EDITORIAL
Dear Friends of Bucerius Law School,
Academic ceremonies are a highlight on a university’s
annual calendar. This is equally true for the awarding of
the “Bachelor of Laws” degree to our class of 2008. By
bright sunlight, professors, proud parents and relatives,
honoured guests of the university – as well as friends and
supporters – gathered together. The combination of conviviality
and youthful exuberance, academic sincerity and
easy humour made this academic ceremony exceptionally
poignant. The artistic and rhetorical contributions of
our students made it especially so. With pride and delight,
we conferred the title of honorary professor for the first
time in Bucerius history. Professor Reinhard Zimmermann
and Professor Christoph H. Seibt are an asset to the University
and will continue to enrich our academic life on
campus.
Please take a look at this newsletter which contains information
about the third annual career fair at Bucerius
Law School, the annual Gala Ball, the inaugural lecture by
Professor Bumke and the visit of US Consul General,
Karen E. Johnson, and many other activities at and around
the Law School.
ACADEMIC CEREMONIES
Awarding of the LL.B. Degree and the First Honorary
Professor Titles
by Aline Kalb, Student
With the awarding of the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) on
March 8, 2008, the 107 graduating students of the
class of 2008 have hit the first highlight of their legal studies.
More than 450 guests, among them Professor Manfred
Lahnstein, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the
ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius, Markus
Baumanns, Executive Vice President of the ZEIT-Stiftung
and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Bucerius Law
School, as well as Henning Voscherau, Chairman of the
Supervisory Board of Bucerius Law School, filled the auditorium.
The festivities began with the ceremonious entrance
of the professors.
The LL.B. Graduates
Following the praise and comments of Professor Karsten
Schmidt, President of Bucerius Law School, for the Bachelor
degree as a full academic degree and a useful basis
for various fields of work, he stressed that Bucerius Law
School is an „Agent of Change“ with respect to the configuration
of the national university landscape and praised
Bucerius as an „extraordinary pioneer“. With a wink to
the graduates, he explained that the completion of their
degree is an “investment which will increase in value.”
With a look back at the early days at Bucerius Law School,

Mr. Baumanns praised the success of the concept of the
institution. While ten years ago, the aim was merely finding
a new way in the face of prolonged standard legal
education, the school has since become an institution
that - thanks to its students and staff - is “ambitious beyond
the rim, and is producing excellent lawyers”.
Professor Christoph H. Seibt, Professor Karsten Schmidt and
Professor Reinhard Zimmermann
Another highlight was the recognition of the first two
Honorary Professor titles in the history of Bucerius Law
School. Professor Reinhard Zimmermann, Director of the
Max Planck Institute for International Private Law in Hamburg
and Dr. Christoph H. Seibt, Partner at Freshfields
Bruckhaus Deringer, were recognized for their exemplary
academic contribution and their support of the young
University.
The speech given by Erika Andreß, President of the „Hanseatic
Higher State Court” (Oberlandesgericht), entitled
„The Requirements of the Legal Careers“ introduced the
graduates to an informative, interesting and last but not
least amusing look at her job as a judge. It appears, she
said, that perhaps the most indispensable attributes of a
lawyer are humour and not taking oneself too seriously in
order to maintain one’s sanity.
The speech was followed by student awards. Representatives
of Montblanc awarded the prize for best Bachelor
work to students Fabian Walla und Stephan Kuntner. For
the fifth time, the firm Baker & McKenzie awarded the
prize for best Seminar work – which this year went to
Maike Lensch. In conclusion, Frédéric Schneider intoned
that the receipt of their diplomas is an important milestone
in the path to becoming a lawyer. Photos of the
event can be seen at www.bucerius-event.de
IALS CONFERENCE HELD AT BLS
of Law Schools (IALS) conducted its conference
on “The Law of International Business Transactions:
A Global Perspective” at the Bucerius Law School. During
the conference, co-funded in part by the ZEIT Stiftung
Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius and the Wang Family Foundation,
some 100 speakers and delegates from 30 countries
discussed topics including Globalization and Its Impact on
organizations and academic institutions, including the
World Trade Organization, World Bank, Hamburg World
Economic Institute, Tsinghua University (Beijing), Stellenbosch
University (South Africa), and many others. From
Bucerius Law School, Professor Karsten Thorn spoke
about the Summer Law Institute in Soochow, China, while
Professor Clifford Larsen, UBS Professor of Law and Dean
of the Bucerius/WHU Master of Law and Business Program,
moderated panel discussions and considered the
concept of pairing law and business studies. Bucerius
THE NEGOTIATION CHALLENGE
MLB-Students successful
The Negotiation Challenge is an international negotiation
competition which was hosted by the HHL Graduate
School of Management in Leipzig from April 4 to 6,
2008. Ten teams from around the world were admitted,
including three US universities
(Harvard Law School, UC Hastings and Dartmouth College)
as well as teams from India, Spain, France and the UK.
After three rounds of negotiations (which then led to the
final round), the MLB team had fallen one point short of
Harvard Law School and UC Hastings on the overall ranking.
This meant that Harvard Law School and UC Hastings
were the finalists against HHL who ended at the top of
the list after the three rounds. The MLB team secured the
third place overall whilst Harvard and UC Hastings beat
HHL in the final round.
THIRD GRADUATES FAIR HELD
Interviews Galore with Impressive Potential
Employers
by Annette Bärwinkel, Leiterin Career Office
Career planning does not begin at the end of one’s
studies. This was the mantra of the participants of
the third annual career fair hosted by the Bucerius Alumni
Association and the Career Office March 5, 2008. The
hosts were pleased by the overwhelming interest and
participation of supporters, students and graduates.
Potential employees and graduates took the opportunity
to establish contacts and secure informational interviews
through the online career network of the Alumni Association.
400 students seeking internships and jobs took part
in the interviews held in designated spaces on campus.
Graduates from the entering classes of 2000 and 2001
were on hand to provide advice on landing the first “real”
job as an associate, trainee or project director. In both
tents where the fair was being held, as well as the University
foyer, students from all entering classes visited
representatives from more than 30 firms who support
Bucerius Law School. Students agreed that the fair was a
tremendous opportunity to access valuable professional
resources. In fact, as one walked by, one could hear the
often-repeated phrase, “I would love to be there next
year.”

WE HAD A BALL!
The Annual Law School Gala
by Lola Nick, Student
March 8, 2008 was the date: students, professors
and employees celebrated with family and friends
as well as supporters and sponsors of the Bucerius Law
School at the annual University Ball.
As in previous years, the event took place at the
Kempinksi Hotel Atlantic on the Alster. Over 800 guests
got decked out in their finest evening wear and waltzed
and boogied the night away at the sold-out event.
Organizers Alexandra Nautsch, Eva Fischbach, Inga Ruck
and Moritz Hundhausen (entering class of 2006) greeted
the guests and invited them to sit down to a lovely dinner.
With a little sustenance, the group then proceeded to the
ballroom to dance to live music. For those whose feet
needed a brief respite, the piano bar next door offered a
place to sit and take in the Alster view.
Formal waltzes dominated the early part of the evening
until midnight, when a DJ took over and inspired the
crowd with his electric spinning until the wee hours of
the morning.
A special thanks once again goes out to the organizers
who put in months of hard work above and beyond their
studies to make sure a good time was had by all –thank
you!
ACADEMICS AND RESEARCH
IMAGES OF MANKIND IN LAW
Christian Bumke held Inaugural Lecture
by Hauke Schüler, Academics
Over 100 guests were invited to the Bucerius Law
School auditorium on February 22 to hear Professor
Christian Bumke, Commerzbank Chair of the Fundamentals
of Law, speak about “Images of Mankind in Law”.
Christian Bumke laid out various approaches to the image
of humanity within judicial philosophy, conceptualizing its
layers from behavioural patterns to idealistic appeals.
Hence, Mr. Bumke managed to look at the human individuality
rather than at its dissolution in the plurality of
images of mankind.
Following the lecture, Christian Bumke and his wife
Katharina Harms invited the audience to a lively and jovial
reception. If his inaugural address is any indication, we may
expect from Mr. Bumke not only eloquent contributions to
the dogmatics and theories of law, but also many works
regarding philosophic history and law critique.

THE PRIVATIZATION MANDATE
Seventh Hengeler Mueller Library Lecture
by Jonas Asmelash, Resource Development
On March 4, 2008, an audience gathered for the seventh
annual Hengeler Mueller Library Lecture, taking
place for the first time in the Oval Auditorium of the new
Library at the Bucerius Center for Graduate Studies –
Deutsche Bank Hall. The theme of the evening was „The
Privatization Mandate: Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) and
the Danish Transportation Ministry Sell Scandlines AG.“
Viola Sailer und Hans-Jörg Ziegenhain, both partners in
the Munich office of Hengeler Mueller, gave a highly inspiring
lecture about the process of an international business
transfer from the planning stage through to the
closing, using the real-world example of the Scandlines
company sale.
The particularities of the final deal were the result of the
fact that the German and Danish states ultimately stand
behind Scandlines AG. European legal specifications such
as government assistance law, the equity principle and
transparency are fundamentals in such deals.
Particularly insightful for the audience was to hear once
again the importance of legal counsel in a deal requiring
relevant understanding of issues pertaining to tax and
business analysis, and involving multiple players, from
investment bankers, law firms, accountants and tax advisors.
Following the engaging presentation, refreshments
were served and the discussion continued in an informal
setting.
LABOR LAW GUEST LECTURE
Focusing on Non-Standard Labour Law
by Nathalie Putterer, Academics
Opening the new year, the first lecture in the Labour
Law Guest Lecture Series dealt with Germany´s two
largest employers – the Church and the State, both of
which lay claim to non-standard labour law. Following the
invitation of Professor Matthias Jacobs, Professor for Civil
and Labour Law, Albrecht Nehls spoke about labour law
within the Church on February 19, 2008. On February 28,
2008, Klaus Pawlak of law firm Ruge and Krömer in Hamburg,
then gave a thorough overlook of employment opportunities
in the public service sector.
Current Questions about Tariffs 2008
by Jörg Noltin, Academics
Given the current issues of minimum wages in the
postal sector and the strikes by German train conductors,
Martin Diller of donor law firm Gleiss Lutz gave
yet another insightful lecture on labour law. Upon invitation
from Matthias Jacobs, he spoke about latest developments
in the field of tariff law on March 4, 2008.

PODIUM DISCUSSION
The Roll of Private Universities
by Frauke Hamann, ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius
The theme of the first broadcast of the university quartet,
live from Bucerius Law School, the first of four
scheduled for 2008, fit the location of the event perfectly:
„Private Universities – Serious Competition for Public
Universities?“ Among the participants were four university
professors, invited by German Radio Deutschlandfunk,
manager magazine and the ZEIT Foundation. Special
guest was Professor Joachim Treusch, president of the
private school, Jacobs University Bremen.
In total, there are 71 private universities in Germany,
accounting for three percent of all enrolled students.
“Going bankrupt is a real possibility, and that is a power-
ful motivator,” said Treusch. Jacobs University must be
ambitious and needs to double its third-party funds in the
next five years. Professor Wolfgang Herrmann added that
private universities were „important impulse-givers“,
giving public universities many incentives – from directly
choosing its students to study fees.
Prof. Dieter Lenzen, Free University Berlin, noted that not
all faculties are suitable for privatization. Furthermore,
Germany is lacking a culture of donating in large
amounts. The FU alone would need a sum of 15 billion
euros to fully function. Bucerius Law School´s situation
was unique, he added, as it’s funding is buffered by the
ZEIT-Foundation. Prof. Karsten Schmidt then layed out the
particularities of Bucerius Law School.
Left to right: Michael Kröher (manager magazin), Professor
Wolfgang Herrmann, Professor Jürgen Hesselbach, Christian
Floto (Deutschlandfunk), Professor Joachim Treusch (hidden),
Professor Dieter Lenzen
The essence of the discussion was that without doubt
private schools have added to a sense of competition. A
competition, said Braunschweig Technical University’s
Jürgen Hesselbach, that was „valuable, but which should
not cover up the problems of some private universities,
as seen at the University Witten-Herdecke, where student
fees are going to be drastically increased.“
The next university quartet will take place on April 25,
2008, at 7.15 p.m. at Bucerius Law School, and will focus
on the rising problem of school drop outs.

SCHLUTIUS SUPPORTER’S CONCERT
In Bucerius Auditorium
by Jonas Asmelash, Resource Development
On February 21, 2008, the Bucerius Law School auditorium
witnessed the fifth edition of the law firm SES
Schlutius Eulitz Schrader´s concert event, sponsoring
musical activity on campus. About 300 friends, clients,
students and members of the school enjoyed classical
pieces by Melchior Franck, Händel, Mozart, as well as
more contemporary music from George Gershwin and
1930´s swing. Without doubt, the highlight of the evening
was the ambitious rendering of Franz Liszt´s Mephisto-
Waltz Nr.1, performed by student Eva Maria Hoyler (Entering
Class of 2005). After the concert, Christian von Bitter,
lawyer and partner at SES, thanked the students wholeheartedly
for finding the time to partake in extracurricular
musical activities, despite the school’s rigorous curriculum.
SES sponsors and supports the music scene on campus,
particularly the chamber orchestra. In return, the students
and alumni gave their traditional concert under the
direction of Helmut Tschache, a humorous and engaging
host.
HOSTING THE US CONSUL GENERAL
by Birte Gall, Director. Clifford Chance International Office
The amiable relationship between Bucerius Law
School and renown law schools in the US was reflected
in the visit of the US Consul General, Karen Johnson,
on March 7, 2008. The Consul took time in the morning
to tour the campus and learn more about the concept
of Bucerius Law School und our numerous international
programs. During an hour-long conversation with LL.B.
and MLB students, she discussed the different student
issues in Germany and the US and the advantages and
disadvantages to studying in the two different countries.
Both German and American students have displayed
great interest in the opportunity to study in each other’s
homelands. While each year 50 students are sent from
Bucerius to study in the US, 60 American students come
to Hamburg each fall to participate in our exchange program.
Independent Kosovo
o
by Myriam Lemke, Academics
n February 28, 2008 Marc Weller, Director of the
European
Center for Minority Issues, lectured Bucerius
students on the youngest declaration of independence
in Europe – Kosovo. The expert in minority law was
invited by Professor Doris König, Chair of Public Law,
General Administrative Law, and International and European
Law. Weller explained the decisive legal and political
questions calling upon his extensive wealth of knowledge
of the Kosovo conflict.
Weller’s lecture displayed once again that international
law principles such as the right to self-determination,
humanitarian intervention or the territorial principle are
subject to a continuous development process and must
be taken in context of the political reality. Weller was very
relaxed as he took questions about the country’s future,
the political costs, practical questions regarding passports
and the effects of the media coverage. It was a very
informative evening after which the audience walked
away with a deeper understanding of the Kosovo question.
MIGRATION AS A CHANCE
Rita Süssmuth speaks
by Mathias Schudlo, Student
On February 20, 2008, Professor Rita Süssmuth, former
Federal Minister and Speaker of the House,
spoke at an event organized by the Studium Generale and
the Christian Democratic Student Organization (RCDS)
about migration as a challenge and opportunity for our
society.
Bucerius Law School, Mathias Schudlo, Dr. Rita Süssmuth and
Karsten Schmidt, President of Bucerius Law School
Süssmuth advocated for the acceptance of the fact that
Germany is an immigration country. Despite reform of
immigration laws, and although Germany is dependent on
immigration – if it wants to buffer the effects of demographic
change –, legal hurdles remain too high, she said.
PROMOTING CULTURE
Talk at TaylorWessing
by Mathis Kreyer, Student
On March 12, Bucerius students gathered for a lecture at
TaylorWessing law firm in the “Hafen City” in the Hamburg
harbor. The draw: lecturer Marc Schwieger. Mr.
Schwieger is a partner, international Creative Director,
and CEO at Scholz & Friends NeuMarkt. In discussion with
Andreas Meissner, partner at TaylorWessing, and Hariolf
Wenzler, CEO Bucerius Law School, Schwieger fielded
questions on the topic “How does one promote cultural
events?”
Left to right: Andreas Meissner, Marc Schwieger, Maja Stadler-
Euler, Hariolf Wenzler
The promotion expert, who advises Hamburg’s Senator
for Culture, Karin von Welck, described cultural promotion
as a niche with a great deal of creative freedom. This, and
the self-concept of the promoter, part of a “creative
class”, explains the willingness to take on such projects,
despite lower salaries or „pro bono“ advertisements for
culture. Of particular interest to students were taboos
such as the shortcomings of advertising and the future of
the advertising industry in the age of the internet.

Third Chair Tournament
von Janika Bode und Isabelle Moog, Studentinnen
Fans have longed for it – on March 6, 2008, it was finally
game-day: the chair of Professor Matthias Jacobs (Civil
Law, Labour Law and Civil Action Law) pitted against the
chair of Professor Rüdiger Veil (Civil Law and German and
International Trade Law). After a victory for the labour law
side last spring, and a draw last summer, it was the trade
law-team who left the field victorious. After two 35minute
halftimes, the won 8:5, thus levelling the score,
and leading to a joyous celebration, during which plans
were made for the next legendary clash.
