NEWS RELEASE PR 1197 19 February 2009 For immediate release Planning for the future Ensuring that West Norfolk remains a great place to live, work and visit is high on the agenda for the Borough Council's planning team, which has been busy preparing a document that will guide future development across the whole of the area up to 2025. The document, referred to as the Core Strategy, will be the subject of a public consultation running from 23 February to 6 April and contains a series of draft proposals which seek to balance the need to regenerate the area to secure its economic future, develop housing to meet the demand for people to have decent homes to live in and at the same time preserve, protect and enhance the qualities that make West Norfolk a great place to live - village communities, heritage, and beautiful coast and countryside. Cabinet Member for Development Cllr Vivienne Spikings explained: "We have to be clear about how we want the area to develop in the future. That means having a clear strategy. Our planning officers have done a lot of work gathering views, finding out what the priorities are and assessing the various options. But as with everything, these plans and proposals will have practical implications for local residents and businesses. That's why we want to find out what people think. We need to check that we've understood and reflected what people have already told us and that we taken into account the key issues facing West Norfolk. I would urge people to come to our consultation events, have a look at the proposals and tell us what they think." 60
Some of the main issues and questions covered in the draft Core Strategy are: - Broad location and scale of development in all our towns and villages. - Potential development locations within King's Lynn, Hunstanton, Downham Market and the area adjacent to Wisbech. - How new housing growth will be shared across the borough. - How will we ensure that new affordable housing is provided and what percentage of new development should that be? - How do we ensure that the necessary infrastructure is provided to support new housing development? - How to avoid flood risk areas and protect our environmental assets Exhibitions are being held between 2pm and 7.30pm at Hunstanton town hall on Tuesday, 10 March, Downham Market town hall on Thursday, 12 March and King's Lynn town hall on Tuesday, 17 March. For anyone unable to make it to one of the exhibitions, all the documents can be viewed online at www.west-norfolk.gov.uk and comments can be submitted direct. Once complete the Core Strategy document will form part of the Local Development Framework which, when finalised, will form the blueprint for the development of West Norfolk until 2025.
