PREFACE TO THE NEWEDITIONAmong the numerous kind and even flattering noticesof the first edition of this work, there were a considerablenumber inwhich objection was made to itsgreat bulk, caused in part by the inclusion in it ofsubjects only indirectly related to myself, as well asof some of my early writings which were of no specialinterest.Recognizing as I do the justice of this criticism, Igladly agreed to the suggestion of my publishers thatI should prepare a new edition in one volume, byomitting all such superfluous matter as is abovereferred to.Feeling that I was not myself the best judge ofwhat to omit, I asked my son, Mr. William G. Wallace,to undertake this task, after agreeing with him, andwith my publishers, on several entire chapters whichmust certainly be omitted. In order to represent thegeneral reader he asked a friend of his own, who hadnot read the book before, to assist him in forming anopinion in doubtful cases. I have also myself condensedsome diffuse portions, and have added a fewadditional facts, bringing the story of "My Life"down to the present time.a 2
