<strong>Edward</strong> <strong>Kaseman</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>History</strong>: <strong>Kaseman</strong> 1900-1972Edited by Ann ErlingHISTORY OF EDWARD AND CHRISTINA KASEMAN<strong>Edward</strong> <strong>Kaseman</strong> was born on September 4, 1900 in McIntosh County, NorthDakota. He was the son of Bernard and Paulina <strong>Kaseman</strong>, nee Hepper. The<strong>Kaseman</strong> homestead was 15 miles southwest of Wishek, North Dakota inMcIntosh County. <strong>Edward</strong> lived on this farm with his parents and elevenbrothers and sister until he reached the age of 22. His education was four years ina rural school.Christina Schilling was born on May 2, 1904, in Edmonds County, South Dakota.She was the daughter of John and Rosina Schilling nee Kessler. Christina’sparents lived in McIntosh County, North Dakota until 1903, at which time theymoved to Hosmer, South Dakota. Christina was the second oldest of six children;three sons and three daughters. She lived with her parents on their farm tenmiles west of Hosmer until her marriage. She attended school for one year,<strong>Edward</strong> and Christina were married in the Lutheran Church at Hosmer, SouthDakota on October 24, 1922. They are the parents of six sons and two daughters.From 1922 until 1927 they lived on the farm of <strong>Edward</strong>'s parents. In 1927 theystarted their own farmstead. A barn and house were built on the site they hadchosen about one and a half mile southwest of his father’s farm. They beganfarming with two quarters of land, about eight milk cows, eight or ten horses,and a few young heifers and steers. They farmed for thirty eight years.In the 1930's when the drought hit the Dakotas, things were not easy for theyoung family. In 1934 there was no crop at all and in 1937 the grasshoppers atethe crop. During this time <strong>Edward</strong> worked for the WPA. Their perseverancecarried them through the difficult years. In the 1940's it began to rain, the cropsgrew and prices rose.


Page 2Four sons served in the United States army. Adam in Korea, Clifton in Korea,Marvin in Alaska, and Howard in Germany. <strong>Edward</strong> Junior served in theNational Guard. By the grace of God all returned safe and sound.In 1959 they started to think of retirement. They built a new house in Wishek andmoved into it in 1960 and went into semi-retirement. They did some-farminguntil 1965 when they sold their farm interests. They had started farming with 360acres of land and a few head of horses and cattle. When they retired they had agood line of farm machinery, a herd of cattle, and 1,525 acres of land.<strong>Edward</strong> did carpenter work until 1971, when he went into full retirement.He now spends his time fishing, watching television, and gardening.Christina spends her time crocheting, knitting and quilting. She hasmade a quilt for each of her children and grandchildren.Participating in the Celebration of the Golden Wedding Anniversary of <strong>Edward</strong>and Christina <strong>Kaseman</strong> are their eight children, 27 grandchildren, and manyfriends and relatives.The direct descendants of <strong>Edward</strong> and Christina <strong>Kaseman</strong> are:1. Arthur - Born August 17, 1923 in McIntosh County, North Dakota.Present address; Wishek, North Dakota.Occupation; farmer.Married on September 23, 1945 to Gertrude Meidinger who was bornin McIntosh County on September 22, 1921.Arthur died on February 6, 1996.Arthur and Gertrude had three daughters:Marion was born August 13, 1950 and was married October 25, 1969to Robert Houn, born February 23, 1948.Janice was born August 15, 1953.Ruby was born November 3, 1958.2. Leona Susanne - Born March 11, 1926 in McIntosh County, North Dakota.Present address; 1221 Bristol Ave. Stockton, California.Occupation; housekeeper. Single.Leona Susanne died on December 5, 2005.
