FOG-305ChapterSURFACE(A000)SubjectSpot Seal Coating, Skin Patching(A050)DESCRIPTIONSCHEDULINGSeal coating surfaces, by hand or mechanical means, with hot liquidbituminous material and covering with aggregate to seal existing flexibleor rigid surfaces (Section Required)Schedule spot-seal operations during the warm summer months becausetemperature and moisture restrict seal-coating operations. Seal whenraveling or cracking becomes prevalent or when surface allows water topenetrate.RECOMMENDEDPERSONNEL Highway Superintendent (1)Highway Equipment Operator (8)RECOMMENDEDEQUIPMENT Pickup truck (1)Distributor (1)Loader (1)Spreader (mechanical or tailgate) (1)Dump truck (3)Broom (1)Steel drain roller (optional)Rubber tire (if available)RECOMMENDEDMATERIALS 9M limestone (35 tons)Emulsion RS-2(840 gallons)ENVIRONMENTALIMPACTS Do not use diesel fuel at the job site. Discuss with crew the requirements of the job.2. Place traffic-control devices as necessary.3. If necessary, broom surface clean of dirt and debris.4. Apply liquid bituminous asphalt (rate of application is 0.3 gal/S.Y.)5. Spread aggregate uniformly over asphalt (rate of application is 25lbs./S.Y.). Then roll.6. Remove traffic-control devices.Note: Air temperature in the shade and away from artificial heat is to beabove 40°F during the entire seal-coating operation.Have adequate bituminous asphalt available so as not to delay the rest ofthe crew during a reload.Begin spot seal coating so trucks hauling aggregate to work site will nottravel over areas newly sealed. If performing this operation on high volume (150–300 tons/day) withexpanded crew, add a rotary broom and rubber-tire roller to theoperation.Special Note: Determine accomplishment before leaving job site.10/11 Page 2 of 2
