POINTS TO PONDERWow! Thespring of 2012 willbe rememberedfor a couple ofthings. Warmerthan normal temperatures and hotterthan ever bull sales. The spring salerun has been great in all parts ofCanada. From the Maritimes wherethe Nappan test station sale was asgood as ever to Quebec where thesales were stronger than last year, toOntario where the sales, includingsome new ones, found great success,to right across the west. Alberta salesseemed to be the strongest ofanywhere, where switching toCharolais bulls is in full swing. Many new sales in the prairiesprovided solid averages with mostselling more bulls off the yards thisyear than ever before. A sale is not asilver bullet to getting rich sellingbulls, but if you work hard, it willproduce good results and a higher topend than can usually be obtained byprivate treaty. This of course isbalanced against higher costs of doingbusiness, so it needs to be looked atobjectively. If the sale can be held onthe farm, it will cut down on the workand expense of going to town, so thisneeds to be looked at as well.In this issue you will see the salereports and at the back the SaleSummary which shows the salestatistics of all the bull sales for thepast 31 years. The sale reports willshow you which bloodlines andprograms were the most sought afterand some appreciation ads from manyconscientious breeders profile some ofthe high selling bulls in Canada thisspring. The top end of the sales werealso stronger with more $10,000 plusbulls selling in the sales. So what trends did I see this springin the sales? Interestingly enough itvaried somewhat from sale to sale andregion to region. Many breeders havedeveloped their program and buyersthat are looking for that havefollowed. In some sales the buyershave been very birth weightconscious. I found this with largeroperations who maybe haven’t beenusing Charolais bulls for a while andare more concerned about calvingease than anything. In other sales thebuyers were more concerned aboutmeat and performance and I saw thisfrom maybe smaller number herdswho are looking to maximize theirreturn per cow and don’t mindhelping the odd calf if it meansanother 100 lb. at weaning. As I havesaid before, you need to define yourprogram and produce what yourcustomers are asking and paying themost money for.Another trend I saw this spring wasmore people talking about and tryingCharolais bulls on black cows. I seethis getting bigger and bigger as moretry it and see that it works. We needto keep talking about it and givingexamples of who is doing it and howwell it is working.I also think the higher cull bullprices put more demand on the bullsales of all breeds. I was visiting withone commercial producer inSaskatchewan in April who had sold asix year old bull that he had beenfeeding some grain and sileage to, sohe was in good shape. The bullweighed 2,865 lb. shrunk and sold for1.0350 for over $2,900 take home. Thisis what kept the consumption ofnumbers up in many sales. This spring there were morepurebred breeders searching for betterbulls and willing to pay more forthem. I also saw that more breederswere researching the pedigrees of thebulls they were interested in. Withmore breeders using the internet morefrequently this becomes easier. Insome cases when looking at the damof a bull they found that she had nothad a calf registered every year soassumed she wasn’t a consistentproducer. If you haven’t beenregistering all your calves andsending in the performance data, Iwould recommend that you start. ThisFrom the FieldHelge Byinformation trend will continue andbecome more important to many andnot registering and transferring bullswill cost you money down the road. There were also more breedersdoing and requesting genomic testing. Some were doing igenity testingespecially for identifying theHomozygous Polled bulls and morewere doing the Leptin test done byQuantum. I also see these becomingmore sought after and requested inthe future and if these breeders arewilling to pay more for those that testhow they want them, I see it as beingfinancially feasible. I also wonder nowwith some profit back in the business,if more ultrasounding needs to bedone in conjunction with the genomictesting to see if this can become moreaccurate in the future.Another subject that has been raisedlately is the future of the PFRApasture system after cutbacks wereannounced in the last federal budget. The current community pasturesystem includes 61 sites inSaskatchewan, 24 in Manitoba andtwo in Alberta. The communitypastures were the PFRA’s biggest andlongest-running soil conservationprogram on the prairies, set up in the1930s to reclaim badly eroded soils. They now cover over 2.2 million acresof rangeland, used each summer byabout 3,100 producers, who pay feesto graze about 220,000 head oflivestock. The government agency hasinformed its staff of its plan for thepastures, in which 10 pastures will bedivested in 2013, followed byadditional pastures each year until“full divestiture is achieved in 2018. “Grazing and breeding services onremaining pastures are to bemaintained throughout the transitionperiod and pasture patrons “willreceive as much notice as possible,”the government said. The six-yearstretch is expected to allow time forprovinces, municipalities, pasturesusers and “other stakeholders” to helpmanage the transition.continued on page 16Charolais Banner • May 2012 5

And just to allayeveryone’s fears, Judy Cummer will stillbe with us in her usual capacity until theend of the year. Judy is stepping downfrom her current role as she would likemore time at home with her husband as heretired a few years ago. However, thegood news is that Judy will continue toserve the membership in 2013 and beyondin a part time role.Mel will have the opportunity to gainknowledge of the Association’s systemsunder the tutelage of Judy, which shouldenable a seamless transition of duties andexpectations with the membership. A pressrelease introducing Mel is featured in thismonth’s Charolais Banner. The Charolais office is undergoing amajor renovation, which will be the firstsince the early nineties. In December, wewere approached by our major tenant witha request for more space in the buildingand those that are familiar with the officelayout would know that the open area inthe center of the building was largelyunderutilized due to a downsizing inrecent years. It was agreed that they couldtake over that section, so apart from thecommon areas of the computer room, kitchen and bathrooms: the CCA will nowbe housed in the reception area and thethree south offices, and retain control ofthe boardroom. One of the tenant’s requirements was aninterior upgrade to their space in theSpring Report CardNeil Gillies, General Manager, Canadian Charolais Associationbuilding and they offered to fund therenovation. Due to the fact that thebuilding had not seen any upgrades in thepast 20 or so years, we decided to upgradethe CCA portion of the building andrefurbish the kitchen and bathroom areas. For anybody who has renovated andtried to live and work in the same spacewill know, on many days the sounds, smells and upheaval of moving equipmentand furniture put a strain onaccomplishing daily tasks. However afterabout 6 weeks, we are nearing thecompletion and if you get an opportunity, please stop by for a tour and a visit. My last topic for this month is to reporton the extended bull sale tour that Icarried out this spring. We decided that itwould be a good opportunity for me totravel to a series of bull sales across theprairies to basically interact with ourmembership and their buyers, and get apulse on the industry and the wants andneeds of the marketplace. My sojournlasted 24 days and encompassed 21 salesin the three prairie provincesAs everybody would know, the salesacross the country were very strong;exceptional could even be a descriptionused. Since first observing Charolais bullsales in the mid seventies I have neverseen such a robust market as weexperienced this year.Needless to say everybody was morethan willing to talk cows again, which hasbeen a long time coming. Due to spaceconstraints the article must end, howeverif anybody would like to visit about thetrip please give me a call and we can talkcows – or should we say bulls.NOTICE OF MEETINGIn accordance with Article IV of the By-Laws of the Canadian Charolais Association, you are hereby officially notified of the 53rd Annual Meeting and Convention of theCanadian Charolais Association, to be held on Wednesday, July 11th, 2012 at 3:00p.m MDST at the Olds College Alumni Centre, Olds, Alberta.NOTE: Only Active Members in good standing shall be entitled to vote at anymeeting of the Association, and each active member or his/her proxy shall have onevote; only an active member in good standing may act as proxy for a member and nomember shall vote as proxy for more than three (3) other members.A member in good standing is a member who is not in default of any of the By-Lawshereof, and who is not in arrears in payment of any membership fee, dues, or othermonies to the Association, and who is not under suspension from the Association.Charolais Banner • May 2012 7

Dick served as fieldrepresentative for the eastern half ofthe United States, selling advertisingand working the ring at sales, beforemoving to Kansas City to work as themagazine's director of field staff andto eventually become part owner ofthe publication. In time, the AmericanInternational Charolais Associationstarted their own breed publication, the Charolais Journal, and Dickserved as field representative in theeastern United States for the newpublication.During his years with the Charolaispublications, he became acquaintedwith Charolais breeders across theNorth American Continent, as well asthe cattle they produced andmerchandized. So in 1979, Dick andhis wife, Ruth Ann, formedCarmichael Enterprises, anindependent Charolais salesmanagement business. Over the next15 years, Dick conducted andmanaged over 200 auction salesthroughout the U.S. and Canada, withmany of those sales setting highsellingrecords for the breed that stillstand today. Dick managed sales at allof Canada's major livestock shows, including the Canadian WesternAgribition in Regina, CalgaryStampede, Toronto Winter Fair,Edmonton Northlands Expo, andManitoba Ag-Ex in Brandon.Dick resides in Springfield, TN,with his wife, Ruth Ann, and hecontinues to work the ring at morethan 150 sales annually. If so, besure to come out to Olds, Alberta, thisJuly for another fun filled CCYA. Weare promising some very excitingopportunities, however, with theseopportunities come some notablechanges for this year only. The first and most significantchange is that the dates have changedand it will be held the week earlier, running from Tuesday throughFriday. This means the conference willrun from Tuesday, July 10th untilFriday, July 13th. Hopefullysuperstition doesn’t scare anyonefrom coming! The change to these dates is wherethe exciting opportunity comes. Thisyear every participant that chooseswill have the opportunity to competethrough Summer Synergy for aCalgary Stampede Scholarship! Therewill be over $50,000 in scholarshipmoney awarded to exhibitors of allages. To be eligible for a scholarshipthere are only two additionalrequirements outside of your regularCCYA participation. If you areinterested in a scholarship, you needto go to www.summersynergy.ca anddo the Summer Synergy marketingcomponent, as soon as you finishreading this newsletter. Please notethat the Synergy and CCYA agecategories are different so do yoursynergy marketing based onSynergy’s age groups! The other is onyour regular CCYA registration formthere will be a box to be checked ifyou are doing the Synergy marketing. There will also be the additionalSynergy fee if you check this box. Youalso need to understand that if yousign up for the Synergy marketing itwill not help your CCYA points and ifyou are selected as a finalist for ascholarship you will have to attend aninterview Saturday the 14th all day! Ifyou are not interested in a scholarshipthen you will not be affected and itwill be just as every other CCYA! Andnot participating in Synergy will notaffect your CCYA points. The other opportunity for this yearwe will be doing a multi-judging incombination with Synergy. This willgive everyone an opportunity tobroaden and strengthen his or herjudging skills. The one notable change theNational Board made in January tothe Rules & Regulations is that wehave made a full slate of commercialclasses instead of just the previousbred heifers. So anyone withcommercial heifer calves, bred heifers,or cow/calf pairs get them ready tocome to Olds this summer!I know that there have been a lot ofchanges for this year and it will benew for everyone. The only realchanges however are for before andafter the CCYA conference so from the10th to 13th it is still just CCYA! NEWSThe Canadian Cattle Genome Project– Request for Resources and DataSharing PlanThe Canadian Charolais Associationwill provide the Canadian CattleGenome Project with a pedigree filethat contains the parentage of allanimals registered with the Association. This pedigree file will be available toresearchers at collaborating researchinstitutions including those atAgriculture and Agri-Food Canada,New Zealand AgResearch, theAustralian Cooperative ResearchCentre for Beef Genetic Technologies,United States Department ofAgriculture, the Scottish AgriculturalCollege, and Teagasc (Ireland). Thisfile will be used for research purposesonly and will not be published orshared with any non-Projectpersonnel or other breed associationswithout the written permission fromthe Association. The pedigree file will be analyzed bythe Project’s researchers to identify keyhistorical animals that have had asignificant impact on the genetics ofthe current Charolais population(s).The researchers will create a list of keyindividuals that defines each animal’stotal genetic contribution, marginalgenetic contribution, and cumulativegenetic contribution. This list will beprovided to the Association by email, and will be made available on theProject’s website under theAssociation’s unique login that is notaccessible to the public or the otherbreed associations. It will also beavailable to all Project researchers andcollaborators. This list will be used forresearch purposes only and will not bepublished or shared with any non-Project personnel or other breedassociations without writtenpermission from the Association.Based on the list of key animals, theAssociation will, to the best of theirability, source and provide the Projectwith samples containing a source ofDNA (semen vials, semen straws, blood, tail hair, tissue) for each animalon the list provided to them by theProject. If possible, the Association willalso provide information on howrare/difficult it is to replace eachsample. Additional samples will berequested from the Association later inthe Project from animals lower on thebreeding pyramid for use in validatingthe imputation. These samples willalso be procured by the Association tothe best of their ability and provided tothe Project. All samples will be submitted forDNA extraction and sequencing and/orgenotyping at a facility chosen by theProject. All sequence and genotypedata that results from samplesprovided by the Association will beaccessible to the Association throughthe Project’s website(www.canadacow.ca) under a uniquelogin. This information will be storedon the website for a minimum of 2years after the completion of theproject. The Association is free to shareall data it receives from the Project (onthe samples provided by theAssociation) as it feels appropriate. The Project will sequenceapproximately 30 individuals fromeach breed or population atapproximately 5-fold coverage. Thecoverage of each animal may changedepending on the Project’s resourcesand the scientific data requirements ofthe Project. All sequence datagenerated by the Project will have theanimal ID associated with it and willbe made available to: the Associationthrough the project’s website;researchers at collaborating researchinstitutions; and Dr. Ben Hayes(Department of Primary IndustriesVictoria, Biosciences Research Division,Bundoora, Australia) for use in the1000 Bull Genomes Project(www.1000bullgenomes.com).All project members will use thesequence data generated for researchpurposes only and will not publish orshare the raw data with any nonprojectpersonnel or other breed38 Charolais Banner • May 2012associations without writtenpermission from the Association. All sequence data will be stored atthe University of Alberta, and subsetsof data (processed sequence reads)will be mirrored on a servermaintained by Ben Hayes. Once theproject is nearing completion thesequence data with the associatedanimal ID will be placed in publicdatabases (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sra).The Project will complete highdensity (HD) genotyping (680K or770K) on approximately 480 cattle and50K genotyping on approximately 500cattle in each population depending onstrategic importance to the Project, andconsidering collaborating resources.Additional individuals may begenotyped (e.g. RFI tested animals) butthis will be at the discretion of theProject’s researchers and will be basedon scientific merit. All genotype data generated by theProject will have the animal IDassociated with it and during theproject will be made available to theAssociation through the project’swebsite and researchers atcollaborating research institutions. All project members will use thedata for research purposes only andwill not publish or share the raw datawith any non-project personnel orother breed associations withoutwritten permission from theAssociation. Once the project is nearingcompletion the genotype data, withoutthe associated animal ID, will beplaced in public databases (if any areavailable) or on the Project’s websiteand will be accessible to the public. Atthe end of the Project, the Project willalso provide data that will allow theAssociation to genotype animals at afacility of their choice and impute thedata from 50K to HD, as enabledthrough the project (dependent onsuccess of project).

HERD HEALTHWhen lookinginto any artificialinseminationprogram severalgoals must bekept in mind.Achieving pregnancies is of course themost important. Improving yourgenetic base is always a desire of anybreeder whether you are a commercialoperator or seed stock breeder. Inorder to be successful though costsboth for supplies and labor must firstbe considered.Regardless of all the programsavailable heat detection is still a veryimportant key in overall success. Methods to assist in this are the use ofdetector patches, heat detector paintor marker (gomerized) bulls. Thepatches can lead to errors when theydischarge from cows rubbing them onbush and with light rubbing they canbe partially discharged releasing someof the red color. You want to see acomplete red color to verify a cow isin heat.Gomer bulls can be very beneficialin smaller breeding groups. I havetried the numerous ways to create amarker animal including implantingopen cows and juicing up steers withtestosterone. The best procedure Ihave found is using a smaller quietbull either from your herd or a knownherd and performing anepididymectomy on him. Yourveterinarian will know how to do thisprocedure. This is the simplest mosteconomical surgery and the bull canbe shipped after that season. Use apoorer grade animal preferably withsmaller testicles. The cost of theprocedure is much cheaper than overwintering the bull until next season.Chin ball markers are a great helpbut a word of caution, let the bull getused to the marker without any ink inTips on Practical Heat DetectionRoy Lewis, DVMit for several days. Otherwise fences, watering bowls and everythingaround will be marked till the bullgets used to wearing this new device.Changing ink colour can aid witherrors in confusing cows already bred. Many colours of ink are available.Even though these marker bulls arefull penetration, breeder’s disease riskis very low since virgin bulls are usedfrom a known source. It has beenfound that the natural act of breedingwith a gomer may increase the AIrates a small percentage as well.Marker bulls should not be consideredif the groupis too large or if synchronization isbeing done. Otherwise the bulls getoverworked, burned out and basicallydon't know which way to turn. In thesituation of large groups, manualdetection is still the best by spendingtime observing heats especiallytowards dawn or dusk.Synchronization programs ifsuccessful, concentrate heat detectiontimes over just a few days. If youwish to synchronize large groups ofheifers, a program using MGA at 0.5mg per head for 14 days, withdrawingit and either waiting for the secondheat (first heat is not a fertile one) orusing a prostaglandin 15 to 19 daysafter withdrawal of the MGA willsynchronize most heifers. If yourheifer pen is large you may want tostagger groups of heifers so calvingdoes not overwhelm you thefollowing year. Be warned thisprogram does not work successfullyin cows Several programs have beendeveloped to synchronize cows, someare very labor intensive butconception rates can be very good.Hired labor for breeding can beutilized if the producer does not doAI. One shot of prostaglandin if givensufficient time (at least 45 days) aftercalving should have 65 to 75% of cowscoming into heat over 5 days. Otherprograms use GnRh first followed byprostaglandins in 7 days, which willbring most cycling in over one to twodays. The more elaborate CIDR orPRID programs will be talked aboutin other articles.Other programs are available andeach should be explored with yourveterinarian for the best one suited toyour operation. Make sure nutrition isadequate; phosphorus and energy arethe two keys for cycling to occur. The biggest mistake I feel a lot ofproducers make is to get caught up inthe glamour of AI and lose sight of thefact they still need to get the cow orheifer pregnant early. It's best to onlyAI for one or two cycles and then usegood quality clean up bulls.Heat detection is still desirable evenif natural breeding is occurring forseveral reasons. It ensures the cowsare actually cycling. Especially if newyoung virgin bulls are used, handmating should occur for the firstcouple of breedings. This insuresthese newcomers are actually gettinga successful breeding in. Mark downdates on any breedings observed. Thisinformation can come in handy nextyear at calving if problems arise or ifcows need to be induced. Only a veryfew cows should be coming back atthe next heat otherwise the bullshould be rechecked. I know ofnumerous incidences where diligentfarmers have averted a disaster bycarefully watching if cows werereturning to heat. These hints hopefully will allowyou to have a successful breedingseason with high conception rateswhile at the same time enjoyingsubstantial genetic gain.
