There are comparatively low rates ofolder people in residential care homes and of older people receiving home care, although thenumber of the latter increased slightly between 1999 and 2000.The Council is reconfiguring its services for older people. Day care has expanded to seven daysa week, and includes evening opening hours. Use of both the day centre and the communityalarm scheme is now non-assessable. Bonnyton House, a residential unit, has been substantiallyrefurbished to provide dementia care. The home support service now includes a “Mr Fixit” service,a laundry service, and a shopping service in partnership with a supermarket.Support to people with more complex needs has been improved by the introduction of a RapidResponse team, an intensive personal care and bathing service (jointly with Argyll & ClydeHealth Board), and a short-term care and rehabilitation team (jointly with Greater GlasgowHealth Board). However, the number of people receiving a community care service for physical disabilitiesmore than halved between 1999 and 2001.East Renfrewshire has a Partnership in Practice Agreement which is directed to improvingaccommodation and social support for people with learning disabilities. Current priorities arerefurbishment of Atholl House as a learning disability facility and the move of former residentsto their own homes. In addition, properties are being purchased for re-provisioning, and 9houses have been purchased to be turned into 20 houses through Home Link.Provision of mental health services varies across East Renfrewshire, according to the priorityafforded by the two Health Boards concerned – Argyll and Clyde and Greater Glasgow. TheCouncil aims to achieve comparability of mental health services across the localities, inconjunction with voluntary organisations and its health partners.88
