The <strong>Champion</strong> • Wednesday 30 January 2013Undeclareddivorcesettlementresulted inbenefit fraudA BENEFITS claimant who failedto notify the Department of Workand Pensions about the proceedsfrom a divorce settlement hasbeen prosecuted for fraud.Virginia Murphy, 55, of OctaviaHill Road, Litherland, pleadedguilty at Sefton Magistrates onJanuary 25, to three chargesrelating to a claim for Incomesupport, from December 2008 toFebruary 2012, and claims forHousing and Council Tax Benefitsfrom December 2008 toSeptember 2010.Brian O’Connor, prosecuting,told the court that Ms Murphyhad received a settlement of£43,123 in 2008 which was inexcess of the prescribed limits ofcapital allowed.The total overpayment ofbenefits was said to be £15,025.Mr Ellis, speaking in herdefence, said that Ms Murphy hadsuffered for many years in a “veryviolent marriage” and in 2005finally left her husband “withFire crews tackle blazeat Seaforth docksSIX fire engines battled a blazeat Seaforth docks on Monday,January 28.A 40–metere tall verticalconveyor belt, which loadsgrain at the Royal Seaforthgrain terminal, caught fire ataround 12.20pm.Fire crews tackled the blazeand prevented the firespreading.
