Rector UMT presides over meeting of ILM Scholarship FundRector UMT Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad presided over meeting of the ILM Scholarship Fund.Various measures to facilitate deserving students in acquiring higher education at UMT were discussedin the meeting. It was acknowledged that the challenge for UMT is to maintain its status asone of the premier higher education institutions in Pakistan and yet avoid falling into the trap ofturning into a purely commercial venture. UMT has successfully maintained its reputation so farbut maintaining such standards consumes the major part of our financial resources. This also restricts efforts togive scholarships to all deserving students fulfilling the merit criteria. The University urgently requires sufficientfunds to continue its tradition of providing quality education to the deserving. The ILM Scholarship Fund hasbeen set up for this specific purpose. Affluent members of society, philanthropists and UMT alumni who wish tobe a part of this nation building effort are encouraged to contribute to the ILM Scholarship Fund generously.Dr Munawar A Anees delivers Iqbal MemorialLecture 2012 at Punjab UniversityThe University of the Punjab, Lahore, invited DrMunawar A Anees, Director, Institute of IslamicBanking and Center for Global Dialogue at UMT, to deliverthe Annual Iqbal Memorial Lecture 2012. The lecture,titled “The Muslim Intellect: Triumph andTragedy”, was held on July 5, 2012 at the Center forUndergraduate Studies, Al Raazi Hall, under the auspicesof the Department of Philosophy, and presidedover by Dr Mujahid Kamran, Vice Chancellor PU.“The Muslim civilization stands at a crossroads, deprivedof its identity and vision.” Prof Munawar Aneessaid on the occasion. He added, “As Muslims we do nothave a sound understanding of our faith. Even the earlydiscourse on speculative theology is absent from our circles.”Dr Anees added that we are engulfed in seeminglyendless wars of rhetoric and anger among ourselvesand against the West. He said that orthodoxy haswon over reason and rationalism and skepticism and individualismhas been 'mercilessly sacrificed' at the altarof a totalitarian puritanism. He said that the nation wassuffocating on account of loss of pluralism and progressivethought, which was the distinctive trait of theMuslims in the past. Iqbal's idea of free will, equatedwith khudi and talem, was a substratum for evolutionaryepistemology and was already making inroads intothe modern Muslim scholarship. Dr Anees said that DrMuahhmad Rafi-ud-Din, undoubtedly the greatestIqbal scholar, was an ardent proponent of Iqbal's philosophy.He said that the challenge of post scientific soci-ety was that of reasserting a spiritual identity. He addedthat cultural relativism and plurality as vindicated bypostmodernism put an even higher premium on soulsearching by Muslims. He said the answer lies not inholding fast to the paling phantom of scientific fundamentalismbut in carving new cognitive niches withoutlosing touch with substantive knowledge.Dr Qalb-e-Abid, Dean, Arts and Humanities, DrAbdul Hafeez, Chairman, Department of Philosophy,Dr Absar Ahmad, Honorary Director, QuranAcademy, faculty members and a large number of studentswere present on the occasion. UMT students Shahzad Ali, Ahmad Adnan, Hashim Ali Akram, Waqas Kamal and Center forEntrepreneurship and Innovation (CENTIN) Project Coordinator Sundus Nazir Soleri comprise the winningteam that earned this distinction for UMT.Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad, Rector UMT, congratulated Rashid Hussain, Director CENTIN, and the business ideacompetition team on their achievement, and invited them for a special meeting in his office.The winning entrepreneurial project is a multipurpose pouch designed by the students for charging digital devices;first, mobile phones, then diversified into extended product lines like laptops, digital cameras, etc. Theframe of the pouch is being equipped with highly sensitive panel cells that not only charge the cell phone with sunlight,but also with florescent light, and very little daylight.The commercial potential of the productis huge. Practitioners and educationists discuss indigenousmodels of inclusive education at UMTLeading educationists, special education experts, practitioners,faculty members and students attended a seminaron indigenous models of inclusive education organizedby UMT at its campus on May 9, 2012. The seminarwas initiated by the Department of Special NeedsEducation, School of Social Sciences and Humanities.Dr Abdul Tawab, Honorary CEO, Rising Sun Institute,said that the Institute is working actively to promotecommunity awareness. A comprehensive training programfor teachers has been developed. The Institute hasconducted 17 courses, trained 490 teachers, and plans toexpand and start other projects in the Punjab as well. Hesaid that only 30,000 people have access to some form ofspecial education institute in Punjab while the need ismuch greater.Justice (R) Amir Raza, President Pakistan Society forMentally Retarded Children, said that one percent childrenare disabled in Pakistan. The real challenge is to activate ownershipof special education in governmental and societalsectors. He added that inclusive education is themost effective way to improve school performance. He assured UMT students that no extraordinarybrilliance is required for making a mark inthe field of computer science. This is a field that doesnot require any special natural skill. The emergence ofcomputer science is a great blessing for developingcountries because people with average intelligencecan survive in the field and make good money. He advisedthe students to maintain good GPA during theirstudies but concentrate more on developing expertisein what they know. Ali apprised everyone that inPakistan there are two major career paths for computerscience graduates: they may become core programmersor testers. However, core programmers enjoymore prestige and financial benefits than testers.Other fields for computer science graduates include researchand program management. He concluded bysaying that computer science gives great respect tothose who pursue it vigorously. The minimum core criteriafor hiring in any company involves problem solvingskills, efforts aimed at reaching solutions and makingthose solutions more efficient.At the end, a question and answer session was held.Students asked a wide range of questions rangingfrom hiring processes at Microsoft to the relevance ofcomputer science courses to current industry practices.Ali answered all queries in a comprehensivemanner and encouraged students to give their best tothis field. DITC organizes Third Annual Seerat ConferenceThe Department of Islamic Thought and Civilization (DITC) organized its third annual Seerat Conference on thetopic of “Love of Holy Prophet SAW is part of our faith (Iman)” on April 03, 2012 at UMT campus. A notable featureof this year's conference was announcement of winners of English and Urdu essay competitions on the sametopic.Delivering the keynote address, Dr Muhammad Saad Siddiqui, Associate Professor, University of Punjab,quoted many precedents from history and from Arabic Grammar on the topic in an eloquent manner. He differentiatedbetween love (Hubb) and obedience (Ta'at). While elaborating various examples from the Quranic Arabicand ancient Arabic language, he affirmed that we as Muslims have no option other than to love the Holy ProphetSAW. There is no other way to have Allah's love except through loving his Prophet SAW. At many places in theQur'an, Allah has ordained us to love His beloved Prophet SAW and has declared Iman incomplete without thislove. He also said that this love is not part of our Iman. In fact, our Iman cannot originate without love of the HolyProphet SAW.Dr Fareed Ahmad Paracha presided over the conference. In his oratorical spirit, he quoted incidents from thelives of Companions of the Holy Prophet SAW to support the conference theme. Journalists invited at UMT to discuss roleof media in present timesRenowned journalists and educationists gathered atthe UMT Campus to reflect on and discuss issues,problems and reformative measures being adopted bythe media. The main objective of the seminar was to understandthe current situation and role of media organizationsand analyze whether media is playing negativeor positive role for the betterment of society andthe country as a whole. The seminar titled “The effectiverole of media in current situation” was organizedby the School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSS&H) at UMT on April 23, 2012. Sajjad Mir, Director newsand current affairs, NEWS ONE and famous columnwriter, was of the view that the media is presentingboth sides of the picture but television channels areshowing too much violence in programs and news;this creates tension and stress among the viewers. Thishas forced the public to switch over to other channelsthat do not depict such scenes. The seminar was attended by more than 30 supply chain professionalsfrom different organizations, SBE faculty members and supply chain students.This session was held to create awareness of custom models in Pakistan and its role on overall supply chain. The increasingthreat of international terrorism and organized cross-border crime requires the enhancement of existingborder and frontier controls and effective national and international co-operation between Customs, other law enforcementagencies and business. The greatest challenge for Customs will be to offer facilitated treatment of thevast majority of international cargo movements and passenger traffic, while identifying and dealing with thesmall percentage that pose a genuine risk to security. Time, quality information and good intelligence are the mostcritical elements in the application of efficient and effective Customs controls and risk management. Institutionalization of social research requiredto promote local communities ofsocial researchers: Dr Abdul HameedDr Abdul Hameed earned his PhD from The Ohio State University, ColumbusOhio, USA in 1988. While majoring in technology education, his other focuswas on special education and curriculum. His academic interests include philosophyof technology, educational change, critical theory, and contemporary researchparadigms and attitudes measurement. He received Professor's Awardon best academic performance at Ohio State University. A member of theNational Council of Social Sciences, gold medalist in MA Education fromUniversity of the Punjab, Dr Hameed has 27 years experience of universityteaching in various positions. He is well known in the field of research and dataanalysis. Dr Hameed has given more than 30 international presentationsacross eleven countries. He is an active member of various academic and professionalbodies both at national and international levels. He is playing a leadingrole in movement for social inclusion through inclusive education.Currently, serving as Dean, School ofSocial Sciences and Humanities, UMT News spoke to him on some of his achievements and the future of the socialsciences in an increasingly technology-driven world.UMT News: What is the role of the social scientist intoday's technology-driven world?Dr Hameed: Contrary to science, technology directlyinterfaces with individuals, families and social institutions.It has to be, therefore, acceptable to the socialcontext where it is produced and marketed. All technologicalinnovations must conform to the local values.Any deviation will lead to immediate rejection.However, the technological mega systems such as systemsof communication, manufacturing, construction,transportation, etc. continuously and invisibly shapethe ways people perceive themselves and the worldaround them. These systems, which are initially builtto serve humanity, eventually start forcing individualsto fit themselves to the system in order to benefitfrom it. The Internet and social media, for example,not only transform our lives but also continuouslyquestion our system of beliefs. This phenomenon constitutesthe core subject of study for a social scientist.Social scientists need to address these issues and comeup with solutions for a better social order. We shouldcarefully study the impact of technology as an object (alayman's view), as a process (technologist's view), asknowledge (academic view) and as volition (politicalview) so that the challenges can be addressed by creatinga collective wisdom and will.UMT News: What are the challenges facing academiain the social sciences?Dr Hameed: The content of social sciences is changingat alarming pace whereas the existing research paradigmsare becoming more and more outdated and irrelevant.There is need to institutionalize the social researchin order to promote the local communities of socialresearchers. The product of social research is noteasily marketable so there will be no buyer to invest.The social institutions under state control are the mainconsumers of social knowledge. It is, therefore, imperativethat the state should come forward to invest inthis sector. If we are reluctant to grow nurseries of socialresearch today, how can we expect social scientiststo provide sufficient knowledge base for the socialproblems of tomorrow. always remained in the hands of irrelevant people. Wehave certainly failed to produce quality social scientistsin sufficient number across its various disciplines.The result is chaos in our social order.UMT News: There is a widely prevalent view thatthere is a shortage of qualified academia to fulfill therequirements of the faculty. Do you agree with thisobservation?Dr Hameed: The dearth of social scientists is evidentby a large number of professionals trained in hard coresciences or professions who hold key positions in thesocial sector. Some of them become role models and establisha parallel career track for the youth. Severalmedical professionals have left health services andjoined the social sector. They may be performing commendableservices in the field but their contribution tosocial research is extremely limited. Moreover, it is agreat loss to public exchequer as they were trained foran expensive profession but could not sustain.Moreover, careers in social sciences unfortunatelycould not develop as attractive career paths. The academiain social sciences is no exception.UMT News: A recent Gallup poll revealed that 67%of our students opt for the hard core sciences whileonly 33% take up the arts or soft core social sciencesin their higher education. Most Pakistanis wanttheir children, especially sons, to become doctors, engineersor army men. How can this mindset bechanged?Dr Hameed: Jobs in the social sector, especially in topslots, are open to all qualifications. The bureaucratswho are simple graduates and generalists by theirtraining predominantly occupy these jobs. Unlessthese jobs are declared technical positions requiringspecific master's degree in the social sciences, they cannotbe a priority area of study for bright students. Inthe absence of meritorious students in these disciplines,the academic rigor is below international standards.Statistically speaking, the number of lucrativejobs in the social sciences is far greater than in hardcoresciences. Good governance is mainly a function ofgood quality social scientists in a country.UMT News: One of the major reasons for low turnoverof students who opt for social sciences has beenthe lack of lucrative employment opportunities inthe sector but this seems to be changing with the influxof foreign and local development bodies, consultancywork, NGOs and emphasis on policy anddevelopment. However, is this a sustainable trendand how can we ensure that young people who takeup sociology, history, anthropology or literature, forinstance, land respectable jobs?Dr Hameed: Both public and private sector universitiesdo not intend to heavily invest for the growth of socialsciences because of low return. There is a wide gapbetween the salary package of a professor in the socialsciences and the one who teaches hard-core sciences.The influx of foreign funding and an ever-growingbody of their functionaries can hardly replace a teamof academics of high caliber in social sciences who cansupervise research and development activities in ouruniversities. The development of human capital in adiscipline is the only key to sustainability.UMT News: HEC has taken a number of steps to promotequality education in social sciences and humanitiessuch as the establishment of SocialSciences and Humanities Research Council ofPakistan and a committee for Development of SocialSciences, Arts and Humanities. What substantivemeasures have been taken by these two bodies to promotethe social sciences sector?Dr Hameed: They are doing good work but all the measureswe have discussed above do not fall under theirjurisdiction. The budget allocations are more symbolicthan realistic. The social sciences are still being treatedlike a “second citizen” everywhere. These measureshave hardly changed the value and status of social sciencesin our country. A simple comparison of incentivesgiven for research and development in hard andsoft sciences can be an eye opener.UMT News: As Dean of the School of SocialSciences and Humanities at UMT, you have taken aspecial interest in setting up the Department ofSpecial Education and creating awareness in inclusiveeducation. Dr Hameed: I wish to help in making UMT a comprehensiveuniversity serving all shades and segments ofsociety. A social scientist must promote human diversitywithout classifying and labeling to exclude anygroup of individuals. The seeds of social inclusion arefirst sowed in universities by accommodating all humansirrespective of their apparent differences.Moreover, Pakistan has recently ratified theConvention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.We simply wish to implement it.UMT News: What is the future of academic collaborationwith foreign universities in social science research?Are there any such ventures in the offing atUMT?Dr Hameed: We have initiated dialogue with few foreignuniversities. But the country is passing thoughdifficult circumstances. A meaningful collaborationstarts with exchange of faculty and students. Onlyone-way exchange is possible these days because of securityreasons. We plan to change our direction fromWest to East. The East has better potential for academiccollaboration, I believe.UMT News: What potential areas of research wouldyou suggest for SSS&H researchers, both facultymembers and PhD/MPhil scholars?Dr Hameed: New lines of research based on ground realitiesneed to be initiated in all social sciences. Prof DrHasan Sohaib Murad, Rector UMT, is very supportivefor the development of social sciences. A number of initiativeshave already been taken by him such as establishmentof School of Law and Policy, Institute ofCommunication and Cultural Studies, Centre forWoman Studies and Special Education. We have recentlyestablished Department of Clinical Psychology.We are in the process of setting up Departments ofSociology, Political Sciences, International Relationsand Psychology. The main purpose of these seats ofhigher learning is to boost research activities in thesedisciplines.UMT News: How can we build the capacity of youngfaculty members and PhD/MPhil scholars to conductboth qualitative and quantitative research?Dr Hameed: The best way of capacity building is to engagein practical research. Since we have failed to establishindigenous lines of research, our researchersdo not feel motivated for putting in their best efforts.There is a dire need to develop new lines of researchbased on our social problem. Research on given alienagenda, even with flooding of funds, cannot create anatural research culture.UMT News: UMT is better known for its businessmanagement, IT and engineering degrees althoughwe are offering some very strong programs in the socialsciences as well. How can this perception bechanged?Dr Hameed: Only by producing quality research anddisseminating it through our own research journals.The perception of social sciences is not confined toUMT only. We need extended and sustained team effortsfor this purpose. We must promote professionalbodies in each discipline of social sciences at the nationallevel.UMT News: What are your short term and long termgoals for the School of Social Sciences andHumanities at UMT?Dr Hameed: Short-term goals include the strengtheningof existing departments of the school by inductingthe best possible faculty and attracting bright students.Our undergraduate programs have recentlyreached the first and the toughest milestone of “breakeven”. The Rector has already advised me to convertthese programs into departments. We are focusing onthe field of Psychology with its various shades. As faras the long-term goals are concerned, probably skywould be the limit. We wish prospective participantsshould indentify UMT with its School of SocialSciences and Humanities, a vibrant, progressive andstill indigenous seat of higher learning. This schoolhouses five faculties of the UMT Charter.
