Theaverage length of orders completed in 2000-2001 was shorter than in most other authorities butthe orders took longer to complete. An average of just 2.7 hours were completed per week.As a st<strong>and</strong>-alone authority for criminal justice services Dumfries <strong>and</strong> Galloway, one of the threePathfinder projects sponsored by the Getting Best Results initiative, committed to introducingservice-wide quality assurance practices <strong>and</strong> procedures <strong>and</strong> subject to external evaluation.Staff input their own data to the SWIS information system, which is used for case-work <strong>and</strong> forstaff supervision. The system is also used for workload management including managing highriskcases, <strong>and</strong> for aggregate information which is fed back to staff.There is a “getting best results” quality assurance group <strong>and</strong> staff have received quality assurancetraining which will be integrated into practice. All staff – both operational <strong>and</strong> support – havebeen involved in the <strong>development</strong> of the Pathfinder pathway, beginning with a review of effectivepractice research <strong>and</strong> of organisational culture. The Intranet allows staff access to procedures,st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> legislation.51
