AberdeenBehavioural support teachers underpin a strategy to reduce exclusions. A Barnardo’s residential<strong>and</strong> outreach project includes specialist teachers who work with troubled young people tore-engage them within the mainstream education system. Joint social work/education projectsare run from Craigielea Children’s Centre:• Acorn, for young people aged 14 <strong>and</strong> over, who fail to attend school, <strong>and</strong> in particular thoselooked after away from home; <strong>and</strong>• Unicorn, aimed at helping the most needy young people make the transition from primary tosecondary school.A detailed action plan has been prepared to implement the recommendations of Learning withCare. In summer 2002 local guidance is being issued on multi-disciplinary assessments <strong>and</strong>arrangements are in train to monitor care plans. All schools have a nominated teacher forlooked after children.An audit of the educational environments in residential units is complete, <strong>and</strong> therecommendations flowing from the audit are being implemented, with imaginative spending plans.A multi-disciplinary Moving On committee is at the centre of planning provision <strong>and</strong> purchase ofa range of support <strong>and</strong> accommodation for care leavers. An external review has recommendedfurther commissioning <strong>and</strong> purchasing focused on needs identified by young people themselves,particularly mental health needs.4.
