
school reunion to celebrate Nick’s life and the lives of those he saved through organ donation.
