THE INTERIM CONSTITUTION OF NEPAL, <strong>2063</strong> (<strong>2007</strong>)AS AMENDED BY THE FIRST TO SIXTH AMENDMENTSPART 1PRELIMINARY1. <strong>Constitution</strong> as the fundamental law(1) This <strong>Constitution</strong> is the fundamental law <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nepal</strong>. All laws inconsistentwith this constitution shall, to the extent <strong>of</strong> such inconsistency, be void.(2) It is the duty <strong>of</strong> every person to uphold this <strong>Constitution</strong>.2. Sovereignty and state authority<strong>The</strong> sovereignty and the state authority <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nepal</strong> are vested in the <strong>Nepal</strong>i people.3. NationHaving multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-religious, multi-culturalcharActeristics with common aspirations, and being committed to and unitedby a bond <strong>of</strong> allegiance to national independence, integrity, national interestand prosperity <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nepal</strong>, all the <strong>Nepal</strong>i people collectively constitute the nation.4. State <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nepal</strong>(1) <strong>Nepal</strong> is an independent, indivisible, sovereign, secular, inclusive*Federal Democratic Republican State.(2) <strong>The</strong> territory <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nepal</strong> shall comprise(a) the territory existing at the commencement <strong>of</strong> this <strong>Constitution</strong>, and(b) such other territory as may be acquired after the commencement <strong>of</strong> this<strong>Constitution</strong>.5. Language <strong>of</strong> the nation(1) All the languages spoken as mother tongues in <strong>Nepal</strong> are the nationallanguages <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nepal</strong>.(2) <strong>The</strong> <strong>Nepal</strong>i language in the Devanagari script shall be the language <strong>of</strong><strong>of</strong>ficial business.(3) Notwithstanding whatever is written in clause (2), the use <strong>of</strong> one's mothertongue in a local body or <strong>of</strong>fice shall not be barred. <strong>The</strong> State shall translate thelanguage used for such purposes into the language <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial business for therecord.56*Amended on 2065 Jestha 15 (May 28, 2008) by the <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Constitution</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nepal</strong> (Fourth Amendment) Act, 2065.
