THE INTERIM CONSTITUTION OF NEPAL, 2063 (2007)AS AMENDED BY THE FIRST TO SIXTH AMENDMENTSPART 1PRELIMINARY1. Constitution as the fundamental law(1) This Constitution is the fundamental law of Nepal. All laws inconsistentwith this constitution shall, to the extent of such inconsistency, be void.(2) It is the duty of every person to uphold this Constitution.2. Sovereignty and state authorityThe sovereignty and the state authority of Nepal are vested in the Nepali people.3. NationHaving multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-religious, multi-culturalcharActeristics with common aspirations, and being committed to and unitedby a bond of allegiance to national independence, integrity, national interestand prosperity of Nepal, all the Nepali people collectively constitute the nation.4. State of Nepal(1) Nepal is an independent, indivisible, sovereign, secular, inclusive*Federal Democratic Republican State.(2) The territory of Nepal shall comprise(a) the territory existing at the commencement of this Constitution, and(b) such other territory as may be acquired after the commencement of thisConstitution.5. Language of the nation(1) All the languages spoken as mother tongues in Nepal are the nationallanguages of Nepal.(2) The Nepali language in the Devanagari script shall be the language ofofficial business.(3) Notwithstanding whatever is written in clause (2), the use of one's mothertongue in a local body or office shall not be barred.
