SAFETYOffering a safe and healthy workplaceis a core component of our ‘employerof choice’ agenda. We aim to achieve‘zero harm’ by creating and instillinga company and industry culturethat protects people from harm andimproves their health and well-being.PerformanceAlthough the number of people wholost their lives while working for usdeclined to 13 for the year (2011: 17),any loss of life is unacceptable and noone should have to risk their life whileworking for us. Seven of these deathsoccurred at our Platinum business,where the majority of fatal incidentsstill occur, despite a significantimprovement of 61% over the pastfi v ey e a r s .Our lost-time injury frequency rate(LTIFR) improved from 0.64 in 2011to 0.60 in <strong>2012</strong>. Furthermore, our totalrecordable case frequency rate, whichincludes any injury that requires morethan first aid treatment, has startedto improve.Our strategy and managementapproach<strong>Anglo</strong> <strong>American</strong>’s safety strategy isfounded on three key principles: amindset of zero harm; the eliminationof repeat incidents; and the consistentapplication of simple, non-negotiablestandards.We use the <strong>Anglo</strong> <strong>American</strong> safety‘journey model’ – which recognisesthe importance of the roles of bothpeople and systems in a miningbusiness – to measure our progressin delivering against our safetystrategy. We believe we are currentlyat the ‘compliant’ stage, with a growingnumber of operations moving to‘proactive’ and a decreasing numberbeing characterised as ‘reactive’.Our current suite of Group safetyprogrammes focuses on issues thatwill improve our level of maturity on thejourney model. Promoting a healthycommunity and a safe and healthyworkforce is beneficial for everyone.Our strategy and managementapproachWe strive to proactively identify andmanage the source of potential healthrisks in the workplace, and to eliminateexposure to hazards that can causedisease to develop. Building on theseinitiatives is our employee health andwellness programme, which includesa strong emphasis on combatingHIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB) withinour workforce and their families,particularly in southern Africa. In <strong>2012</strong>, wecontinued to roll out new mandatorytechnical standards that address ourprincipal health risks relating to noise,dust (inhaled hazards or airbornepollutants), fatigue, alcohol andsubstance abuse. We also refreshedthe risk management approach withinthe Occupational Health Way to alignwith our Group-wide integrated riskmanagement approach.The ability to capture and managehealth information is critical if we areto keep our workforce and theirfamilies healthy. Building this capabilitywithin our business was a centralactivity in <strong>2012</strong> and will continue in thecoming year.The number of occupational diseasecases reported in <strong>2012</strong> was 170,compared with 197 in 2011.
