So we had to wait <strong>and</strong> workcontentedly at minor problems. And now, afterforty years, though Spencer <strong>and</strong> Darwin <strong>and</strong> Weismannhave thrown floods <strong>of</strong> light on the phenomena<strong>of</strong> <strong>life</strong>, its essential nature <strong>and</strong> its origin remain asgreat a mystery as ever.
