Sirindhorn International Institute of TechnologyUndergraduate Catalog 2008Chemical Engineering (ChE)Curriculum OutlineChemical engineering is a branch of engineering thatdeals with the chemical and physical processes used todevelop and make products such as pharmaceuticals, artificial organs, semiconductors, oil refineries, solarpanels, clean water, and biocompatible polymers.Chemical engineers have made major contributions tomodern society. With the additional knowledge ofbiology, chemical engineers are devising new ways forliving organisms to perform molecular transformations, and discovering new schemes for delivery of medicinesto specific sites in the body. The chemical engineering program intends to preparechemical engineers for life-long achievement througheducation in the principles of chemical engineering, andto encourage development of communication, teamwork and leadership skills.A basic foundation in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and engineering is established in the first two years ofthe curriculum. A core of required Chemistry andChemical Engineering courses is followed by a selectionof electives. One group of electives will preparestudents to be biochemical engineers, and anothergroup to be chemical process and material engineers. In addition, ChE students can also choose three optionaltracks (Senior Project Track, Foreign Exchange Track andExtended Training Track).- Senior Project Track is for students who would liketo conduct their projects under the supervision ofChE faculty members.- Foreign Exchange Track is designed for studentswho wish to participate in an exchange programwith foreign partner universities.- Extended Training Track is designed for studentswho would like to participate in a longer trainingperiod (for the whole semester) under a cooperativetraining program with companies ororganizations.Structure and Components1.
