INVERCLYDE1. Profile at 2002Inverclyde has a population of 84,600 in mainly urban communities. Poverty <strong>and</strong> deprivationfigure prominently in urban parts of the area. An analysis of the 1991 census showed that 14.3%of households in the area could be categorised as severely or multiply deprived.The total population is expected to fall over the next 14 years by 12.3%, wholly among thoseunder 45. The number of older people will rise only slightly.At 3.2% (January 2002), unemployment is lower than the national average <strong>and</strong> has fallen at ahigher than average rate over the past year.Inverclyde has Scotl<strong>and</strong>’s fourth highest drug misuse rate (2.8% of 15-54 year olds).Inverclyde has the sixth highest crime rate in Scotl<strong>and</strong>.
