The twin factors of leadership and exposure time to combat were also criticallyimportant for <strong>the</strong> 9th Battalion. It has been argued that when <strong>the</strong> battalion’s firstdifficulties began Mat<strong>the</strong>ws was out of touch with <strong>the</strong> conditions his troops wereexperiencing. It has also been suggested that D Company’s collective refusal tocontinue on 31 January was a ‘wake-up’ call for <strong>the</strong> CO and that he subsequentlymodified his approach and paid closer attention to <strong>the</strong> needs of his troops.219These observations are supported by <strong>the</strong> instances related above, where Mat<strong>the</strong>wsresisted pressure from his superiors to interfere with <strong>the</strong> men’s rest during <strong>the</strong>battalion’s break from operations and his willingness to modify tasking whenrequired. Perhaps, however, <strong>the</strong>y also say something about Mat<strong>the</strong>ws’s ownintrinsic motivation. Unlike Dexter he was not war weary. In March, whenMat<strong>the</strong>ws recorded news of his bro<strong>the</strong>r’s death in a POW camp, he wrote: ‘Thereare men in this unit who do not want to fight and plenty in Australia. I feel moredetermined than ever now’.220 Tod Schacht, a private in <strong>the</strong> 9th Battalion, writingabout <strong>the</strong> morale problems in February, noted:Colonel Mat<strong>the</strong>ws, who was a big, strong man, and very much a bold, ambitious<strong>Australian</strong> soldier, was faced with growing and conflicting opposition to his aggressiveleadership. His superiors were not without <strong>the</strong> desire to seek a piece of glory in militaryhistory … There seems to have been constant pressure for aggressive advances, with <strong>the</strong>chance for our leader to gain distinction for himself.221Mat<strong>the</strong>ws had not seen action since early 1943 and, given his reaction to Field’ssuggestion that he might earn a decoration if he ‘kept up <strong>the</strong> good work’, it is notdifficult to surmise that he was highly motivated to prove himself as a battalioncommander. While this motivation was initially a cause of <strong>the</strong> unit’s difficulties, italso provided <strong>the</strong> strength Mat<strong>the</strong>ws needed to coax <strong>the</strong> 9th through its problemsand he eventually did receive a DSO.222The fact that <strong>the</strong>se problems manifested <strong>the</strong>mselves so early demonstrated thatunder <strong>the</strong> right conditions battle exhaustion could develop rapidly.
