communication strategyCommunication Activities in2005-06During the past year, we expanded our focuson liaison with end-users of our research. Inaddition to conducting the second ResearchUsers’ Forum for government agencies inCanberra, we held a local stakeholders’ workshopon sea-level rise and extreme events in Hobart. This workshop provided interested parties fromstate and local government with informationon climate change, sea-level rise and sea-levelextremes relevant to the Australian coastline, and gathered information from stakeholdersabout the way they would like to get statisticalinformation about sea-level extremes. Theworkshop was supported by the TasmanianDepartment of Primary Industries and Water. We also involved research users in our annualACE CRC Symposium. The first day of thesymposium centred on the question ‘Climatechange: What will happen to the ocean andwhat will be the impacts?’ ACE CRC researchersshared their latest research findings, andrepresentatives from the Australian GreenhouseOffice, the Bureau of Meteorology, DPIW, ACILTasman and the Insurance Australia Group (IAG)informed us about their particular researchneeds.More emphasis was put on public outreachefforts in 2005-06. ACE CRC researchers gavemore than 50 talks to general or non-scientistaudiences. Audiences included the generalpublic, politicians, teachers, and primary andsecondary school students. These talks aredetailed in Appendix B.Among the public outreach programs, wecollaborated with the CSIRO Discovery Centrein Canberra in a thematic program on ‘TheSouthern Ocean: Linking Antarctica andAustralia’. ACE CRC scientist Will Howard gavea public lecture on global climate change thatwas attended by more than 75 people. Thefollowing day, we conducted a related handsonprofessional development workshop for anadditional 21 teachers.Five ACE CRC people gave presentations duringthe Antarctic Midwinter Festival in Hobart in mid-June. Tony Worby and Guy Williams spoke aboutsea ice during a public luncheon at Hadley’sHotel, Vin Morgan and Shavawn Donoghuetalked about their perspectives of Antarcticaat the ‘Ice Cold Words’ literary event and JuliaJabour participated in a panel discussion, also at‘Ice Cold Words’.The website continued to attract an increasingnumber of visitors. The website use statisticsshowed an average of 1,633 unique visitors permonth during 2005-06, compared to an averageof 806 per month in 2004-05. The website hasbeen improved by the addition of more detailedinformation about the ACE CRC research,as well as links to national and internationalcollaborative projects.Media coverage was maintained and included theparticipation of a John Hunter from the Sea-levelRise Program in a television special on globalclimate change co-produced by the BBC and theDiscovery Channel in the United States. A list ofmedia contacts is included in Appendix C.ACE CRC publications included 63 articles inrefereed journals, 3 books, 10 book chapters,4 conference articles, 29 published conferenceabstracts, 2 technical reports and 14 otherpapers.
