East RenfrewshireA shared assessment tool, agreed with health partners, is being implemented with the aim ofspeeding up people’s access to services. Its use is being monitored <strong>and</strong> is being reviewed insummer 2002.A small sensory impairment team is based in a Disability Information Centre, <strong>and</strong> works incollaboration with local <strong>and</strong> national voluntary organisations. There are few formal links withhealth services, although more are planned. Links with education focus on future needsassessments <strong>and</strong> the work of the children with disabilities team. Referrals for an assessmentfor people with a hearing impairment can take up to four months to attract a response. Thereare no specific services for the deaf-blind.A structure has been developed to take forward the Joint Future agenda. This includes a highlevel policy group including elected members <strong>and</strong> NHS Board representatives; a joint steeringgroup; locality planning groups for both Health Board areas, <strong>and</strong> client group focused strategy<strong>and</strong> implementation groups.3. Numbers of adoptionapplications are relatively high.The rate of looked after children is lower than in most other authorities, <strong>and</strong> numbers continueto fall.Education <strong>and</strong> social work collaborated to implement the recommendations of Learning withCare: joint assessment arrangements for children in residential care are well established; allchildren in residential care receive full-time education <strong>and</strong> education reports are available tosocial work staff for all those children.89
