News from Brook HouseSo far this term it has been an exciting and successful time forBrook House pupils and teachers alike. We start the term well bycoming second in the Tug of War competition under very hot andhumid conditions. This was followed quickly by a well earnedand nail‐biting victory in the Senior Boys, Inter House Basketballcompetition. In the inter‐house football tournament both boys’ and girls’teams did Brook proud. Both of the girls’ team notched up a wineach ‐ a huge improvement on last year and it was a joy to watchsuch commitment and enthusiasm. The boys did really well andthe two junior teams were unlucky not to progress to the finals. The senior boys got to the final of their competition, only to bethwarted in a penalty shootout. Better luck next year. However, not only are Brook House pupils talented on the sportsfield, but they ran away with the Inter‐House Debating competition. Our team of Charlie MacDonnell, David Holden and Tabussamstole the show with their excellent speeches. Finally, I would like to invite all Brook House parents to a coffeemorning onThursday 9 th of December at 8.30 am in the Brook House andForemarke office.Ms A DadswellHousemistress of Brook HouseNews from Orchard HouseThe term has continued apace with various successes in OrchardHouse. ReCycle Winter CAS ActivityWaking up a little bit later than 6am on a Wednesday, then taking a trip down to Festival Citysounds perfect to me, especially if it means I get to spend most of the day being creative and makingholiday decorations for the upcoming festivities. That's how sixteen Year 12s from Repton, along with six girls of Rashid Pediatric Therapy Centre, spent the morning of the 24th November. As a fun and hands‐on CAS activity, 16 IB students participated in the event organised by theGYEM, a newly established youth foundation In Dubai. Created by former IB students, the centre inFestival City aims to help offer activities for students in need of CAS services, or youth that wouldlike to give back to the community. In fact, Seaon Shin, one of the founders, came up with the ideaof GYEM because she was fed up that the youth of our generation are constantly described as lazyand unwilling to participate in charitable opportunities; if there are any there. Her goal is for thereto be a group in Dubai that offers fun and creative events that all adolescents can participate in.The particular project that we are involved was the ReCycle Winter creations. The idea is that insmall groups, made up of members from mainstream schools and special needs’ schools, studentscreate decorations from used materials like plastic bottles, cans and old CDs. Naturally, it was amess, but the results were amazing. When we arrived at the GYEM centre, the setup began; 7 tables full of newspapers, bottles, glue, paint, markers and material were spread out in a long, bright room. At around 9.30am, the studentsfrom Rashid Pediatric arrived to find all 16 Repton students all ready for the creativity to begin. From then until 12.00pm, the creation of water bottle snowmen, light bulb fairies and baubles, and giant paper sweeties was underway. Everyone got artistic and creative with glitter and paintflying in all directions.Overall, it was a fantastic day with incredible decorations. The girls from Rashid Pediatric TherapyCentre certainly showed everyone their art skills, and their creations stood out miles from thebunch. It was a great event run by very understanding and helpful organisers that deserve a hugethank you for giving us this unique opportunity.Heather MacPherson, Year 12.Calling on all GLEEksHow many musical TV shows have worked in the past? Let’s face it – not that many. So when Gleefirst aired in 2009, people doubted that it would work, and held their breath as the first episode, named Pilot, aired. Fast forward about a year, and the Fox TV show, directed and produced byRyan Murphy, is one of the most successful shows on TV! The series, which stars Lea Michele, CoryMontieth, Matthew Morrison and a number of other very talented performers (take Kevin McHalefrom NLT) completed its first season in the spring of 2010, and the second season started airing inthe U.S. in September 2010. Many people from across the world have watched this show, which followsthe lives of the McKinley High Glee Club members –from teenage pregnancy and romantic affairsto slushies and rivalry. Featuring songs like Don’t Stop Believing, Gold Digger, Take A Bow, ForgetYou and Empire State of Mind, as well as amazing dance numbers! You’ll enjoy every single episodeand get soaked into the drama of twelve high school students, a Spanish teacher and a pushyand tyrant cheerleading coach (who seems to love her tracksuits).Chantal Marauta, 9‐BrookPage 13

A Winter ConcertThe Winter Concert will be held on Monday 13 th December at 6:30pm in The Atrium. This event will reflect some of the corporatemusic making from all sections of the school (junior/Prep/Senior) and will include a few items of a seasonal nature. We look forwardto your support at the end of a long and busy term, and to be able to finish for the break with a ‘celebration’ of musical talent from allage groups.Final rehearsals will be negotiated during school time, but senior school pupils whom are involved with this event should expect toremain at school to rehearse through the afternoon of Monday 13 th . The calendared rehearsal for seniors on Sunday 12 th at 2:30pmhas been re‐scheduled.Gala Charity ConcertThis collaboration charity concert at DUCTAC Mall of the Emirates featuredtwo of our prominent musicians, Henriikka Pentti (Year 12) on Cello andNaila Moharramova (staff) on Piano. Two other performers Laura Pring –Soprano and Jane Gilbert – Flute, flew in from the UK to make up the ensembleand produce a recital which was varied and entertaining. In addition toseveral flute classics, one of the highlights of the concert was the sublimerendition of the Rachmaninov Cello Sonata (1 st Mvt.) performed by Henriikkaand Naila – a clear collaborative understanding of ensemble as theintentions of the composer were laid bare and enjoyed by all. The quality of accompaniment from Naila wasoutstanding throughout the evening and it was a rare treat to hear Laura who is already established as a performingand recording artist. An exceptional evening and a good opportunity to allow our wider community to hear some of the talent wehave at Repton.Jason Carter – Harp GuitarTo continue his long association with Repton, JasonCarter presented a workshop and recital demonstratingthe splendor of the Harp‐Guitar and regaling hisexperiences in far off places. This was an example of apassionate artist offering more than just technicalprowess on an instrument; more a journal of personaland musical understanding and growth presented toan avid audience.Through the afternoon Jason performed to many ofthe pupils in the school from years 5 to year 9 andthen presented a ‘Sunset’ concert in The Atrium as day turned to night. Jason is as fascinating as theinstrument he plays and the occasion was an inspiration to explore and expand the possibilities ofmusic making regardless of any cultural diversity. If you missed the chance to hear Jason while hewas here have a look at his website at www.jasoncarter.net to get a flavour.Upper Years’ RecitalAt the end of a long and busy period for the music department, soloists from our upperyears (years 9 and above) presented a concert of great diversity. These events arean opportunity for pupils to gain some stage experience and get the ‘buzz’ from performinglive; our lower years’ recital is on Sunday 28 th November and a series of Prepschool events (years 5 & 6) in early December. All parents are most welcome at allPage these 14 events.
