GOVERNANCE DIRECTORS’ REPORTEMPLOYMENT ANDOTHER POLICIESThe Group’s key operating businessesare empowered to manage withinthe context of the different legislativeand social demands of the diversecountries in which those businessesoperate, subject to the standardsembodied in <strong>Anglo</strong> <strong>American</strong>’sGood Citizenship Business Principles.Within all the Group’s businesses,the safe and effective performanceof employees and the maintenanceof positive employee relations are offundamental importance. Managersare charged with ensuring that thefollowing key principles are upheld:• Adherence to national legalstandards on employment andworkplace rights at all times• In addition, adherence to theInternational Labour Organization’score labour rights, including:prohibition of child labour; prohibitionof inhumane treatment of employeesand any form of forced labour,physical punishment or other abuse;recognition of the right of ouremployees to freedom of associationand the promotion of workplaceequality; and the elimination of allforms of unfair discrimination• Continual promotion of safe andhealthy working practices• Provision of opportunities foremployees to enhance their workrelated skills and capabilities• Adoption of fair and appropriateprocedures for determining termsand conditions of employment.It is our policy that people withdisabilities should have full and fairconsideration for all vacancies.Employment of disabled people isconsidered on merit and with regardonly to the ability of any applicant tocarry out the role. We endeavour toretain the employment of, and arrangesuitable retraining for, any employeesin the workforce who become disabledduring their employment. Wherepossible we will adjust a person’sworking environment to enable themto stay in our employment.Further, the Group is committed totreating employees at all levels withrespect and consideration, to investingin their development and to ensuringthat their careers are not constrainedby discrimination or arbitrary barriers.The Good Citizenship BusinessPrinciples are supplemented by four<strong>Anglo</strong> <strong>American</strong> ‘Way’ documents,covering the safety, environmental,occupational health and socialaspects of responsible operation andsustainable development. These setout specific standards for each of thesesubject areas, in line with internationalbest practice.Copies of the Good CitizenshipBusiness Principles and the<strong>Anglo</strong> <strong>American</strong> ‘Way’ documentsare available from the Companyand may be accessed on theCompany’s website.The Business Integrity Policy andPerformance Standards set out howGroup employees, business partnersand major suppliers must act to ensurethat our zero tolerance of corruption isupheld. All senior employees, andemployees in high-risk functions suchas procurement, are trained to embedknowledge of the policy as well as theUK Bribery Act and how to behave incorruption-risk situations. This trainingis ongoing and mandatory for allsenior levels and others where it isdeemed appropriate.The Group has a well-used enterpriseinformation portal, theSource, whichseeks to ensure that employees areregularly updated on developmentswithin the Group, and feedback isencouraged. In addition, the Companyregularly publishes Optima (availableon the Company’s website) andOur World, which contain items ofnews, current affairs and informationrelevant to Group employees.CHARITABLE DONATIONSDuring the year, <strong>Anglo</strong> <strong>American</strong>, itssubsidiaries and the <strong>Anglo</strong> <strong>American</strong>Group Foundation made donationsfor charitable purposes or wider socialinvestments amounting to $154 million(3% of operating profit fromsubsidiaries and joint ventures beforespecial items and remeasurements).Charitable donations of $1.8 millionwere made in the UK, of which themain categories were: educationand training (5.7%) and health andwelfare (22.6%). These figures werecompiled with reference to the LondonBenchmarking Group model fordefining and measuring socialinvestment spending. A fulleranalysis of the Group’s socialinvestment activities can be foundin the Sustainable Development<strong>Report</strong> <strong>2012</strong>.POLITICAL DONATIONSNo political donations were madeduring <strong>2012</strong>. <strong>Anglo</strong> <strong>American</strong> hasan established policy of not makingdonations to, or incurring expensesfor the benefit of, any political partyin any part of the world, including anypolitical party or political organisationas defined in the Political Parties,Elections and Referendums Act 2000.130 <strong>Anglo</strong> <strong>American</strong> plc <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>2012</strong>
