Here I will onlygive a few indications as to my personal relationswith some <strong>of</strong> them.Of all those I have mentioned I became, I think,most intimate with Huxley. At an early date aftermy return home he asked me to his house inMarlborough Place, where I soon became veryfriendly with his children, then all quite young,all very animated, <strong>and</strong> not at all shy. Mrs. Huxleywas also exceedingly kind <strong>and</strong> pleasant, <strong>and</strong> thewhole domestic tone <strong>of</strong> the house was such as tomake me quite at my ease, which happens to mewith only a few persons. I used <strong>of</strong>ten to go there onSunday afternoons, or to spend the evening, while Iwas several times asked to dine to meet persons <strong>of</strong>similar pursuits to my own.I <strong>of</strong>ten called in at Jermyn Street if I had anyquestion to ask Huxley, <strong>and</strong> he was always ready togive me all the information in his power ; while I ampretty sure I owe partly, if not largely, to his influencethe grant <strong>of</strong> the royal medal <strong>of</strong> the Royal Society,<strong>and</strong> perhaps also <strong>of</strong> the Darwin medal. Once onlythere was a partial disturbance <strong>of</strong> our friendly relations,<strong>of</strong> the exact cause <strong>of</strong> which I have no <strong>record</strong> orrecollection. I had published some paper in which,I believe, I had stated some view which he hadoriginated without mentioning his name, <strong>and</strong> in sucha way as to leave the impression that I put it forthas original. This I had no notion <strong>of</strong> doing ; but Ithink it was an idea which had become so familiar tome that I had quite f<strong>org</strong>otten who originated it. I
