GEOGRAPHY MASTERCLASS“Ms McGrath and Mrs Clark took 15 Year 10 students to aGifted and Talented young people’s Geography Masterclass atthe University of Leicester on Wednesday 7 th <strong>July</strong>. Dr GavinBrown encouraged the students to consider aspects of theirlocal area and how they could be changed in the future.The <strong>Belvoir</strong> students enjoyed working in groups, but somefound the mini‐lectures more challenging. They also enjoyedchecking out the University’s catering services! We had ascenic drive back to Bottesford dropping everyone off in theirvillages.”Pupils working on their MasterclassKE7 SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGEIn June six pupils from <strong>Belvoir</strong> <strong>High</strong>competed against other schools inthe Melton and Leicester area in fiveScience and Technologychallenges. The pupils who tookpart were Tansy Hallam and NathanBateson in Year 7, John Flemingand Beth Mawby in Year 8 andLydia Ball and Fraser Dunlop inYear 9. The pupils worked reallywell as a team as well as in pairs.The challenges included makingand flying a hot air balloon – Tansyand Lydia’s delicate work makingtheir large tissue paper balloon broke arecord by reaching the top of the sportshall!Other challenges included making andreleasing a rocket car, extracting theDNA from kiwi fruit and making theloudest bang by reacting metals withacid. The teachers didn’t get awaylightly either; we had a ‘HeathRobinson’ type challenge (cause andeffect) which was judged by all of thepupils and which Mrs Clarke and I won!Mrs Price Head of ScienceDRUGS AWARENESSPC Rob Showell came into schooland ran a drugs awareness lessonwith each of the Year 9 tutor groupsas part of their Personal SocialHealth and Citizenship Education.During the lessons, pupils got to findout what drugs are, how and whydrugs are classified, theconsequences for possession ordealing drugs both in legal terms andon their lives, and what happens if youare suspected of carrying drugs.Pupils were also able to view replicadrugs and ask questions about theireffects on the body. Pupils agreedthis was a valuable and informativeexperience.YOUNG MAYOR NOMINATIONSNomination forms for the YoungMayor of Melton are available on theMelton Borough Council website. Ifyou are 14+ and would like to standfor young Mayor, you can apply bycompleting the form, you will needthe application supported by amember of the school staff.Summer is a great time to be thinkingabout this, as you will have extra timeto prepare your election campaign,make posters, videos etc and thinkabout the local issues that reallymatter to young people. It’s theiropportunity to really make adifference to young people in thisarea. I would be great if the nextyoung mayor came from <strong>Belvoir</strong><strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>.
