Six credits.In contrast to health protection and illness prevention, healthpromotion is a broad and holistic concept. This courseexplores the concept of health promotion; the nurse’s role inhealth promotion; the teaching-learning process; populationhealth; social action and justice; and the socio-cultural,economic, and political factors that influence health andhealth behaviour. Three credits.The foundation for all subsequent nursing courses, thiscourse explores the evolution of nursing as a profession,including its theoretical and philosophical bases. Topicsinclude Orem’s self-care theory, legal and ethical issues,health care reform, the image of professional nursing, andchanging health care priorities. Three credits.18
