<strong>Washington</strong> <strong>Dulles</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Airport</strong> – (IAD)Thank you for your interest in joining the Transportation <strong>Security</strong> Administration’s <strong>Washington</strong> <strong>Dulles</strong><strong>International</strong> <strong>Airport</strong> team. If you are selected as a Transportation <strong>Security</strong> Officer (TSO), you will play animportant role in the overall mission of the Department of <strong>Homeland</strong> <strong>Security</strong> (DHS) by contributing to thedaily security requirements at <strong>Dulles</strong> <strong>Airport</strong>.Given the nature of our mission at TSA, there are some unique expectations of the position for which you haveapplied. Specifically, you will be responsible for identifying dangerous objects in bags, cargo, and/orpassengers, and preventing these objects from being transported onto aircraft. You will be required to performvarious tasks such as: hand-wanding passengers, pat down searches, lifting of baggage (weighing up to 70pounds) and performing screening duties using various electronic equipment. The TSO job is stressful at timesand physically demanding. You will need to stand continuously for anywhere between one (1) to four (4) hourswithout a break and walk up to two (2) miles during a shift. You will be required to perform the screening dutiesin a courteous and professional manner at all times.We believe, however, that TSA also provides a rewarding opportunity for you to serve your country. Please make reference to this document if you choose to call ourlocal office.<strong>Washington</strong> <strong>Dulles</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Airport</strong> is located on 11,000 square acres nestled in the center of NorthernVirginia. The Northern Virginia area is experiencing unprecedented growth due to a revitalized IT industry andan increase in construction for both residential and business real estate. <strong>Washington</strong> <strong>Dulles</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Airport</strong>serves as the heart and soul of this community. <strong>Washington</strong> <strong>Dulles</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Airport</strong> is the home to 15domestic, 20 international, and 8 regional carriers serving 80 domestic and 28 international destinations. Theairport also serves over 13 million domestic passengers per year and over 4 million international travelers,screening almost 9 million checked pieces of luggage. As a member of the IAD Transportation <strong>Security</strong>Administration (TSA), you will support a screening force currently staffing 30 passenger checkpoint lanes and28 baggage screening pods at a Category X airport (largest category code). Our current workforce consists of95% full time staffing and 5 % part time staffing working towards a team of over 700 Screening personnel.What to expect once you’ve joined TSA at IAD:Salary Full time: $31,698Part Time: 15.19 per hour. (Pay includes 24.22% Locality Pay)Orientation At orientation, you will be sworn in as a Federal Employee taking the same oath of office as thePresident of the United States of America. Once you are sworn in, you will spend your first day completingnecessary paperwork such as benefits, federal forms and other required new hire documentation.Schedules As a TSA Officer (Screener), you will be working in a 24/7 airport environment. Work hours forthis position consist of shift-work on any day from Sunday through Saturday (with two consecutive days off)which may include irregular hours, nights and week-end shifts, changing shifts, and split shifts. Specific workschedules will be determined upon successful completion of your initial training.10/29/2013 1


Part time schedules may be adjusted to fit the operational need of the airport as well as the need of the part timeofficers.Most employees are required to work weekends and holidays. Due to current schedule demand, part-timeOfficers can work up to five (5) days per week. The minimum amount of hours a part-time Officer can work isSixteen (16) hours per week or Thirty-two (32) hours a pay period. The maximum hours a part-time Officer canbe scheduled is Thirty (30) hours per week or Sixty (60) hours per pay period.Training If you are being hired as a Transportation <strong>Security</strong> Officer (Screener), your training will consist ofat least three (3) weeks of training running Monday through Friday (with possible Saturday and Sunday),each day will consist of 8 hours per day. Both Full and Part-time employees must complete this initialtraining schedule. Once your initial training is complete, you will be required to finish approximately 70 hoursof On-The-Job-Training (OJT) for both passenger and baggage prior to being “certified” as a Transportation<strong>Security</strong> Officer (Screener). The OJT will be accomplished while working your normal Full or Part-time shift.Once you are certified as an Officer, you will be required to update your certification on an annual basis.Benefits As a federal employee you are eligible for benefits as a full-time and part-time federal employee. TheFederal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program has many plans to choose from and all at very reasonablerates, which can be paid from pre-tax income. In addition, to further promote employee wellness and affordablehealth coverage, part-time TSA Transportation <strong>Security</strong> Officers (TSOs) are able to take advantage of reducedFEHB premiums. TSA will pay the maximum government contribution allowed for health benefits under theTSA Health Benefit Incentive for Part-Time TSOs. All part-time TSOs will pay the same lower cost for federalhealth benefits as full-time employees. This means that TSA pays a greater portion of FEHB premium costs forpart-time TSOs. If offered a position with TSA, you should make sure that you ask for and receive a fullexplanation of the benefits you are eligible for, before accepting a job offer.Transportation TSA employees at IAD are eligible to participate in Department of Transportation publictransportation benefits if they are in an area where public transportation is available.Uniforms Uniforms are provided to employees by TSA. You will be measured for your new uniforms at yourfirst orientation session. It is the responsibility of the employee to arrive to work with a clean and neat uniformand adhere to the TSA Uniform Guidelines. Employees must provide their own black leather shoes with nonslipsoles.Parking <strong>Washington</strong> <strong>Dulles</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Airport</strong> currently participates in a PILOT program where employeeparking is paid for by the agency. TSA employees will receive a hang-tag for the rearview mirror of theirvehicle in order to park in the Employee Parking Lot on airport grounds. Employee parking lots at IAD providefrequent ground transportation to the airport terminal.Work Environment As a Transportation <strong>Security</strong> Officer (Screener), you may be assigned to work baggagework areas. While working in baggage areas, you will sometimes be subject to working in both winter andsummer environmental elements. You will also need to be physically able to regularly handle baggage weightof up to 70 pounds.Unscheduled Overtime An airport environment is frequently subject to irregular operations based on bothflight schedule irregularities, as well as unforeseen weather circumstances. At times it becomes necessary tohave employees work unscheduled overtime in order to accomplish the TSA mission.Transfers Currently IAD is working toward meeting the needs of the traveling public by filling necessaryvacancies. While future transfer to other airports are a possibility, you must have been employed at the currentlocation for at least one (1) year is not routinely granting transfer requests.Promotion Potential The Transportation <strong>Security</strong> Administration is still growing and evolving; therefore, thepotential for promotion action is great.
