choosing the
right Stove
A stove is a long-term investment, and when you make the decision to buy a
stove it is important that you get a stove that is made with the best materials,
has impeccable construction, and is ideal for your needs.
6
Morsø is one of the leading stove companies in the world,
and since 85 has been manufacturing superior quality
stoves that can be used with wood or coal. All Morsø
stoves are EPA-certified guaranteeing that they comply
with all the strict safety and environmental standards
imposed by the United States Environmental Protection
Agency.
tHE OPtIMAL StOVE
When choosing a stove it is important to look beyond
design to make an informed decision.
There are two types of stoves, convection and radiant, and
Morsø makes both kinds. A convection stove allows air
to circulate within the room and is thus able to distribute
warm air quickly, even into the pesky corners. With a radiant
stove heat is concentrated around the stove and hence it
takes time for the heat to be distributed around the room.
It is vital to assess your needs carefully when choosing a
stove. If your stove is too big for your heating needs you
may have to reduce air supply to the stove to prevent your
living space from becoming too hot. Reduced air supply
could cause less efficient combustion, more soot in the
stove and chimney, resulting in poor utilization of the
stove and the fuel.
SOME QuEStIOnS tO AnSWEr
BEFOrE cHOOSInG A StOVE:
• How many square feet do you need to heat? This information
makes it easy for you to identity the stoves that
are well-suited for your heating requirements. Please
find a list of approximate square feet each Morsø stove
can heat, along with information about the stoves on
page .
• Will the stove be used in a vacation home, cabin or in
your primary residence? Smaller Morsø stoves are often
suitable for small vacation homes and cabins, while
individual needs determine the optimal stove heating
capacity for your primary residence.
• Will the stove be used as a primary heating source or
as an additional heating source to heat up a small part
of the home? How well is your home insulated? This
information helps you determine the following features
of the ideal stove based on your heating requirement
and the insulation of your home: heating capacity,
model, and convection or radiant.
cHOIcE OF MAtErIAL
Morsø uses cast iron for the entire firebox and not just a
few critical spots for protection of other materials. Cast
iron is one of the best-suited materials for stoves due to the
following reasons:
• Cast iron does not distort during use. This means that
regardless of how many times you fire it up the integrity
of your stove is maintained, and the cast iron door
of your stove closes tightly every time.
• There is no danger of cast iron being burnt through.
• Cast iron is especially suitable for stoves, because it
retains heat longer, and emanates even and pleasant
warmth.
Stoves made out of steel are quick to warm up, but do not
retain heat like cast iron.
In Scandinavia, soapstone has been used for centuries to
construct stoves, as soapstone is naturally capable of

PILOt AIr
When using coal the air supply needs
to come from below through the grate.
retaining heat, and emitting it, even after the fire in the stove has
died out. Morsø uses beautiful and efficient Scandinavian soapstone
to enhance the decorative aspects of some of its stoves.
InStALLAtIOn rEGuLAtIOnS
All stoves must be installed in accordance with local building
regulations and codes. Your technical consultant, builder and/or
you are responsible for ensuring all regulations are complied with.
It is therefore a good idea to meet with local building or fire
department officials regarding restrictions and installation
inspection requirements in your area.
WHY cHOOSE A MOrSØ StOVE?
PrE-HEAtEd PrIMArY
And SEcOndArY AIr
Every Morsø stove is a testament to more than 50 years of
stove-making experience, and Morsø as a company has always
been in the forefront of new stove development. There is a Morsø
to suit every desire, and we promise that you can find, from our
extensive range of stoves, the one that suits your needs on design,
heating capacity and type.
cOnVEctIOn PrIncIPLE
Convection stoves give a more uniform and pleasant
heat that also flows to adjoining rooms. Convection
stoves from Morsø have an extra side panel attached
to the outside of the firebox, which creates an air
channel between the two surfaces. Convection stoves
function by transferring heat from the firebox to the
air within these channels. As the hot air rises, cold
air is pulled into the chamber at a low level, which
results in a rapid circulation of air within the room.
SEcOndArY
AIr
When using firewood as fuel, the air supply to the fuel needs to enter the firebox above the fuel
bed in the form of both primary and secondary air supply. The primary air will burn the gases
close to the fuel supply and the secondary air will burn the gases that rise off the fuel bed and are
not consumed in primary combustion. This provides the most efficient combustion.
Morsø stoves stand apart and ahead of most other stoves.
A few of the reasons for this are:
• Morsø offers an unsurpassed 0-year warranty on all
cast iron parts according to Morsø limited warranty.
• All Morsø stoves, convection and radiant, are manufactured
with cast iron, which emits pleasant and even warmth.
• All “wear and tear” stove parts are easily replaceable making
maintenance on Morsø stoves comparatively effortless.
In addition, Morsø guarantees that a supply of spare parts will
be available for at least 0 years after a model is discontinued.
• Morsø has worked closely with stove dealers since 85 , and
uses stove schools and ongoing product information seminars to
educate dealers, so that they can provide their customers with
the best possible advice on purchase, delivery and installation
of Morsø stoves.
• Every Morsø stove is assembled by hand – a craft that has been
honed by dedicated Morsø stove builders over the years.
• Morsø stoves have a simple and timeless design that suits all
homes and any kind of interior design.
• With more than 50 years of experience with cast iron and
combustion, Morsø is one of the leading experts in the field
of wood-burning stoves.

the Original
cast Iron Stove
8
N.A. Christensen was a dynamic man with the vision and the courage to start
his own iron foundry in Nykøbing Mors, Denmark a century and a half ago.
Armed with just a business degree and three years of experience working in the
finance department of an iron foundry in the nearby city of Thisted,
Christensen built the iron foundry that made the first Morsø cast iron stove.
The iron foundry envisioned and started by N. A. Christensen
in 85 had just five employees in the beginning and could
manufacture and supply anything that could be made with
cast iron – window frames, tombstones, cooking stoves,
pots and pans. While the raw materials, iron, coal and
casting sand were imported from England, Germany and
Sweden, the foundry also purchased used iron to melt and
reuse.
Christensen had the acumen to make profitable business
deals, the innate ability for creative ideas, and a knack for
finding talented workers, and he exploited his skills to
make Morsø Jernstøberi a great success. By the end of the
9 th century Morsø cast iron goods were widely seen across
Denmark, and some of the most popular products were cooking
stoves and wood-burning stoves that replaced the
popular old-fashioned jamb stoves.
BY APOIntMEnt tO
tHE rOYAL dAnISH cOurt
Just fifty years after N.A. Christensen opened the doors
of his iron foundry, Morsø Jernstøberi had become one
of the larger companies in Denmark with more than 50
employees and was considered a specialist in heating and
cooking products. Morsø installed stoves in about ,000
churches throughout Denmark from 890 onward, as well
as supplied stoves to many Danish schools. Morsø even
developed a special stove, Etatsovnen or Government
Department Stove, to suit the needs of several government
institutions such as Danish Mail, Danish Customs, Danish
Railways and the Danish Ministries. At the royal palace,
the Amalienborg Castle, Morsø installed empire-style
stoves, and also supplied cast iron stoves for several other
royal homes. In 9 5, Morsø Jernstøberi was awarded
the prestigious designation, Appointment to the Royal
Danish Court, an honor currently bestowed upon only 00
companies and/or individuals.
cOnVEctIOn PrIncIPLE
At the dawn of the new century, Morsø developed, along
with some other iron foundries of the time, a new and
revolutionary method for fast and efficient distribution of
hot air. The side plates installed on the firebox of the stove
form air channels where cold air from the floor is pulled in,
heated, and then blown out off the top. One of the earliest
examples of a Morsø stove with convection is the beautiful
Morsø Peacock stove.
cHALLEnGInG tIMES
During the 950s and 960s the advent and advancement
of central heating systems made the classic stove all but
obsolete. This was a critical time for both development and
demand of Morsø stoves, and Morsø got through this time
with aplomb. In the early 990s Morsø went through yet
another challenging period when iron foundries throughout
Europe were facing difficulty. Once again the storm
was weathered – but Morsø did not merely survive, it got
through a difficult time with success and on track for the
new millennium.
Since the original cast iron stove was made at the Morsø
Jernstøberi more than 55 years ago, Morsø has become
one of the leading providers of cast iron stoves around the
world. From Europe to Africa, North America to Australia
and Japan, today, Morsø cast iron stoves are sold in over
25 countries.

chimney draft and
Lighting techniques
6
cHIMnEY drAFt
The chimney is really your stove’s engine and the
chimney draft is one of the most important
factors for a well-functioning stove.
You have a good chimney draft when:
• There is a big temperature difference between the
chimney air and the outside air
• The weather is clear
• The chimney is of the correct height
You have a reduced draft when:
• The chimney does not have the proper height
• The chimney is screened or covered with trees
causing return smoke into the chimney
• The temperature difference is too small, for example this
can happen when the chimney is poorly insulated
• The outside air temperature is too high
• There is no wind
• The chimney is not tight
• The air supply reduced too much
In addition to leaks in chimney pipes, you should be aware
of potential leaks in the doors, cleanout doors, and pipe
connectors of your stove.
when it has a maximum humidity of 8-20%. %. It is a
good idea to obtain a Morsø moisture meter to determine
whether your wood has the correct moisture content. The
logs should be cut in the length appropriate for your stove,
split, and stacked in a dry place with a few inches all around
the stack, so it can dry naturally. As a rule firewood should
sit for -2 years after being cut down. Please see user
instructions for a clear guide to load quantities and
expected burn times
dIFFErEnt tYPES OF FIrEWOOd
Morsø stoves are all well suited for firewood and woodbriquettes.
If you use wood briquettes, you must make sure
that they are made from pure wood pulp, without any type
of treated wood. Softwood such as pine, larch, and spruce,
and hardwood such as oak and cherry, burn with a strong
crackle and throw sparks and are best burned in closed
wood stoves. Hardwood such as beech, maple, elm, ash
and birch burn with a strong and calm flame and are
therefore suitable for both wood stoves and open fireplaces.
Light firewood types such as spruce and pine have less
heating capacity than hardwoods, such as oak and beech.
Spruce and pine are perfect for the purposes of kindling as
they are easy to split into small pieces and burn for a
shorter period of time compared to heavy firewood.
Using wood to heat your home is economical and
environmentally sound. Wood is one of the few renewable
energy sources, and with today’s clean burning stove
technology, does not pollute the air you breathe.

Morsø and the
environment
8
Fire has been harnessed by mankind for thousands of years and to this day
we still have that primeval instinct to gather around the fire. But much has
changed since the open fires of our ancestors. We are now able to control
this heat, cleanly and efficiently with a modern Morsø wood stove.
In today’s world, a Morsø stove provides the user with one
of the most advanced wood burning combustion systems
around; and when used properly, it is amongst the most
environmentally friendly heating solutions in the world.
When using a Morsø wood-burning stove you are making
a positive fuel choice, a choice that helps us to protect the
very planet on which we live. Wood is a plentiful, renewable,
non-fossil natural product and when used as fuel it is
in effect ‘carbon-neutral’ meaning that the CO2 released
when burning is being absorbed by the tree that has been
replanted; in fact the same level of CO2 would have been
emitted by a tree that had been left to rot naturally on the
forest floor.
In Denmark, wood-burning accounts for roughly 5% of
the total annual domestic space heating. In real terms this
means that wood, a natural renewable energy, has replaced
an annual consumption of over 80,000 tons of oil;
roughly converted to an annual reduction of .5 million
tons in CO2 emissions. Under the Kyoto Protocol, Denmark
and many other countries has undertaken to greatly
reduce its CO2 emissions; it is already over 0% towards
its goal. Fact; burning wood in a Morsø stove helps to
reduce CO2 emissions and the greenhouse effect.
MOrSØ And StAndArdS
NORDIC ENVIRONMENT LABEL
Morsø produces some of the most energy efficient, clean
burning stoves in the world. Our stoves meet; even surpass
the strictest environmental standards in the world, including
EPA and Norwegian Standard NS 058/ 059 for the
lowest particulate emissions
Morsø’s commitment for a cleaner environment is further
recognised. In 2007 almost the entire Morsø product line
in Europe was certify by the Nordic Swan Eco-label, a
public environmental certification that sets requirements
not only for low particle emissions and high efficiency,
but it also recognizes companies that are actively reducing
their ‘environmental footprint’ in terms of production
practices and packaging. In short, having the Nordic Swan
Eco-label shows our continued commitment for a cleaner,
greener planet.
Integrated Design
22
Through the years, the names of renowned architects and
designers have become an indelible part of Morsø stoves.
Creative individuals have used their unique sense of form
and function to give Morsø an international reputation for
vibrant and beautifully designed products.
World-renowned designers such as Kaare Klint, Constantin
Sørensen, Acton Bjørn, Sigvard Bernadotte, Knud
Holscher, Queensbury, Hunt & Levien and Studio Levien
have
designed stoves for Morsø. The trend of the times have
determined whether the stoves are flamboyantly designed
with soft sculptural shapes or have a more tight and
minimalist design – but despite the trends and the times,
Morsø stoves are regarded as beautiful, solid classics.
KnuD HolscHer (1930-)
Architect and professor, Knud Holscher has through the
past few decades put his mark on Danish everyday life.
He is the designer behind one of the most successful series
of door handles: d line and products of his creative mind
are also AFA JCDeceaux’s elegant outdoor poster stand,
a bus stop windscreen, as well as a bathroom series
manufactured by Ifö.
Over the years Holscher has designed many famous
buildings: the Danish pavilion at the World Fair in Sevilla,
the National Museum in Bahrain, the Parking House and
Terminal B in the Copenhagen Airport, the University of
Odense, and the Cultural Center in Neumünster, Germany.
sIgvarD BernaDotte (1907-2002)
Prince Sigvard of Sweden was born with a creative mind
and a talent to transform that creativity into something
tangible. He studied art history and political science in
Uppsala, and in 1930 he enrolled at Konst-högskolan, an
art school in Stockholm. In 1934 Prince Sigvard married a
German commoner against his father’s will, for which he
immediately lost the title of Prince. His new name and title
was Count Sigvard Bernadotte of Visborg.
Through almost five decades he designed for Georg Jensen
Silversmith where his simple geometrical design of china
series, bowls, and flatware continue to be very successful
products for the company, Royal Copenhagen.
At the end of the 1940s Sigvard started a partnership with
another designer, Acton Bjørn. They introduced a new
concept, Industrial Design, and among their many recognized
works is the beloved Margrethe Bowl from 1950. In
the early 1960s the duo developed an elegant, enameled
stove and a series of cast iron pots for Morsø Jernstøberi.
Kaare KlInt (1888-1954)
In 1924 the Danish architect Kaare Klint started the Art
Academy’s furniture school and thereby laid the foundation
for a new type of education that influenced a long line
of Danish architects, furniture designers, and furniture
makers through the 20th century. His method was rooted
in function, choice of material and the weight and physical
size of the human body in relation to design. Klint designed
many furniture classics, including the Faaborg Chair
from 1914, the Box Pew from 1936, and the Safari Chair
from 1933.
In 1944, Morsø Jernstøberi launched a special stove designed
by Kaare Klint. The stove had a poem by author
and nobel price winner Johannes V Jensen on its side.

HolscHer
The d-line series are as useful and modern today
as they were when introduced in 1973.
KlInt
The Safari Chair from 1933 is the
essence of Danish design. A simple and
elegant chair made with superior
materials, the Safari Chair is a prime
example of Kaare Klint’s creative mind.
Sigvard Bernadotte and Acton Bjørn designed the Margrethe
bowl in 1950 and named it in honor of the Crown Princess
Margrethe four years later when the Danish constitution
was amended to crown Margrethe as first Crown Princess
of Denmark, who would succeed as Queen of Denmark after
her father, King Fredrick IX passed. The Margrethe Bowl
is an example of simple and functional design that has
lasted for over 50 years.

the artists
of Morsø
28
Morsø, the iron foundry and Mors, the island have been
a great source of inspiration for several Danish artists.
The massive, robust and elegant stoves have always been
intrinsically Danish and have stimulated the creative minds
of many writers, photographers and painters.
JoHannes v. Jensen (1874-1950)
A great Danish writer, Johannes V. Jensen was the recipient
of the 1944 Nobel Prize in Literature. In his career
that spanned 52 years, Jensen wrote several novels and
poems, and his body of work is of seminal importance to
Danish literature and culture in the 20th century. In 1910
he was awarded the Danish Government Grant, and ten
years later he received an honorary doctorate from the
University of Lund in Sweden.
In 1944 Morsø Jernstøberi launched a special stove designed
by the famous architect, Kaare Klint, and a poem by
Johannes V Jensen adorned the side of the stove.
The poem praises Morsø, while it criticizes war.
Jens sMÆruP sØrensen (1946-)
Jens Smærup Sørensen, a resident of the island of Mors, is
amongst the most recognized contemporary authors of
Danish literature. He made his debut as a poet in 1971 and
has over the years developed a unique style that makes his
stories both artful and relevant.
In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Morsø
Jernstøberi in 2003, Sørensen wrote a book of short stories
about the people and the land that birthed and reared the
iron foundry. Sørensen is the recipient of several literary
awards, including The Critic Award (1989) and the Danish
Academy’s Grand Prize (1990), and has also received
acknowledgements from Leo Estvads Foundation (2001)
and Albert Dams Memorial Foundation (2004).
Here Is an eXcerPt FroM ”DeParture 1845”
BY Jens sMÆruP sØrensen:
They were all lying down having a rest when we got there. Our bailiff
came up to the road when he saw us, and that morning, he said, he had
told everyone how things stood, that there would be a new owner now,
and so on.
So I shouldn´t think there´ll be a lot of harvesting going on today, he
said. There´s no one really feels like doing anything, and there´s not a
lot you can say to that!
No, I said. There isn´t..
No, we all need to collect ourselves a bit, don´t we? he said. I suppose
we think we´ve served your father well, and your grandfather for so
many years before him too! Well, a few of the older ones may even
have lent a hand in your great-grandfather´s time! And we think we´ve
served the family as well as we could!
Of that I am sure, I said.
And none of us knows how things will turn out now, he said.
No, I said. None of us knows that!
In the meantime one of the peasants had come forward. He had stood
there for a while just looking at us.
You must be Thorvald then, he now asked me.
No, replied the bailiff. Thorvald has long been over the hills and far
away, no, this is Harald! And this is Ferdinand and young Flora!
Are you going to leave us now, the peasant asked me. And go so far
from here?
Yes, replied the bailiff. As I said to you all, they are going way down
to the south of the country!
I suppose it´s a huge thing then, the peasant asked me, I should imagine
you´re going to have a fair old estate down there, no doubt?
Yes, you can be sure of that, answered the bailiff. Although Dueholm
isn´t too bad either, is it?
I wonder if you won´t come to miss Mors all the same, the peasant
asked me.
The bailiff had no answer to that. So I said we´d better be getting on.
Home again.
We turned and went, then stood awhile on the hilltop. I looked at our
farm down there in front of us. And I looked over at Nykøbing, and I
thought that nowhere else in the world could be so beautiful. And I looked
out over the inlet, and I looked at our Dueholm again, the long
white wings. The little ones didn´t understand a thing. Nor did I. It was
as if I was just standing there looking at a lovely picture. As if it were
already a memory.
In the artistic circles around Morsø Jernstøberi you also
meet three fascinating and dynamic female artists:
KIrsten KleIn (1945-)
On the island of Mors lives and works one of the greatest
Danish landscape photographers, Kirsten Klein. Klein
uses Mors as a subject and photographs its natural ups and
downs, its depths and heights, as she cultivates her
fascination for birds that live on the island.
In the past years Klein has been credited for photographers
published in two books that have a close connection to the
island of Mors: a beautiful and poetic book about Mors
published by the Tourist Association of Mors, and the
Morsø Jernstøberi 150th Anniversary Book.
Klein received the Department of Culture’s Fotographic
Book Award in 1994, the Thorvald Bindesbøll Award in
1995, and Art Award from the largest Danish newspaper,
Jyllands-Posten, in 2001.
MonIca rItterBanD (1955-)
Monica Ritterband is one of the most popular cultural
icons of Denmark. A successful career journalist, she gave
up journalism for a corporate life when she was offered
the position of Vice President of Information at Carlsberg
A/S, another Danish icon. But today Ritterband will not
be found in a business suit pedaling products for a corporation,
as she gave up corporate life to become an active and
successful artist. Over the past few years, Ritterband has
proven that she posses a true and extraordinarily creative
mind and understands how to express herself, successfully,
through paintings, sculptures, and illustrations. In 2003 she
created the charming and humorous “Musica” design for
the Danish design company, Royal Copenhagen, and in
2004 she created a new universe of design with “Humanerne”
for the world-famous Georg Jensen Damask.
Monica Ritterband is also a poet and was inspired by a
Morsø stove to pen a beautiful and lyrical verse.

to MY WooDBurnIng stove
In my highceilinged lofty tower, hour by hour,
you are presiding
round and sound and special and black
waiting in majestic serenity
for my freezing nose and toes to be back.
You are almost new,
capless you were brought by a muscular man
who puffed and blew.
You came by dolly, you came by van,
and he struggled and staggered about
and was on the verge of an angry shout.
He crowned you with a pipe on top
to send smoke and fumes and good thoughts
all the way up.
No doubt you will be my new great flame,
so say my nose and my toes,
they tell me the same,
maybe the best ever, who knows!
You swathe me in your warmest charms,
no gagging, no nagging, no clinging, no clanging
with long words and arms
and sharp, biting teeth,
you open your soft mouth and swallow everything,
shimmer out a light so mellow
with red and blue and ochre and yellow
that my slippers and my woolly socks
get the elbow and I let my toes tip-toe around
and I am submerged in your crackling sound
while my nose takes in the sweet and spicy smell
of apple and wood,
there is marmalade bubbling on the stove,
and at bedtime beech and oak is your food
and - I confess - a trifle of fir
that turns your crackle into a sputter
rather like a child that spits
his codliver-oil into the gutter.
I am in my own room,
my own reservation,
indeed, I have drawn into my private station.
Inside
from corner to corner there is a blanket,
invisible you know,
and outside
the moon is biding her time to turn the tide
from high to low,
my defences are down
and my duty has come to an end,
I am off, and so is my mask,
but you are on, my friend.
I am no longer the drudge of the day,
no longer the hilarious clown in oversized clogs.
I have no other task
than being at home, finally alone
with my woodburning stove
full of logs.
sIssle Honoré (1962-)
One of the most well-known Danish photographers, Sissle
Honoré was the driving force behind the creative and
interesting, After Closing Time (1995), a book about the
old Morsø Iron Foundry. Honoré earned a degree in
journalism in Denmark after which she studied photography
at the University of Westminster in London, where she
received a bachelor’s degree in arts. For the past eighteen
years, Honoré has lived and worked in London, and is a
sought-after freelance photographer for both Danish and
British media.
Since the early 1980s, Honoré has also been a popular and
preferred partner for musicians. She explored the artistic
side of photography with great success, and in 1997 five
of her photographs were included in the Royal Danish
Library’s collection.
Honoré was invited by Morsø to take a series of photographs
that now adorn the walls of Morsø office buildings.
Honoré had been chosen to take photographs of the Royal
Botanic Gardens, Kew’s calendar (2003), and has now
started a partnership with Gallery NB in Roskilde, Denmark
(2004).
Good Advice
for You
A Morsø stove is more than just a source of heat – it is an
integral part of your living space, and an indelible asset to your
home’s interior design.
42
A Morsø stove can last for decades, provided it is
maintained properly. Maintenance includes some simple
servicing of the stove before every firing session and some
basic maintenance for winter use.
• It is important to ensure that the door of the stove is shut
tight, which means that the sealing rope is not frayed
and is in good condition. If the sealing rope is not intact
it will lead to fake draft entering the firebox causing less
efficient combustion that is difficult to control.
• Always check the fireproof bricks in the firebox. It is
okay for the bricks to be cracked but if they have started
to crumble, they must be replaced. Because if the bricks
do not hold their original shape, the insulation in the
firebox is reduced, and the combustion temperature
becomes too low for efficient combustion.
• If you feel your stove needs a “face lift” to regain its
former beauty, it can be easily achieved by applying
some paint. Morsø markets a series of maintenance
products such as heat-resistant, rust-proof paint and
stove polish.
• If you are having trouble keeping the glass in the door
clean and free of soot, there are some guidelines you can
follow. First, ensure that the firewood is dry, because
burning of damp wood is one cause of soot on the glass
and in the chimney. Another important thing to consider
is the size of the logs. Firewood must be split so that the
logs are not too large.
Ultimately, it is important to operate the air supply
correctly. If there is too little air the gasses from the
wood are not burnt and lie on the glass as soot. Lack of
air can also cause the combustion temperature to be too
low, which results in soot in both the stove and chimney.
If you believe the combustion temperature is too low,
you can check it by using a Morsø Flue Gas Thermometer.
When placed on the flue right above the stove, the
temperature should be between 482 F and 572 F degrees
to achieve ideal combustion.
If you already have soot on the glass, you can just clean it
with the Morsø Glass Cleaner.

A Solid
Old-Fashioned Craft
44
Innumerable changes have taken place since the first cast
iron molds were filled at the iron foundry in Nykøbing,
Mors in 1853. But one thing still remains unchanged, each
Morsø stove is hand built by skilled craftsmen.
FrOM 1853 tO 1957
Mankind has used technique of melting and casting iron
for over 6000 years; and the basic principles continue to be
used today when producing a modern Morsø stove.
Essentially, a wooden impression (pattern) of a part is
pressed into a damp sand mold; raw or scrap iron and/or
other metals are melted down in vast melting pots and
when the metal has become liquid (molten) it is poured
by skilled foundry men into the pre-formed sand molds.
With a loud hissing, steam is driven from the damp sand
molds and the liquid metal starts to cool and solidify. Once
the metal has become solid, the sand mold is knocked
away leaving only the newly cast part. Thereafter, the part
is taken away for further preparation, prior to painting,
enameling or assembly.
In the early days Morsø Jernstøberi (iron foundry) made
cast iron parts for farm equipment, household tools, cooking
ranges and of course wood burning stoves. Demand
for these products was very high and by the early 20th
Century the workforce had grown to 350 employees and
the production facility expanded across more than 4 acres
of the downtown area of Nykøbing. In those days the hardworking
craftsmen and foundry workers annually transformed
over 7,500 tons of iron into useful Morsø products.
By the end of first half of the Century Morsø had become
recognized as one of the leading cast iron stove manufacturers.
Older stove designs began to be up-dated and with
the emergence of newly invented combustion techniques;
customized stoves began to appear for churches, schools
and various governmental departments. Morsø was not
only entering a new era for wood burning stoves, it was
leading the way.
MOdern tIMeS
Continuing its tradition of cast iron stove manufacture; in
1957 Morsø embraced the latest technologies to streamline
its production process and become more efficient.
Designers replaced wood for the pattern-making and
adopted modern materials like aluminum or plastic; these
new materials made the patterns stronger, more durable
and even more accurate. Casting techniques were refined
so that the pouring temperature of the molten iron could be
regulated; techniques that are used to this day, resulting in
our world-famous thin-wall castings; free from blemishes
or imperfections and not just on the surfaces but through
the whole thickness of the metal itself.
Today our 150 year heritage continues; our stoves are
made from 98% recycled material and each stove is built
by highly skilled crafts people; men and women proud of
their craft and who each offer a superior quality assurance
to you, our customer.

Mini
Morsø
More than 100 years ago Morsø Jernstøberi produced its first
miniature cast iron cooking range. It was originally made as
a salesman’s sample, something practical and symbolic, and
much better than a photograph that salesmen could take along
with them as they went door to door to sell Morsø products.
The miniature cast iron cooking range was inspired by the
Morsø quick-heating cast iron cooking range made in the
1900s. The miniature cooking range had the same detailed
craftsmanship as the original, and was a perfect miniature
rendition of it. Production of the miniature cooking range
was stopped in the early 1990s, but has now begun again.
In 2003, Morsø introduced an old novelty, the miniature
or doll’s cast iron cooking range that was faithful to its
predecessor made almost a century ago. Along with the
doll’s cooking range, comes a series of miniature cast iron
kitchen utensils, which include four pots and one pan. The
miniature cooking range is now being sold as a high-quality
toy for children. It weighs about 15 lbs, is 6.5” high, 10”
wide and 9” deep. A beautiful and elegant little cooking
range, it is the ultimate dream for every little girl.
tHree dAnISH
The cooking range has over
time become a sought-after
subject for toy makers.
In 1952, the Danish royal
Today the miniature cook-
new MInIStOve 6140
We are pleased to introduce a new miniature stove, this
time one from the popular 6100 series. The Morsø 6100
series has become one of our most popular stove lines in a
very short time, both in Denmark and abroad.
The Minestove is, of course, made of original cast iron.
The door can be opened just as with the full-sized stoves,
and with a tea light in the stove, this minimalist little classic
spreads warmth and comfort.
An Honorable
designation
Morsø Jernstøberi was bestowed with the designation
“Purveyor to the Royal Danish Court” in 1915, and in
1969, the designation was changed to “By Appointment
to the Royal Danish Court”.
At the beginning of the 19th century the Danish royal
family started using the designation, “Purveyor to the
Royal Danish Court” to recognize businesses that catered
to the royal household. A hundred years later in 1904 the
designation “By Appointment to the Royal Danish Court”
was awarded for the first time. The distinction between
the two designations was that the “Purveyor to the Royal
Danish Court” is given to companies and/or individuals
that have a direct business relationship with the King
or Queen, while “By Appointment to the Royal Danish
Court” is awarded to companies that supply products
and/or services to the royal household.
wHO IS AwArded
To be awarded these honorable designations it is necessary
for the company or individual to have had a regular
business relationship, lasting 10 years or more, with the
Royal Danish Court. It is also required that the company
is well established, financially sound, well managed, and
well respected.
A royal designation can not be purchased. A company or
individual seeking such a designation must apply for it
and after a thorough evaluation the royal family personally
awards the designation. The designations are awarded each
year on Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday.
deSIGnAtIOn HOLder
It is tradition that the “By Appointment to the Royal
Danish Court” designation is made to one specific
individual in the company, the designation holder. It is
customary for the designation to stand as long as the
company meets all the royal requirements, and if the
designation holder dies or leaves the company, or if the
company changes ownership, the company must apply for
a renewal of the designation.
OnLY FOr tHe BeSt
There are only ten remaining monarchies in Europe, and
therefore very few European companies are awarded royal
designations, making them very elusive and prestigious.
Currently, only 100 companies and/or individuals have the
privilege of using either Danish royal designation:
“Purveyor to the Royal Danish Court” or “By Appointment
to the Royal Danish Court.”
King Christian X was so impressed with the high-quality
products from Morsø used in the royal household, that
he awarded the company the prestigious “Purveyor to the
Royal Danish Court” designation in 1915.
tHe deSIGnAtIOn wAS CHAnGed
Since the early 1950s the designation “Purveyor to the
Royal Danish Court” has frequently been changed to
“By Appointment to the Royal Danish Court,” when it was
time for the designation to be renewed. There have been
cases where the company has grown so large that there
is no personal contact with the royal family even though
the company continues to deliver products to the royal
household. This was the case with Morsø Jernstøberi and
it was in spring 1969 that King Christian IX changed the
company’s royal designation to “By Appointment to the
Royal Danish Court.”
Foundry Museum
52
The old foundry stands in the center of Nykøbing. After having
been neglected for a number of years, the buildings have undergone
an extensive restoration and subsequently turned into a museum,
the Danish Foundry Museum.
Here, in the old foundry shops, you may relive the 150year
long history of Morsø Jernstøberi through pictures,
original tools worn by the use of many hands, and wellpreserved
old products.
The exhibition, the largest of its kind in Denmark, shows
an impressive selection of the many products produced at
Morsø Jernstøberi through time: tile stoves, oven ranges,
pots and pans. However, not only does the exhibition show
these durable cast iron products; the visitors are also told
the fascinating history of the many people who worked
in the factory, in the production shops and in the offices
generation after generation.

the northernmost Morsø
Stove in the world
In the northern part of East Greenland, far from the coast
and the settlements stands a small hunter cabin. This cabin,
named ”Aalborghus”, is primarily used by native hunters
who will go there with their dogsleds to seek shelter from
the freezing cold and snowstorms. In addition, the Sirius
Patrol makes frequent use of this facility – especially the
fine heat the cabin offers.
Until a few years ago, the cabin was equipped with an
old, traditional Morsø cast iron kitchen stove. Today, this
has been replaced by quite a special stove that Morsø
has constructed specially for ”Aalborghus”. In addition
to supplying the lifesaving heating, the new stove serves
as a cooking stove so that food may be cooked and water
boiled.
The oven was delivered in Denmark, and the Sirius Patrol
undertook its transportation and installed it in the cabin.
On the wall behind the stove, you can make out a choice
brass plate with an inscription saying that the stove was
donated by Morsø Jernstøberi. Notice the matches on the
table to the left of the oven. They are there, ready for use,
so you don’t have to fumble for matches with your fingers
frozen stiff.
