Hanaa AlmoaibedCSR Unit Head“CSR is seen as aset of sociallyresponsibleinitiatives thatcompanies adopt inorder to better servethe society andeconomy in whichthey operate. Theyare activities thatdo not directlycontribute to thefinancialperformance ofcompanies, but thatallow companiesto operate inconditions thatprovide a moresustainable climatefor success.”TEAMCONTRIBUTIONSCommunity Serviceand PhilanthropyVersus CorporateSocial ResponsibilityAlthough there is no solid consensus on the definition of corporate socialresponsibility (CSR), many take it upon themselves to label their activitiesas CSR while taking pride in their accomplishments. However, if wetake a step back and examine what CSR has come to mean internationally, and the kinds of activities companies in Saudi Arabia are engagingin, we will find a clear gap. What seems to be occurring is thatmany companies and organizations takeit upon themselves to label their communityservice activities and their philanthropicendeavors as CSR. Perhapssome of these initiatives are relevant tothe field, however, they appear to onlyscratch the surface of what needs tobe done. Of course, CSR cannot lookexactly the same in every country, aseach organization and geographic locationhas its own specifications and legallandscape. However, there have beenmany initiatives to bring countries togetherto agree on principals that guidetheir CSR behavior, distinguishing CSRfrom traditional giving.Let’s begin by trying to define the termsat hand: Community service, philanthropyand CSR. Community service isdefined by Princeton University as “aservice that is performed for the benefitof the public or its institutions”.Traditional forms of community serviceinvolve setting sums of money asidefor the benefit of the underprivileged, contributing money or time to socialcauses such as feeding the homeless, providing shelters for the homeless anddonating sums of money to various differentcauses. Philanthropy is definedsimilarly, however in the case of philanthropy, organizations or individualstend to donate large sums of money todifferent causes, rather than donatingtime. Both of these concepts are oftenseen as virtuous behaviors that satisfya company’s duty to society. On the other hand, CSR is seen as aset of socially responsible initiativesthat companies adopt in order to betterserve the society and economy inwhich they operate. They are activitiesthat do not directly contribute to thefinancial performance of companies, but that allow companies to operate inconditions that provide a more sustainableclimate for success.CSR differs from community serviceand philanthropy on three main levels:the incorporation of the strategies intocore business objectives, the involvementof stakeholders, and the emphasison sustainable practices thatbenefit society and the environment asrelated to organizational practices.Core Business StrategyCSR is seen as a part of the core businessoperations, whereas communityservice is seen as an afterthought. Aportion of the bottom line at the end ofthe year is taken and donated or usedfor a short-term community projectin classic community service behav-ior. With CSR, a clear budget is setfor ongoing engagement that countereffectsthe negative byproducts of acompany’s activities and contributesto the sustainable development of thecompany’s stakeholders rather thansegmented parts of society.Stakeholder ConsultationCSR describes company engagementwith stakeholders in order to providegoods and services that impact societyand the environment beyond what thelaw constitutes. Although traditionalforms of community service and philanthropydo service the community andsometimes the environment beyond therequirements of the law, those who engagein either rarely consult their ownstakeholders, or haphazardly choose abeneficiary of a financial contribution.Sustainable BehaviorCSR considers the community and theenvironment key stakeholders, not limitingcompany and organization beneficiariesto shareholders and customers. In this case, CSR focuses on sustainablepractices that first engage stakeholders, then benefit them or minimizenegative effects on them. Sustainablebehaviors are those that benefitus today without compromising futuregenerations from benefiting from sameresources.Moving Away from CommunityService in the Public andPrivate SectorsAlthough these key differentiators distinguishCSR from traditional formsof giving, how companies engage andwhat they do varies by sector, locationand objective. Many companiesaren’t sold on the idea that settingaside a budget for CSR will reap thenecessary financial benefits to make itworthwhile, and prefer continuing withfragmented community service activitiesfrom time to time to gain a positivereputation in the community. Companiesthat operate in regions that disregardthe importance of structured CSRand sustainability often do not realizethe potential benefits of CSR strategies. The public sector and regulatoryclimate in a country also contributes tohow companies engage in sustainablepractices and which avenues they pursue.Research shows that a regulatoryclimate that does not push for highersocial and environmental standardsleads to a disregard for the standardsthat are being adopted by others. However,as more companies adopt CSRstrategies and begin reaping the benefitsof this (a more competitive internationaledge, attracting and retainingHR, a better reputation, more meaningfulengagement, increased efficiency, etc.) there will most likely be a shifttowards more structured approaches—something that is already being seen inthe region. The table below shows howCSR activities can look different fromfragmented community service:TYPE OFCOMPANYPetrochemicalOilBankHealth SectorFood andBeverageElectronicsCommunity ServiceExampleDonation to localorphanagePlanting treesDonation to localfemale charityorganizationHolding a communityevent forchildren withcancerHosting arecyclingcampaignFunding aneducationinitiative ina developingcountryStandards and ReportsSeveral international organizationshave codes, standards and benchmarksthat help organizations determine whatissues are material within their sectorsand how to engage their stakeholders. These are based on global standardsand benchmarks that vary but aresimilar in essence. These standardsclarify the difference between communityservice and CSR, mainly dueto the level of detail and complexityof engaging in CSR. One example isa set of standards provided by the in-CSR ExampleCommunity recycling campaign in cooperationwith local municipalityParticipating in carbon off-setting activitiesthat involve the strategic plantingof trees to curb CO2 emissionsProviding guidance on sustainable investmentfundsFunding an “early detection” campaignoffering mammograms to women at riskof Breast cancer in rural areas and providingthem with proper medical guidanceand care.Ensuring that foods are sourced throughtransparent supply chains by requiringinternational certifications such as aFairTrade certification or a RainforestAlliance certificationFunding an awareness campaign aboutthe proper disposal of electronics, providing a disposal point and workingwith local companies and municipalitiesto properly recycle and dispose ofmaterials.14 Rawabi News Issue 24 Jan-Mar 2011 Rawabi News Issue 24 Jan-Mar 2011 15

There is a set of ISOsustainability regulations, regulationsset by the United Nations, as well asthe Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)regulations. All of these guide companiesto engage in CSR initiatives thatpush towards sustainable developmentand the engagement of stakeholdersin determining the effects of the organizations’activities on society andthe environment. These reports canbe audited to ensure that they are reportingon issues that relate to globalsustainability indicators. In 2008, onlyone company in Saudi Arabia had produceda sustainability report that waschecked by an external auditor, GRI:the National Commercial Bank (NCB).By 2011, only two more companiesjoined in: Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospitaland the International Medical Center. This, however, is bound to change inthe upcoming years due to pressurefrom international competitors and theincreased awareness surrounding theissues.Motivators and DeterrentsThe motivation to engage in CSR comesfrom many directions—and some ofthe motivators are similar to those thatmotivate companies and individuals toengage in community service: a desireto contribute to the development of societythrough projects that benefit thecommunities in which they operate.Others engage solely because of thetrend to “look” responsible by claimingto have social responsibility initiatives, and do it for marketing and PR purposes—orthey are blamed for having thisobjective. However, the majority ofcompanies will engage because of theglobal threats caused by unsustainablebehavior in the private sector and beyond, that are exasperated by a disengagementof business and governmentin issues of sustainability.International CooperationThe UN Global Compact is a policyinitiative for businesses “that are committedto aligning their operations andstrategies with ten universally acceptedprinciples in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption.By doing so, business, as a primaryagent driving globalization, can helpensure that markets, commerce, technologyand finance advance in waysthat benefit economies and societieseverywhere.” It describes commongoals that businesses around the worldare trying to achieve and provides aframework to develop, implement anddisclose sustainability practices, aswell as advance sustainable businessaround the world. Engaging in theGlobal Compact would signify a pushtoward transparent and sustainablebusiness practices that would advancesocial development. In ConclusionHaving a structured CSR strategy incorporatedinto core business, andensuring stakeholder engagement is adifferent approach to community developmentfrom traditional communityservice and philanthropy. In this sense, plastics manufacturing companies, forinstance, will engage with governmentagencies in setting proper restrictionsand regulations on the use and disposalof the materials they produce, hospitalswould ensure patients are receivingefficient care in alignment with theirneeds, clothing factories would restrictthe use of harmful chemicals and takeproper measures to ensure the healthand safety of their workers, as well assource materials that offer secure livelihoodsto farmers. These are all examplesof how organizations can takecommunity service beyond fragmentedinitiatives, align them with core businesspractices, and still benefit fromthe positive feedback stakeholders willgive the company.References:Crowther, David.
