Profile at 2002With 307,400 people, South Lanarkshire is a partly urban, partly rural area, with the fifth largestpopulation of Scottish authorities.The overall population is expected to fall by 1.8% by 2016. Numbers of children <strong>and</strong> youngpeople are currently above the national average but all age groups under 45 are set todecrease. The over 75 population is expected to increase at a greater than average rate.Unemployment is reducing <strong>and</strong> at 3.8% (January 2002) is close to the national average.The drug misuse rate is just below average (1.9% of 15-54 year olds).The level of crime has fallen <strong>and</strong> is below the national average (631 crimes recorded per 10,000population in 2001).South Lanarkshire Council is organised into 7 Resource Groups from a previous 15 operatingdepartments. The structure is intended to reflect the way the public wants services delivered.An Executive Director manages Social Work Resources with support from five Heads of Servicefor Older People’s Services, Adult Services, Child & Family Services, Strategic Services, SupportServices, <strong>and</strong> a Justice Services Manager.
