Words from O’BrienTrainingAround theWorldRecently CSDA held its Operator Certificationand Estimating classes in Florida.Over 1,500 students have graduatedfrom nine different classroom and handsoncourses since they began in 1992.What is different with these classes isthe students. The majority of studentshave <strong>com</strong>e from North America, butmore and more students from aroundthe globe are now attending. This sessionattracted two students from India,two from Trinidad and Tobago and onefrom Canada.CSDA training programmes haveevolved over time and have been supplementedin recent years by online training.Online training is be<strong>com</strong>ing increasinglypopular, and will certainly meet the needsof many students, but the hands-onand classroom courses will always bea preferred method of training. Trainingmembers from foreign countries is a plusfor CSDA, since not every country is ofsufficient size to be able to organize anassociation and provide training. <strong>Floor</strong> Prep &Few industry segmentshave experiencedsuch a dramaticgrowth as concretefloor preparationduring the last twodecades. The floorpreparation industry ismuch more then justpreparing concretefloors as many othermaterials are usedfor flooring. This sectoris very interestingbecause demolition,renovation, as wellas concrete cuttingcontractors very oftenhave the need forfloor preparation onjob sites. So manyof these contractorshave started to offerconcrete floor grindingand polishing servicesas well.A floor grinder from General Equipment.<strong>12</strong> PDi • Is s u e 4 - 2009 • Oc t - No vSome years ago the founder and majority owner of HTCSweden AB, Håkan Thysell, was asked how many square metresof concrete floor he thought there were in the world. He guesstimatedat around 30 billion square metres worth about EUR 97billion (US$145 billions). Other key people have been asked thesame question and of course is very difficult to answer. However,all agree there is a huge amount of concrete flooring in the worldand has been increasing rapidly as most of the buildings that areconstructed now have concrete floors.“Such potential”The concrete is often just the foundation and is covered withdifferent types of coatings, such as epoxy resins, tiles and othertypes of flooring material. But as epoxy and similar are the most<strong>com</strong>mon type of floor covering it also needs to be replacedoccasionally. It is estimated that about 60-75% of all concretefloors in the world are covered. Tim Van Der Veen at HusqvarnaConstruction Equipment say that an additional <strong>25</strong>-35% of concretefloors is not either covered or polished (e.g. raw concretefloors that have no sealer, paint, epoxy e.t.c). The remaining,less then 5%, according to Tim, are assumed polished whichmeans a great potential. Polished concrete floors have <strong>com</strong>eto stay and can probably expect an faster growth over thenext five years. Polished concrete flooring is even growingin popularity in private households as well as in industrialenvironments. This option has not yet taken off in Europebut is be<strong>com</strong>ing very popular in USA. It is not only the visualappearance that is attractive, but also concrete flooring is alsofar more environmentally friendly and more cost effectivethan epoxy floors.“Quite a journey”Initially floor renovation and preparation was made withsingle head grinders, often rather difficult to work withand also very time consuming on large projects. HåkanThysell with his <strong>com</strong>pany HTC Sweden is believed tobe the first in the early 1990s to develop a new andmore efficient method for preparing concrete floors. InHTC’s footsteps followed the <strong>com</strong>panies Diamatic, nowcalled Blastrac, and King Concepts, which is now partof Husqvarna. These three <strong>com</strong>panies, together withmaybe a few other manufacturers and with HTC asleader, started to push the concept during the 1990s.First the focus was on machines and tools for floorpreparation, like efficient removal of epoxy, glue andother types of covering in order to prepare a perfectconcrete surface for new coatings. Next step wasto convince the market that actually the concretefoundation was good enough to be used as a finalfloor product, after several steps of polishing. Evenhere HTC Sweden was first to launch a model withseveral polishing steps, which finally provided a highglazed concrete surface easy to maintain, was environmentallyfriendly and <strong>com</strong>fortable to walk on.They called the method Superfloor that is now verywell accepted today. Currently most of the world’smanufacturers of concrete floor grinding equipment,as well as manufactures of different types ofshot blasting, milling and cleaning equipment, alsooffer their own systems for high glazed concretesurfaces, including colouring and staining.The release of new and more efficient concretefloor grinding equipment started during the

The techniques have since been radicallyimproved with more efficient grinding machines offeringgreater stability, easier maintenance, remotely controlled steering,more options and better handling of dust and slurry. The removalcapacity, as well as the evenness, has been improved with multiplegrinding heads and planetary systems in <strong>com</strong>bination with moreefficient diamond tools. The single grinders, which were initiallythe only option, are still used but the three or four head grindersnow dominate, as they offer a more even final finish and are easierto operate. The size of the machines has also increased from the20 to 45 mm diameter grinders to between 650 to 1000 mmfor one planetary system and from 1 to 2.5m for two or moreplanetary systems working together.The really large scale grinding and polishing jobsare increasing, which will lead to the development oflarger grinders in the near future, as there is a marketfor mega size grinders.Massive interestContractors that offer concrete floor preparationand polishing continuously need informationand training about the advantages of theseservices. Also if designers and architects canbe convinced about the advantages of usingpolished concrete as a final flooring product theconcept will further increase in popularity.The polishing concept had its first major break through afew years ago, even though HTC launched it during the 1990s,and is still growing in popularity. At the latest World of <strong>Concrete</strong>show in Las Vegas around 55 <strong>com</strong>panies demonstrated concretefloor grinding and polishing concepts, including diamond toolsfor concrete floor grinding. At the <strong>com</strong>ing WOC show in 2010at least 40 exhibitors are expected in this sector.World of <strong>Concrete</strong> is perhaps the best example ofa show where these machines and methods have foundthe right platform and audience. But several otherexhibitions have also seen the potential in thisproduct segment. The Atlanta basedshow International <strong>Concrete</strong> <strong>Polishing</strong> andStaining Conference, is a good example ofthe strong interest for this sector in the US.The show, which took place 1 - 4 Octoberthis year, gathered a big number of suppliers.Building and construction equipment showsall over the world has started to target thissector. The DEMCON show in Stockholmnext year is another example that will have astrong focus on concrete floor preparation andpolishing and will also contain a large demonstrationarea. It will also be interesting to see theapproach for this segment at Bauma 2010. Theworld’s branch associations for concrete sawingand drilling, demolition and industrial clearancehave also included concrete floor grinding on theiragendas. In many countries it is now considereda new service from these contracting groups andtraining is also organised from the associations.CSDA in the US is a good example of that.When a product segment develops at such aspeed, as concrete grinding and polishing, thereis a big risk of overheating. This is also somethingthat not only affects manufacturers but also contractorsthat invest large amounts in equipment,tools and training. It is difficult for contractors to choose froma wide variety of brands and quality and pricing. The market isalso experiencing a big number of low budget machines beingintroduced where just the colour and the logos vary, butare all made in the same Asian factory. This is the samefor tools. For quite some time the market has been experiencinga tremendous price war on tools and there arenumerous copies and patent infringements.Reaching a hundredThe concrete floor preparation and polishing industry has seen aremarkable growth during the last two decades. He added that almost everybuilding in the world has at least one concrete floor thatneeds preparation and has a potential to be convertedto HTC Superfloor, but did not have specific figures.He said that the challenge was to create awareness of thepossibility to refine concrete floors to HTC Superfloor andsee the great benefits of it instead of covering the floors withvarious coatings.Tim Van Der at Husqvarna Construction Productssaid that it is very hard to even make a guess but he thinksit is huge.Len Sniegowski from Superabrasive declined to give specificnumbers. “Because we are a global <strong>com</strong>pany that reachesall over the world, I would have to say that the U.S. and Asiaand Europe are the top markets at this pointfor concrete floor preparation and polishedconcrete but Australia, New Zealand and SouthAmerica are <strong>com</strong>ing up quickly to catch them,”says Len Sniegowski.“The intangible things in the market makeit very difficult to speculate with any degree of accuracywhat the global market value of concretefloor preparation and polishing is or will be. AllI can say is that, even in a recession, we have seengrowth all over the world through new distributorsand existing distributors getting creative intheir approaches to existing and potential contractors.More new customers around the worldare preparing concrete and polishing concretewith the Lavina Surface Preparation Systemthan last year. Those customers will continueto find new projects and to offer their services aswell as the older <strong>com</strong>panies in the market whohave been polishing for 10 years now. Because aproperty increases in value when a Lavina SPS floor is installed thatwill only drive the consumer to want more polished concretein their homes and work places.”Gebhard Grass at Schwamborn believesthat the market value is about EUR 200 to 300Million when it <strong>com</strong>es to concrete floors thathave the potential to be converted in to a finalflooring solution.“Divided in to certain regions I believe thatEurope stands for some <strong>25</strong>%, North America thesame, Middle East, Asia, Australia and New Zealandabout 35% and Africa and South America whatremain of the concrete floors that can be polished,”says Grass.Steve Klughertz from Blatrac Diamatic believesthat the early estimates on polishing published severalyears ago were a little premature in growth and size.“While we believe the size of this market will grow aboveany other sector, we also believe there are some inheritrisks associated with polishing as it relates to stayinglong term at the forefront,” says Steve Klughertz, whodescribes those risks as follows:“1. Contractor <strong>com</strong>petence and quality of workmanship. Thisvaries too much for some owners and architects, so we are focused onraising this quality and workmanship through specification enforcementand working with the owners well before the contractors areinvolved to set proper expectations. This mostly relates to the largeMats Tikkanen, HTC Sweden AB.chain of retail owners who have 100 or more locations but it istheir wish to work on the premise of ‘single source responsibility’ tocontrol cost and end product. In other decorative or lower volumesegments we are focused on colour programs and overlays wheresquare foot costs are less likely to be under pressure.“2. The other problem possibly facing this market is continuedfragmentation of the diamonds and chemicals. While theseitems represent a fairly low percentage of the price per foot theyseem to be the items that get the most attention from contractorsas cost savings, rather than quality equipment or labour <strong>com</strong>petence.Material handling is also a major concern so for all three ofthese items Diamatic globally is working on smarter equipment,diamonds, and more user friendly chemical <strong>com</strong>positions with theleaders. We will introduce an extended line of grinders, materialhandling vacuums, and leading edge diamondtechnology all in 2010.“3. Diamatic USA will announce a newpartnership in 2010 at WOC that will significantlyenhance the chemical side of polishing,addressing owners’ and contractors’ demandto create a longer lasting, user friendly materialthat can be rejuvenated. This new product willintroduce polishing to several new market segmentsnot currently focused on.“4. As a part of long term polishing acceptance,maintenance must be addressed. Tothis note a new maintenance certification programmeand partnership will be announced in2010 as well as new line maintenance products,pads, and machines. These products have beenlaunched in the USA in this last quarter and willhave a full <strong>com</strong>mercial launch in 2010 at WOCin Las Vegas. To date, we believe there has been500M-700M feet ‘professionally’ polished inthe USA that could use a level of maintenance. We expect thisnumber to be in the millions in the future.“5. We also estimate that approximately 100M is beingmaintained at some level but this is an educated guess based onchemical sales and interviews with maintenance <strong>com</strong>panies aswell as some chains. This number should grow asapplications in broader markets accept polishing asthe viable flooring solution.”The potential for polishedconcrete floors in refurbishment andnew projects?Steve Klughertz eluded to this earlier and added:“While not all markets are equal we believethe systems approach with a very deepproduct offering is what contractors arelooking for. Owners on the other handaccept the fact polished concrete is avery real solution and flooring option,but given the relatively young market(10-<strong>12</strong>years) there is still some maturityto take place and probably some consolidation. If we wantthis market to grow and be applied on all the available concretesurfaces, quality, consistency, and contractor <strong>com</strong>petence all needto grow. All jobs cannot be subject to the cheapest diamond orwatered down chemicals to save a few pennies per foot.”Husqvarna’s Tim Van Der Veen thinks there is still significantgrowth potential of this product. “Technological advances are beingfuelled by the rapid rise in demand, providing opportunities foreven further improvements in the economics and environmentalbenefits of this kind of flooring alternative. We believe there is stillsignificant growth to <strong>com</strong>e for this product,” he says.In terms of polished concrete floors in new products Timadds: “I would say at this point it is still quite small since so manyof the decision makers are still to learn about the properties andfull benefits offered by polished concrete systems. This can only beavoided by slowing way down during your first diamond tooling step.If you start with 30 grit metal bond tools, then that will be your sloweststep in the entire process. Don’t rush it. If the whole job takes 10 hours,spend 5 hours grinding. The polishing steps go so much faster andbetter when you take your time with the grind. We grind at a slowerRPM, so it only makes sense to move much slower. When we get tofoam heads and resin pads, we can move a bit faster because we stepthe RPM up to 800. The diamonds are hitting the floor much fasterso you don’t have to sit in one spot for so long. Also, when you get tothe resins, you are not removing a lot of concrete so it doesn’t pay togo super slow. Go slow on the grind so you can make up some timeon the polishing steps.Another big mistake is using cheap Densifier or not using it at all.The problem here is that people are trying to polish the hardest surfacepossible and if one skip this step he run the risk of wasting the resinIs s u e 4 - 2009 • Oc t - No v • PDi 21


tools on a soft concrete surface. They will literally disappear before theoperators eyes in about 100 square feet. A good resin pad should lastroughly 10,000 sq ft. Also, a cheap Densifier will be mostly water andthe chemical reaction with the cement that surrounds the fine aggregatein the concrete will be minimal and that would undermine the wholeprocess of densifying the concrete in the first place. Not to be out done is the V-Harr polishingpad. “They make a world of difference in the polish after 800 Resin,”Dennis Von Ruden, the President of General Equipment Company,based in Minnesota, USA, shares some interesting thoughts basedon his his long time experience working in the US surface preparationequipment.With increased emphasis being placed on the repair and restorationof our infrastructure, a growing number of contractors are faced with thechallenges associated with removing a wide variety of coatings fromsurfaces. Contractors must now deal with the task of not only removingthe coating, but preparing the surface for a new coating application. Inthese situations, contractors must make three important decisions:1. The type of coating that needs to be removed.2. How to economically remove and dispose of the coating materials.3. How to properly prepare the old surface for a new coating application.“Everything is not epoxy”Most facility owners do not know what type of coating material is on theirfloors, when it was applied or who performed the work. Most owners lookat every material as an epoxy, so much so that the word has be<strong>com</strong>ea generic term for most types of floor coatings. Thereare literally thousands of epoxies being produced bya similar number of manufacturers. Urethane-coatingtechnology has seen explosive growth in recent yearsand now, likewise, thousands are available for almostany application. Much like epoxies, wide variances inurethanes exist in curing time, curing thickness andadhesion requirements.Material disposal is also be<strong>com</strong>ing an importantconsideration. Gone are the days when an old coatingcould simply be loaded up and dumped at the locallandfill. Now, issues pertaining to environmental risks,hazardous material permits and specialized disposalcosts are important considerations during the bidding process, becausemany of the older materials contained asbestos or other materials nowclassified as hazardous. The classifications bring new meaning to <strong>com</strong>pliancewith air quality standards and even safety equipment considerationsfor workers during the coatings removal process.The next problem is identifying and selecting a process that willmost effectively remove the surface coating. It’s fun to watch themget excited and go off on their own as business owners. Again, theproof is in the polish,” says Mark.www.superabrasive.<strong>com</strong>Beyond the SurfaceBecause surface-coating removal can involve many unknownvariables, it is impossible for one specific machine or process toaddress every problem. In fact, it is not un<strong>com</strong>mon for a number ofdifferent surface preparation machines to be used on the same job.The nature of surface preparation is very subjective. Many times, theanswers to surface preparation problems are not black and white, butdifferent shades of grey.Surface GrindersSurface grinding equipment has been in use for more than 40 years,with dual-head, counter-rotating units being the most popular. Theoriginal concept of surface grinding equipment was torepair damage caused by improper concrete placingtechniques or environmentally related factors. But assurface grinder use has be<strong>com</strong>e more popular, anumber of manufacturers have developed a greatervariety of attachments to increase their functions.For the last 30 years, the mostpopular attachment for surfacegrinders has been silicon carbideimpregnated grinding stones. Withstones ranging from six grit for roughgrinding to 180 grit for smoothgrinding, these have always been popular for grindingconcrete surfaces. However, the porosity of grindingstones allows them to clog very quickly, making themhighly unsuitable for most coatings-removal projects.Over the years, other attachments or processes weredeveloped specifically for surface coating removal. Ofthese, only two types of attachments have earned anexcellent track record.Surface <strong>Grinding</strong>: Diamond SystemsAbout 20 years ago, diamond-grinding systems were first developedas attachments for use with surface grinding equipment. It was soonrealized that the anti-clogging characteristics of diamonds made thisattachment ideal for quick and efficient surface coatings removal. Lategeneration diamond grinding systems are still an effective solution formany specialized coatings removal projects.While diamond hardness has been consistent, a wide variety ofmatrix materials and hardness values are used to control the finish wearrates. For example, a more abrasive coating may require the use of aharder matrix material to control segment wear rates.A diamond grinding system is favoured for removing many thinfilm coatings or those coatings with hardness values that preclude theuse of any other system. Some urethanes and even a wider varietyof epoxies fall into this category. Coatings with a thickness greaterthan 0.10 inch can normally be removed more quickly with otherattachment designs.How does a contractor know if a diamond grinding system is thesolution for a specific job application? The answer is to consult thevarious system manufacturers for their technical expertise. The generalrule is that a diamond grinding system will always remove a surfacecoating. Besides generally higher productivity rates, a diamond grindingsystem normally exhibits a long service life that can approach 4,600m 2for typical removal applications. The question then be<strong>com</strong>es a matterof production rates versus operating costs. Is there an alternative thatis even faster and less costly for the job? Depending on the specificapplication, there can be more productive alternatives.Surface <strong>Grinding</strong>: Tungsten CarbideProbably the most important attachments for coatings removal aretungsten carbide inserts. A <strong>com</strong>mon design feature of the systems currentlyon the market positions the insert at precise angles to the surface.During operation, the insert edge must first penetrate the coating andthen use a <strong>com</strong>bination of weight and relative movement to scrape thecoating away from the surface.Ideally, for longer service life, the tungsten carbide formulation shouldbe as hard as possible. But given real world conditions, hardness anddamage resistance must be properly balanced. Several factors governthe service life of the insert edge, but experience has shown a singleedge to be capable of delivering one to eight hours of use.The most important factor that limits the effectiveness of tungstencarbide insert systems is the coating itself. If the thickness will notallow the insert edge to properly penetrate the coating, productivityrates can be significantly reduced. If the hardness value of the coatingalso prevents the edge from properly penetrating, the scraping actionwill be reduced. The process is weight sensitive.Therefore, adding external weight to the surfacegrinder can substantially increase productivity rateswhen removing marginal materials. However, thevast majority of paints, material residues, epoxiesand urethanes can be quickly and easily removedwith the tungsten carbide insert system attached toa dual head surface grinder.How do you determine if such a system willwork for your project? The answer is to place theblunt edge of a standard file against the coating. Tiltthe file so that the blunt edge makes a 15° anglewith the surface and press down on the file handle andmove back and forth. If the blunt edge begins to remove the coating, thetungsten carbide insert system will probably be an effective solution.PlanersSometimes referred to as scarifiers, surface-planing equipment isnormally used to deliver a very destructive action against both verticaland horizontal surfaces. Sizes range from small handheld units to largeself-propelled machines. Their most <strong>com</strong>mon uses include removingtraffic lines, milling misaligned concrete slabs and preparing floors fortopcoat applications.ScabblersUse of pneumatically powered scabblers is normally reserved for removalof thick layers of concrete from floors and walls. Scabblers produce fast,effective results when removing base materials. The secret of using ascabbler for coatings removal is bit configuration <strong>com</strong>bined with reducedairflow and pressure rates, which work in unison to regulate piston speed,


impact energy and number of blows per minute. Theseparameters control the actual work performed by thetool. By controlling the impact force and movementfrequency, the destructive nature of the bit can also becontrolled. Determining the right <strong>com</strong>bination of airflowand pressure can remove coatings with surprisingly littledamage to the surface material.”The FutureDemolition contractors are faced with a growing number of challengesthat directly affect the bottom-line operation of business. As <strong>com</strong>petitionforces contractors to diversify services, being able to perform a widerange of surface preparation related tasks will be an important step inmeeting those tough business challenges for years to <strong>com</strong>e. Selectingthe proper machine and process involves accumulation of experience,skill and practical sense. Contractors areusing their existing equipment until it literally falls apart. Itis mostly consumables that are bought to keep the equipmentgoing. But some manufacturers are affected less than othersand one of those is Scanmaskin Sverige AB, based in Lindomeoutside Gothenburg, Sweden.Increased export“Of course we also sense the recession but in general we managerather well and better then we have expected. And now we feelthat business is taking off,” says <strong>com</strong>pany founder, part ownerand President Claes-Göran Bergstrand. “Our sales level is justover EUR 270,000 (US$408,000) per month, which I thinkis satisfactory and at a level where it should be.”It is mainly the increasing export activities that have contributedto the improvement. In recent years Scanmaskin hasstrengthened its presence in the European market by buildingup a strong network of distributors. Scanmaskin has distributorsin all German speaking countries as well as France, Benelux,Spain and Portugal. They also have their own subsidiaries inNorway and Finland as well as distributors in Denmark andthe Baltic states. About 70 % of the current sales <strong>com</strong>e fromthe Nordic region. The goal within the nextfew years is for exports outside the Nordiccountries to reach half of the total <strong>com</strong>panyturn over. Current the turn over is aboutEUR 5.6 M (US$ 8.2 M) but the goal is toreach above EUR 17.5 M (US$ 26.1 M) by20<strong>12</strong>. With the same sales speed as of todaythey have very good chances to reach theirgoals in 20<strong>12</strong>.“But we need to strengthen our exportoutside EU to reach our goals andwe are getting there slowly. Today we sendmachines through our own distributors inthe US, Australia and New Zealand. We alsohave directly to other markets like countriesin the Middle East,” says Marketing ManagerPaulo Bergstrand, who is also part owner ofthe <strong>com</strong>pany.In Australia they recently set up a co-operation agreementwith Traxx Construction Products, headed by Lloyd Williams.Traxx is a new <strong>com</strong>pany but the people behind it have beenworking with the professional concrete sawing and drilling,demolition and floor grinding industries for decades. “Traxxis very aggressive with their sales and we have good hope forAustralian sales in particular,” adds Paulo.The cogwheel is an important partof the patented drive system “PowerDrive” from Scanmaskin.From the left Claes-Göran Bergstrand, Paulo Bergstrand andMartin Persson with the latest development Scan Combiflex500 PD.“Epoxy still dominates”Scanmaskin is not putting on the brakes during the recession.Instead it is full speed ahead and a sign of that is the new headoffice and manufacturing facilities. The new plant is aboutsome 2,000 m 2 , with 1,600 m 2 making up the new productionarea and the rest offices for marketing and administration.The new premise in Lindome has 20 employees. Theactivity is divided between the two <strong>com</strong>panies Scanmineral andScanmaskin. Scanmineral manufactures filler <strong>com</strong>ponents likeepoxy to joint free industry floors. Scanmaskin develops andmanufactures machinery, equipment and tools for grindingand polishing of concrete floors. The current turn over of EUR5.6 M (US$ 8.2 M) is divided about 50/50 between the two<strong>com</strong>panies, but Scanmaskin grows faster. But still joint freeepoxy floors are a strong market and dominating. Polished concrete floors are quickly gaining ground andthey believe that the relation will be 60/40 in a few years.The business in Scanmineral is still very important and alot of floor grinders are sold for floor preparation and removalof glue and epoxy to make new epoxy floors. The environmentalaspect has long been a big issue in terms of epoxy floors as thistype of floor contains a lot of chemicals. Today several new typesof more environmentally friendly coatings are available.Products with “Power Drive”It was in 2003 that Scanmaskin started manufacturing itsown floor grinders. Until 2003 Scanmaskin sold the Dutchtrademark Diamatic, which is now owned by Blastrac, inSweden. But today the range only contains Scanmaskin’s ownassortment of eight different models. The smallest is the edgegrinder Scan Combiflex 180 EG followed by the floor grindersScan Combiflex 270S, Scan Combiflex 45, Scan Combiflex500 PD, Scan Combiflex 500i, Scan Combiflex 650 and ScanCombiflex 700 RC. Scan Combiflex 700 RC is the biggestmodel with three grinding heads and a grinding width of 700mm. It can be equipped with a remote control and manoeuvredwith either radio control or cable. The big news is the new ScanCombiflex 500 PD. PD stands for “Power Drive” which is apatented technical solution for the drive of the grinding headsthat optimizes the use of the machine up to 90 to 95%. Thestraps that pull the grinding heads have been replaced with acogwheel. The Power Drive function is available for grindingconcrete and stone.“Power Drive gives the machine much more power, itbe<strong>com</strong>es more stable, and the operation is softer and even asthe problems with skidding straps are eliminated. The strapsand the fact that they are skidding often reducers the impactof the machine as available power is maybe only up to 75 to80%. We have had the cogwheel on our 650 and 700 modelsbefore but now it is standard even on the 500,” says ScanmaskinTechnical Designer Martin Persson.Another new machine is Scan Combiflex 650 built fortough treatment and grinding of large areas. It incorporatesseveral characteristics that makeit safer for operators. The 650is also available with differentoptions. A water hose can beconnected or a special water tankinstalled for the access of waterduring wet grinding.Satisfied customersThe goals for Scanmaskin will beachieved by releasing a numberof new models in the years ahead.Several new products are in thepipeline and a new large machinewill be released during 2010.Focus is on floor preparation ofconcrete and terrazzo floors aswell as wood. But Scanmaskinalso wants to develop the conceptfor polished concrete floors theycall Glossy <strong>Floor</strong>s.Scanmaskin has a variety of clients, which are generalflooring <strong>com</strong>panies, light demolition, renovation and concretecutting contractors as well as the rental industry. Oneof these is the flooring <strong>com</strong>pany JIGAB based in Jönköping,Sweden. JIGAB used the Scan Combiflex 700 RC to grind anasphalt surface that had to be replaced with an epoxy floor.JIGAB has several Scanmaskin models and is very satisfiedwith the brand. “I think the remotely controlled 700 RCworks great. Like most machine and equipment sectors within theconstruction industry hydraulic, pneumatic and petroldriven breakers have suffered badly during 2009.Serious drop in 2009The downturn appears to have <strong>com</strong>e to a halt, but saleswill remain on the same low level throughout 2010 andwill slightly increase in 2011 and 20<strong>12</strong>. Companies PDicontacted believe there will be a dramatic drop this yearand could end up half the size of figures achieved in 2008.With so many small breaker manufacturers in Asia it ishard to estimate total sales of breakers, but could be nearthe 40,000 mark and about half of sales in 2008.Contractors have less work so their lower in<strong>com</strong>e haslead to far fewer purchases of new equipment. However,many contractors are in need of updating and renewingtheir machine and tool fleets, but instead they are repairingand maintaining their old equipment while replacementis put on hold.Activity beats the crisisThe downturn will probably lead to fewer suppliersand the weakest will probably try to offer products atlower prices and this will have a negative impact on themarket. Those bigger suppliers with power, strength andare prepared for the downturn will survive. They will usethe downturn as an opportunity to boost their market positionsand possibly lead to increased market shares. Thisis the time for continuous product development andreleases of new products. But this cannot bedone unless suppliers prepare for thegood times a head. The key isto maintain market appearance in a downturn and evenmore so than in the good times. Only a few suppliers reallyfollow this principle and will have a very good chanceto <strong>com</strong>e out even stronger after the recession. It isheartening to see that many breaker manufacturersare practicing this philosophy.Atlas Copco attacksAtlas Copco is a very good example of a manufacturer thatis attacking the market and has released several new productsduring the last <strong>12</strong> months. The <strong>com</strong>pany has addedthe SB 452 breaker, the seventh model in its solid bodylight breaker range. The SB 452, for use with excavators upto 13t, offers the highest performance and breaking powerin its class thanks to a new hydraulic system that delivershigher efficiency and improved energy recovery.New since July this year is the MB 750 hydraulicbreaker with reduced lifecycle cost and up to 54 % morepercussive performance. Two thirds of the life cycle costof a breaker is made up by factors as operator cost, energyand fuel consumption, as well as service and maintenancecost. To reduce the life cycle cost of machinery and tools isa major market demand and Atlas Copco´s latest additionto the medium breaker range, the MB 750, matches thischallenge and with more percussive performance <strong>com</strong>paredto its predecessors.More percussive power does not mean that the breakeradds extra weight to the carrier. Thus, the MB 750 allowsthe use of a smaller breaker and carrier for the same kind ofjob. This helps to bring the investment cost to a lower leveland reduce the fuel consumption significantly. “It ran great”Newly launched in theUS, Husqvarna’s firstdemolition machine,the DXR 310, has alreadyhad the chanceto prove itself. Therobot recently demolishedthe foundationsof two large industrykilns at a paper manufacturing<strong>com</strong>pany inGeorgia, USA.The US demolition contractor Bluegrass is one of the biggestin the American demolition industry. As a controlleddemolition contractor for nearly 30 years, the <strong>com</strong>panyhas extensive concrete cutting and breaking experiencefrom a variety of industrial demolition projects. Bluegrassuses a majority of demolition machines and has a largenumber of robots in its fleet. For the task of refurbishingthe foundation in two large industry kilns at a papermanufacturing <strong>com</strong>pany, they chose to work with Husqvarna’snew DXR 310. The mission involved removinglime powder build up, castable and bricklining from the 70m long kilns.The DXR 310 was lifted to the thirdfloor of the building, where the kilnswere located. The robot set to work intemperatures over 45°C inside the kilns.The robot first removed lime build upthroughout the length of the kiln. After that,8m of castable from each kiln plus the three layersof bricks at the entrances was knocked down. Atlas Copco involvedin German City TunnelFive Atlas Copco attachments are involved in theconstruction of the 4km long Leipzig City Tunnelthat will provide a north-south link through thecity. Four new stations will join the city to thesurrounding countryside and the road and busnetwork. New stops will provide access to shoppingfacilities, university and places of culturalinterest, as well as in the central station.Contractor Kafril GmbH based in Großzschepa,about 40km east of Leipzig,is demolishingtemporary structures, built below the LeipzigMarket Square in the Bayerischer Bahnhof stationand central station, for the main tunnellingoperation. The <strong>com</strong>pany used two HB <strong>25</strong>00and one HB 2200 Atlas Copco breakers. The pumps are often built in to special PowerPack containers equipped for hydrodemolition purposes.But the actual machines for hydrodemolition jobs aredeveloped and manufactured by the hydrodemolitionproducers. It is also <strong>com</strong>mon for contractors to tailor-maketheir own equipment.Two dominant manufacturersAlthough Conjet and Aquajet Systems are the two mainmanufacturers there have been few new developmentsuntil just recently.Aquajet Systems in Holsbybrunn in the south ofSweden announced a number of new products, whichwere introduced at a press meeting in Stockholm at thebeginning of the year. A number of new developments havebeen incorporated which can be summarised in the EqualDistance System, Intelligent Sensing Control, GraphicColour Display and the new and large hydrodemolitionrobot MAX Hybrid as well as the new environmentallyfriendly power pack ECOSILENCE.Conjet and Aquajet Systems operate differently. Conjethave had the widest range of machines while AquajetSystems has focused on a few base models that can beequipped with a number of attachments. But this situationis slowly changing with increasing number of attachmentsfrom Conjet and additional standard models from AquajetSystems and even more attachments.The Conjet range and new productsConjet currently has four base models, which are the Robot324 replacing the 322, Robot 364 STD, Robot 365MPA and the diesel driven unit Robot 432 D. Conjet alsomanufacturers a number of jetframes.Since Conjet Robot 322 was introduced in 1999 ithas be<strong>com</strong>e Conjet’s best selling robot and it has graduallybeen improved. Now some significant improvements havebeen made and the machine renamed Robot 324. The Aquajet Systems modelsare available in different versions as standard andEvolution. Evolution means increased technicalcontent like a higher level of <strong>com</strong>puterisedcontrol and operational functions. HD/HE canbe fitted with a Robot Arm suitable for confinedspaces like narrow tunnels. The HVD/HVE models are based on a towerprinciple, which increases the reachradically and is perfect for largescale projects where long reach isneeded. It is also suitable forpillar renovation by using aspecial pillar hydrodemolitionoption.After 18 months of development work AquajetSystems is taking an important step further by introducinga number of improvements including the newequal distance system.Latest version of EvolutionThe new Evolution concept adds a lot of new advantagesto the hydrodemolition technique. For instanceit is now possible to use the method according to aspecial geometrical pattern. The result is better and more efficienthydrodemolition. EDS is patented and is today standardon all robots and frames from Aquajet Systems. Anothernew function is the Intelligent Sensing Control system,which means that all electric sensors and cables have beenmoved away from the front of the robot where most of thewater and slurry accumulates. All electric parts have beenplaced in a safe location on the robot in order to minimizeelectric disturbance of the steering system. ISC reducessignificantly all breakdowns and search for malfunctions,which increases the efficiency. Also ISC is a standardfunction and is patented. There is also the new graphicalscreen TFT that is part of the new control box EvolutionController that was launched some time ago.The hybrid robot from Aquajet SystemsAquajet System has also extended its range with the newhydrodemolition robot Aquacutter Max Hybrid. Themodel was originally tailor made for a client and can runon both diesel and electricity by just switching a button.The model is 20% larger then the standard robots in therange and can work up to 10 m vertically and above.Aquacutter Max Hybrid is also equipped with the functionsEDS and ISC. During last year Aquajet Systems alsolaunched a new type of environmentally friendly powerpack named Ecosilence. The power pack contains a lowemission diesel and the container is vibration and soundisolated. It lowers noise by about 50% and was developedfor use in sensitive areas like inner city locations. The new 77.5 km San Jose – Calderahighway will be used by more than 81,000 vehicles/day, reducingthe travel time between the Central Valley and the Central PacificCoast by at least 30 minutes.It is the country’s first public construction project to be awardedto a foreign contractor by the Consejo Nacional de Concessions, partof the Ministero de Obras Publicas y Transportes. Spain’s Autopistasdel Sol will finance the project recouping its investment through tollcharges over <strong>25</strong> years. Conjet assists in ChannelTunnel repairsTrain services through the Channel Tunnel linking Britain and France,where scheduled to be fully restored in February 2009 followingseveral months of repairs after a major fire in the tunnel on 11September 2008. A lorry caught fire on a Shuttle train carryingheavy goods vehicles bound for France through the 50km longnorthern tunnel. The fire, which spread to other vehicles, raged forabout 16 hours. The extreme temperatures of upto 1000ºC caused extensive damage to about600m of the 7.6m diameter tunnel’s concretelining, approximately 11km in from the Frenchentrance.Conjet supplied specially modifiedbanana shaped feedbeams, whichcarry the jetting nozzle, to matchthe curvature of the tunnel wall(right).Removal of firedamaged concreteThe Channel Tunnel operator Eurotunnelawarded the repair contract, estimated tobe between EUR 50-60M, to a consortiumof Freyssinet, Eurovia Travaux Ferroviairesand Vinci Energies. Freyssinet was appointed to look after the civilengineering works, while ETF would be responsible for track andoverhead wire restoration and Vinci Energies responsible for otherequipment. The technique of hydrodemolition, which uses highpressurewater jets to remove concrete from various structures,was specified as the method to remove the fire damaged concrete.Freyssinet subcontracted the concrete removal to the specialist hydrodemolitionand industrial cleaning contractor Philip Lasserat.For the hydrodemolition part of the repair Philippe Lassarathired four Conjet hydrodemolition Robots and pumps, togetherwith a team of experienced operators and a project manager, fromRotterdam based Doornbos Equipment, a specialist in the rental ofultra high-pressure water jetting and vacuum equipment. To meetthe tight schedule Doornbos had to work three shifts round the clockand opted to use two Conjet 364s and two Conjet 322s. We removed all the fire damagedconcrete in 14 working days using four Robots. We had to worknon-stop round the clock in three 10 hours shifts, which includedan hour in and an hour out at shift change to get through all thesecurity.” The Robots were supported by 350kW and 400kWpumps operating at pressures up to 1000bar and flow of up to240litres/min.After the removal of the damaged concrete Philippe Lassaratfollowed on repairing and replacing any fire damaged reinforcingprior to spraying on the new concrete lining. The various servicesand utilities were then replaced before handing the tunnel backto Eurotunnel to restart a full service of the Shuttle trains on 10February. Eurostar, the <strong>com</strong>pany that operates the passenger trainsrunning through the tunnel, anticipated services would be fullyrestored on 23 February.www.conjet.<strong>com</strong>three main sections with two incorporating existing roads and numerousbridges required upgrading to meet the new regulations and increasedtraffic volume. Main contractor Constructora San José Caldera SArecognised the advantages of using hydrodemolition on at least 10bridges and appointed Hidrodem as sub contractor, using two AquajetSystems Aqua Cutter robots.All bridge slabs will be strengthened and increased in thickness toaccept the increased traffic densities. The Aquajet Cutter robots came intotheir own on the concrete slab improvements and reinforcement, removingmore than 800 m 2 of concrete to an average depth of 100 mm. Onthe Rio Jesus Maria Bridge Hidrodem found that the concrete slab wasbelow the minimum standard thickness of 150 mm. Hidrodem was ableto use the Aquajet robots with confidence to remove the concrete withoutdamaging the rebar, allowing concrete to be poured to a new standardthickness of 170mm. This together with the increased rebar provided atotal thickness of 220mm to meet the new standard.By using a high-pressure jet of water, the Aqua Cutter robotremoves concrete without causing any damage to the structure orreinforcement bars. Each robot is fed by two water pumps, rated at550 hp and 700 hp respectively and delivering 196 - 227 l/min ata pressure of 1000 bar. Swedish dam relies on hydrodemolitiontechniques during refurbishmentHydrodemolition techniques are being used for therefurbishment of Sweden’s Järpströmmen hydroelectricpower station dam wall and three spillway gatesusing Aquajet’s Aqua Cutter robotic hydrodemolitionequipment.Swedish hydrodemolition specialist E-Schaktis working on the refurbishment contract, 80 kmwest of Östersund, mid-Sweden; to meet increasedwater volumes.Power station operator Fortum has awarded a twoyear contract to Skanska for the <strong>com</strong>plete refurbishmentof the dam. The power station was built in 1944and has three 118 MW turbines providing 415 GWh/year of electricity for the national grid.E-Schakt was awarded a sub-contract for thehydrodemolition removal of damaged concrete. Afterremoval Skanska will then replace the treated areaswith new concrete.Hydrodemolition ensures rebar is not damage,minimises risk of removing good concrete, eliminatesdust and crystalline silica pollution and leaves asuperior bonding surface for new concrete. SAIE Down butStill StandingIt is difficult fororganizers ofconstruction machineryequipment showsin these difficult times.SAIE 2009 in Italy inOctober was a majordisappointment thisyear as a result of aweak market and acollision with othershows in the samebusiness segment.The Italian show SAIE in Bologna did not meet expectationsthis year. The normally vibrant exhibitionwas devoid of many of the major manufacturers ofdemolition and recycling equipment.Show collisionJust a handful of manufacturers of demolition andrecycling equipment that exhibited at previous SAIEshows attended this year. The recession has hit theItalian market hard and is one of the main reasonsfor the decline in exhibitors at SAIE. Another reasonis the rather unlucky planning of having threesimilar shows so close together. SAIE was heldon 28-31 October and coincided with the wastemanagement and recycling show E<strong>com</strong>ondo inRimini, about an hour drive from Bologna. As thestation hall is a listed building, the contractors had to stick to thespecial building regulations set by the state office for historicalmonuments Bundesdenkmalamt.Double shiftsDimas/GWA removed about 1,300 m 3 of concrete by wiresawing and carried out about 1,500 m of core drilling for wiresawing preparation. The main demolition was done within a 4month period and with a tight programme Dimas/GWA oftenworked night and weekend shifts.Wire sawing most efficientThe most intensive task was the wire sawing, which was donewith EDT Eurodima wire saws. The positioning also meant thatall equipment and the concrete waste hadto be transported through live sections ofthe works.”D-Drill bites into concretebiscuit at chocolate factoryIn the UK and on the fourth floor of a chocolatefactory in Chester, D-Drill (Master Drillers) Limitedgot to work cutting out concrete sections for contractorsBarry Callebaut Manufacturing UK Ltd.The job consisted of four 1850mm diameterx 275mm deep heavily reinforced concrete biscuitshaped sections, each weighing slightly morethan the average chocolate treat at 1.65 t.Callebaut appointed the diamond drillingand sawing specialist because of the difficultaccess and control issues that are faced whendealing with food production line areas. “Theteam dismissed breaking out by mechanicalmeans because of the obvious dust and debristhat would result from this method,” says D-DrillNorth West Area Manager, Neil Wood. “Withaccess via a staircase plus demanding liftingcapacities, a small goods hoist was also notadvised. Our solution was to erect a suitablecrash deck below the works area, which wasthen tented and bounded off to contain anywater ingress below. The sub layer is <strong>com</strong>posed of mixedgravels, sand and lime, and must be cut dry. Thecut is then air cleaned and filled with tar. Record time demolitionof famous Mumbaiflyover by Atlas CopcoCombiCuttersIn the Indian capital Mumbai the two lane Lalbaug flyover,which carries 15,000 vehicles an hour, had be<strong>com</strong>e verycongested and had to be demolished to make way for a new2.1km long structure. The state government allowed only<strong>25</strong> days for the entire demolition works and clearance ofdebris, but only 10 days for the basic demolition.Contractor Simplex Infrastructure Ltd sub-contractedthe demanding demolition to Matte & Associates, whichopted to use its Atlas Copco silent demolition tools. Downwell Demolition bringsflyover down to earthThe UK demolition contractor Downwell Demolition has recently<strong>com</strong>pleted a six week project demolishing the Sir John Hawkinsflyover in Chatham. Kent. The flyover’s demolition is part of a majorredevelopment of the town centre, which includes the building of anew bus station and expansion of the Pentagon shopping centre. Fordecades the 130 m long concrete bridge had stood un<strong>com</strong>fortablybetween Chatham’s shops and houses. The flyover consisted ofeight spans and support pillars up to 6m high.Downwell Demolition initially secured the site and then removedthe central span of the bridge, which ran above Chatham’s HighStreet. This involved the temporary closure of the main roadwhilst specialist machinery demolished the span and removed allconcrete and steel arisings. To minimise inconvenience to localresidents and workers this part of the project was <strong>com</strong>pleted overa single weekend.With the central span safely demolished, and the High Streetreopened, the remaining five spans and their associated supportingcolumns were then demolished and removed. Throughout theproject, all demolition and crushing work was subject to waterbased dust suppression and undertaken at pre-determined timesto minimise disruption to the local <strong>com</strong>munity. Material arisingswere segregated with the concrete crushed on site and the steelrebar removed for recycling. Brokk brings dowBrokk 400 remotelyoperated demolitionrobots have been playinga key role assistingat one of Scandinavia’slargest demolitionprojects. The majorNorwegian demolitioncontractor Veolia MiljøEntreprenør is using theBrokks at Ahus Universityhospital in theNorwegian capital Oslo.The Ahus University Hospital demolition projectinvolved the demolition of the low and high blocks, intwo separate contracts worth a total of NOK 75 million.Veolia Miljø Entreprenør won both contracts and beganwork in autumn 2008.Nine building to <strong>com</strong>e downThe low blocks consisted of six consecutive buildingsfrom two to eight floors, covering a total of 22,000 m 2 offloor area for high demolition. The taller blocks consistedof three buildings of <strong>12</strong>-13 floors and floor area of 18,000m 2 . “Institute GoesThe Institute of DemolitionEngineersrecently hosted thelatest of its industryseminars; and it wasa truly internationalaffair, PDi’s Mark Anthonyreports.It’s a little over two years since Terry Quarmby, then the vicepresidentof the Institute of Demolition Engineers, stood beforethe European Demolition Association members in Bilbao toinvite them to apply for IDE membership. Membership,claimed Quarmby at the time, was the only internationallyrecognised accreditation and qualification open to true demolitionengineers.Growing ReputationSince then, the international response has been one of almostdeafening silence. Save for a handful of memberships in theUS, Australia and elsewhere in Europe, the IDE seems to havebeen consigned to a parochial backwater, damned for all eternityas too British for international tastes.What a difference two years and a new president and vicepresidentcan make. Often working at great heights,Mende has developed a unique system of deconstruction usinga “spider-mounted” mini excavator equipped with a hydraulichammer that gradually eats away the chimney from the topdown. Cremer reports that his <strong>com</strong>pany’s process ensures thatall debris falls into the chimney, facilitating easier clean-up andrecycling and ensuring that dust emissions are minimised. Although they could be a year or more away,these new models could weigh in excess of 50 t and will requirea truly huge carrier to support them.The final presentation of the day was by ControlledDemolition’s Dick Green who maintained the internationalflavour by sharing his story of the explosive demolition of apower station chimney in India. Howeverin only a month,Stockton, Californiabased contractorW.C. Maloney demolishedthe 3,400m 2Central Plant andrecycled 94% of thematerials.Text & Photo: Erik PisorInitial demolition work involved the removal of the plant’seast elevation and non-load bearing curtain wall by a LinkBelt 330 excavator, equipped with a bucket and thumb, anda Liebherr 934 Excavator with Genesis Shear. This workallowed the excavators access to the facility’s control room,where six large chillers were salvaged, two large boilers weredemolished in place, and electrical switchgear and motorswere removed.Complex city centre demolitionBecause downtown streets bounded the facility, specific truckroutes were required when hauling away large chillers andconstruction debris during the day. Additionally, to avoidtraffic delays the loading and unloading of heavy constructionequipment occurred at night.Working in a downtown environment also meant contractor<strong>com</strong>pliance with dust control requirements, whichwas ac<strong>com</strong>plished utilizing 18m and 24m boom lifts and awater truck.Following the removal of control room equipment, theroof, floors, walls, metal and other materials, were demolishedfrom the middle of the building outwards, with mainly columnsand the plant’s concrete foundation remaining.Responsible for the majority of this demolition wasthe Link Belt 330 Excavator, which demolished walls andfloors, while also loading trucks with construction debris.The Liebherr 934 excavator used its shear attachment to cutand remove pieces of the roof, while a small Bobcat S300was also utilized.“Tight demolition”During this portion of demolition, W.C. Maloney had tocope with working very close to the new Central Plant. “Theold plant was demolished very close to the new building,” saidJ.B. Hall, project executive for Skanska USA Building Inc.,the general contractor for the Central Plant project. “We wereabout 1.5m away from the new plant the whole time.”To avoid damaging the new plant theveranda of the old facility was cut back leavingonly the columns, some of which were nearlytouching the new facility. “We had to shearthe columns at their bottoms and pull themaway from the new building,” said Hall.One monthdemolition scheduleDuring concrete and foundation demolition,a Link Belt 330 excavator and aLink Belt 460 excavator equipped withhydraulic breakers were used to break upconcrete. In addition a John Deere excavatorwith a concrete processor crushed theconcrete, while removing the rebar.In total 8,000 t of concrete, 1,200t of metal and 600 t of constructiondebris were demolished and taken tolocal recycling facilities.Demolition could only take onemonth and planning was key to theproject’s success. “The schedule waschallenging,” said Hall. “We were pre-62 PDi • Is s u e 4 - 2009 • Oc t - No v

The boys areback in townAfter an absence of eight years,the NFDC Annual Conventionreturned to Killarney in SouthernIreland for what felt like anoverdue home<strong>com</strong>ing.PDi’s Mark Anthony reports.On paper, the latest Convention of the NFDC had allthe makings of a damp squib. Having thanked delegatesfor the UK’s ongoing support for military actionin Iraq and Afghanistan and accepting US responsibilityfor the global credit crunch, Taylor went on to explainthat while US President Obama’s stimulus package hadyet to percolate down to Stateside demolition contractors,there were growing signs of positivity. The numberof entries submitted for a ‘first-time’ event was astounding, making thejudging panel’s deliberations particularly challenging. However, duringthe judging meeting held in Amsterdam in early September there waslittle dissension concerning the determination of the winners of thevarious categories.Despite the fact that discussions over several of the categorieswere spirited, the final determinations were unanimous.
