3. INSTRUMENT INSTALLATIONThis section provides you with the information needed to physically and electrically install theEFIS-D60.Selecting a Remote Compass Module LocationFinding a good location for the EDC-D10Aremote compass module is critical to anaccurate EFIS-D60 heading display. Keep inmind that calibration can compensate forsmall static magnetic fields superimposedupon the earth’s field; it cannot takeinto account dynamic effects likeAC currents, non-constant DCcurrents and non-stationary ferrousmaterial (e.g., an electric turncoordinator). Use the followingsuggestions to help you find a goodlocation for your EDC-D10A.• Keep the EDC-D10A away fromany source of magnetic fields(such as electrical equipment and currentcarryingwires) and ferrous material.• Move a handheld compass throughout thespace surrounding your location to get a roughidea of the suitability of your chosen location. If the needle deviates significantly frommagnetic north in any given area, that locationwould not be ideal for the EDC-D10A.• The EDC-D10A can be mounted anywhere inthe aircraft (away from magnetic interference)such that its pitch is as close to that of theEFIS-D60 as possible. It does not need to bedirectly along any axis of the EFIS-D60. Itshould be mounted with the long axisparallel to the wings, the electricalconnector facing toward the front of theplane, and the mounting tabs on the bottom. The bracket used to hold the EDC-D10Amust hold the EDC-D10A at the same pitch, roll, and yaw as the EFIS-D60 with respectto the airframe. We recommend that you usean electronic level, if available, to makesure the EDC-D10A is aligned with theEFIS-D60 to better than 1 degree.Connector towarddirection of flightConnector forward andtabs mounted downSide view of EDC-D10A, tabs mounteddown and aligned within 1 degree of pitchwith EFIS-D60EFIS-D60 Installation Guide 3-1
