WELCOME TO SUNDSVALL– THE CAPITAL OF NORTHERNSWEDEN (NORRLAND)If there is a Swedish city that has risen fromthe ashes like a Phoenix and dazzled the restof the world with its new splendour, it mustbe Sundsvall. After the major fire in 1888, thecity was rebuilt with the insurance moneyand contributions from the rich timbermagnates. It was built entirely in stone anddesigned by the leading architects of thetime, who took pride in outdoing eachother. It would be absolutely impossibleto build a similar city today. Back then,Sundsvall was Sweden's Klondike, a city towhich thousands of people travelled to seektheir fortune and a better life. Today,Sundsvall is the capital of Norrland, a citybuzzing with life and activity more than ever.Theopportunities to find happiness here have notdiminished with the years. Quite the opposite.Come to the Tourist Office on the Town Square,Stora Torget and we'll give you our hottest tipson how to find all the great things that are going on.June 6, Stora Torget

UNMISSABLEHirschska huset, Stora TorgetThe townisatyourfeetSÖDRA BERGET– THE SOUTHERN MOUNTAINSödra Berget is perfect for outdoor activities. Inthe winter we ski and snowboard here or fishfor trout through the ice. In the summer we gojogging, running or just have fun. A year or twoago we were visited by a real reindeer that likedit here so much that it raced us on the ski trailsthroughout the winter. On the north side of the mountain is the slalomslope at Sundsvalls Slalombacke. It has World Cupstatus and there’s a fun park too.Skiing and snowboarding are also popular onSidsjöbacken on the western side of the mountain. On Sidsjön lake itself, you can fish on the ice orgo skating.A 3 km trail runs round the lake for jogging, running or skiing. You can swim and fish in thelake, while its jetties and picnic areas are perfectfor barbecues, picnics or just sitting and setting theworld to rights. That’s what we do here, anyway, soexpect company. In the winter, the top of Södra Berget is a ski stadiumthat links together all the ski trails on themountain. In the summer it is a big playground andthe starting point for our adventure trails, whichoffer challenges for anyone who enjoys climbingand balancing. At the top of the mountain thereis also a hotel with a popular spa offering a rangeof relaxing baths and treatments. The hotel has anextensive programme of entertainment, withpopular show and dance evenings.STENSTAN– STONE TOWN CITY CENTREIn eight hours, over 400 properties in the oldwooden city were turned into ash and 9,000 ofthe city’s 11,000 inhabitants were made homelessin Sweden’s biggest ever city fire on June 251888.The new city centre was built entirely of stoneto avoid history repeating itself. The richly decoratedNeo-Renaissance buildings are historicallyinteresting and many of them are now listed.High up on one of the towers on Hirschska huset, there is a brass fire-breathing dragon positionedthere to protect the building against fire. 100years later, this fire-breathing dragon was themodel for Sundsvall’s new city symbol. You can learn more about the exciting history ofSundsvall on a guided walk around the city. Oneway of doing this is at your own pace withheadphones and an mp3 player.During the summer half of the year, there are alsoguided roof tours of a district in Stenstaden.Theycan be booked at the Tourist Office.4V I S I T S U N D S V A L L .
