Growth Enables Us <strong>to</strong> Extend our Services<br />

Every staff member at <strong>Hospice</strong> of<br />

Lancaster County, in some way,<br />

<strong>to</strong>uches the lives of patients<br />

<strong>and</strong> families in our care. We are<br />

humbled <strong>to</strong> have the opportunity <strong>to</strong><br />

be a part of this journey <strong>and</strong> be able<br />

<strong>to</strong> provide needed comfort <strong>and</strong> care<br />

<strong>to</strong> so many who are coping with the<br />

challenges of serious illness, end of<br />

life <strong>and</strong> loss.<br />

It is for this reason that we are excited<br />

<strong>to</strong> announce changes at <strong>Hospice</strong> of<br />

Lancaster County that will allow<br />

us <strong>to</strong> provide specialized care <strong>to</strong> so<br />

many more families in our growing<br />

community.<br />

In addition <strong>to</strong> serving Lancaster<br />

County, <strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County<br />

recently exp<strong>and</strong>ed its service area<br />

in order <strong>to</strong> serve families in parts of<br />

Berks, Chester, Dauphin, Lebanon <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>York</strong> counties. Within the past few<br />

years, we have recognized a great <strong>and</strong><br />

growing need, especially throughout<br />

the <strong>York</strong> County region, for more<br />

extensive hospice, palliative <strong>and</strong><br />

bereavement care.<br />

Motivated by this need, we have made<br />

the careful decision <strong>to</strong> collaborate<br />

with WellSpan Health, a highly<br />

respected non-profit integrated<br />

health system, firmly founded in<br />

<strong>York</strong> County <strong>and</strong> noted for its<br />

exceptional community care.<br />

This affiliation represents a collaboration<br />

of two strong organizations. We<br />

are now able <strong>to</strong> include <strong>York</strong> County<br />

<strong>and</strong> Adams counties in our service<br />

area <strong>and</strong> can now offer a broader range<br />

of end-of-life care <strong>to</strong> families in these<br />

communities.<br />

wellness <strong>and</strong> healthy communities,” is<br />

in direct alignment with our own.<br />

A Dedicated Team<br />

for <strong>York</strong> Home<br />

<strong>Hospice</strong> Care<br />

As a logical parallel <strong>to</strong> our affiliation<br />

with WellSpan, we are opening a new<br />

office in <strong>York</strong>. This office, conveniently<br />

located within easy access <strong>to</strong> Route<br />

83 at 224 Saint Charles Way, will<br />

serve as home base <strong>and</strong> will allow the<br />

<strong>York</strong> Home <strong>Hospice</strong> team <strong>to</strong> provide<br />

24-hour hospice care <strong>to</strong> patients <strong>and</strong><br />

families living at home, in nursing<br />

homes or senior care facilities, or in<br />

local hospitals. Home hospice teams<br />

consist of physicians, RNs, Social<br />

Workers, LPNs, <strong>Hospice</strong> Aides,<br />

chaplains, volunteer coordina<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>and</strong><br />

bereavement counselors, including<br />

WellSpan VNA <strong>Hospice</strong> employees,<br />

whom we recently welcomed <strong>to</strong> our<br />

staff. Patients <strong>and</strong> families living in<br />

<strong>York</strong> <strong>and</strong> Adams counties will now<br />

have the opportunity <strong>to</strong> receive care by<br />

our <strong>York</strong> Home <strong>Hospice</strong> team or at one<br />

of our two <strong>Hospice</strong> Inpatient Centers<br />

located in Mount Joy <strong>and</strong> Lancaster.<br />

Adults, teens <strong>and</strong> children in <strong>York</strong><br />

County in need of bereavement support<br />

can benefit from all of the organization’s<br />

bereavement services, most of which are<br />

provided at no cost <strong>to</strong> the community,<br />

<strong>and</strong> are available through the Pathways<br />

Center for Grief & Loss.<br />

<strong>Our</strong> Exp<strong>and</strong>ed Services<br />

Great thought <strong>and</strong> consideration was<br />

given regarding changing our name.<br />

<strong>Our</strong> decision was supported by the<br />

fact that <strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County<br />

has continued <strong>to</strong> make significant<br />

As we continue <strong>to</strong> grow, we remain forever grateful<br />

for the generous community support we receive<br />

that enables us <strong>to</strong> provide our high level of care <strong>to</strong><br />

Lancaster County <strong>and</strong> surrounding regions, <strong>and</strong> now<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>and</strong> Adams counties.<br />

since it was established in 1980. We are<br />

pleased <strong>to</strong> announce our new name:<br />

We strongly believe that this new<br />

name better describes the scope of our<br />

services <strong>and</strong> reflects the fact that our<br />

highly specialized care extends <strong>to</strong> the<br />

entire community. The “Community”<br />

portion of our name is especially<br />

meaningful. Community represents our<br />

entire community, including: patients,<br />

families, friends, caregivers <strong>and</strong> those<br />

who are grieving. “Community”<br />

represents where our patients live, at<br />

home, in a senior care facility or nursing<br />

home or hospital, <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong> our neighbors<br />

who live beyond Lancaster County.<br />

“Community” also represents the many<br />

individuals, businesses, organizations<br />

<strong>and</strong> foundations who provide the base<br />

of support which has made it possible<br />

for us <strong>to</strong> provide the highest quality<br />

end-of-life care since 1980.<br />

While we continue <strong>to</strong> grow, we<br />

recognize the importance of sustaining<br />

our roots. For this reason, we are<br />

retaining within our logo “founded as<br />

<strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County” <strong>and</strong> will<br />

keep the rose from our original logo.<br />

We remain dedicated <strong>to</strong> Lancaster<br />

County <strong>and</strong> at the same time embrace<br />

our sister county. We will continue<br />

<strong>to</strong> provide the highest level of care<br />

<strong>to</strong> Lancaster County <strong>and</strong> all the<br />

regions we serve, <strong>and</strong> are committed<br />

<strong>to</strong> providing that same dedicated<br />

service <strong>to</strong> the <strong>York</strong> County community.<br />

Both organizations are committed <strong>to</strong><br />

ensuring a smooth transition of care<br />

for their patients.<br />

<strong>Our</strong> desire <strong>to</strong> provide care <strong>and</strong> an<br />

overwhelming need for our services<br />

has driven our growth. Now <strong>and</strong><br />

throughout the coming years, the<br />

support of the community remains a<br />

vital fac<strong>to</strong>r in our ability <strong>to</strong> provide this<br />

important care <strong>to</strong> so many in need.<br />

For years, we have remained the<br />

largest provider of hospice services<br />

in Pennsylvania. As we continue <strong>to</strong><br />

grow <strong>to</strong> meet the changing needs of<br />

our exp<strong>and</strong>ing community, we remain<br />

grateful for the vital <strong>and</strong> overwhelming<br />

support we continue <strong>to</strong> receive from<br />

individuals <strong>and</strong> organizations equally<br />

dedicated <strong>to</strong> our mission.<br />

While our name has changed <strong>and</strong> our<br />

service area has grown, what will remain<br />

consistent is our focused emphasis<br />

on caring, comfort <strong>and</strong> dignity for<br />

all families in need of our services,<br />

regardless of ability <strong>to</strong> pay for care.<br />

Endowment Fund<br />

Investing in Future Generations<br />

As a retired kindergarten teacher<br />

of 30 years, with a special place<br />

in her heart for children, Anna<br />

Rose Schannauer created the<br />

Ruach “Breath of God” Endowment Fund.<br />

Every year, income from the Ruach<br />

Endowment Fund allows <strong>Hospice</strong> &<br />

Community Care, founded as <strong>Hospice</strong><br />

of Lancaster County, <strong>to</strong> provide<br />

support for children <strong>and</strong> teens who<br />

are coping with the loss of a loved<br />

one. Through the Pathways Center for<br />

Grief & Loss, this support includes<br />

English <strong>and</strong> Spanish versions of books<br />

<strong>and</strong> DVDs, such as Tear Soup, Please<br />

Look After Mom <strong>and</strong> A Teen’s View<br />

of Grief. In addition, the funds have<br />

provided training for spiritual care,<br />

social work <strong>and</strong> bereavement staff. In<br />

2011, cheerful green <strong>and</strong> blue childsize<br />

furniture was purchased <strong>to</strong> create<br />

a safe <strong>and</strong> secure setting for the Coping<br />

Kids program.<br />

“I’m often asked how we are able <strong>to</strong><br />

offer so many ‘extras’ in the children’s<br />

bereavement support we provide,”<br />

says Patti Anewalt, PhD, Direc<strong>to</strong>r,<br />

Pathways Center for Grief & Loss.<br />

“This question provides me the<br />

opportunity <strong>to</strong> express how<br />

wonderfully supported we are by our<br />

community <strong>and</strong> how the Ruach Fund is<br />

a great example of this support.”<br />

Beyond Kübler-Ross: <strong>New</strong> Perspectives On Death, Dying <strong>and</strong> Grief<br />

Beyond Kübler-Ross: <strong>New</strong><br />

Perspectives On Death, Dying<br />

<strong>and</strong> Grief is a pre-recorded<br />

conference exploring the<br />

evolution from Elizabeth Kübler-<br />

Ross <strong>to</strong> the most current theoretical<br />

perspectives on dying, death <strong>and</strong> grief.<br />

This program emphasizes the practice<br />

implications of these new perspectives<br />

in the field <strong>and</strong> is useful <strong>to</strong> anyone<br />

supporting individuals who are coping<br />

with a life-limiting illness, dying or loss.<br />

“I continue <strong>to</strong> be surprised by the<br />

number of people who still quote<br />

Kübler-Ross’ stages of dying when<br />

talking about grief <strong>and</strong> loss,” said<br />

Dr. Patti Anewalt, Direc<strong>to</strong>r, Pathways<br />

Center for Grief & Loss. “I always<br />

respond that we’ve moved beyond the<br />

stage theory <strong>to</strong> a broader underst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

that more accurately addresses what<br />

the bereaved are experiencing. This<br />

conference will educate professionals<br />

about how far we have come since<br />

Kübler-Ross’ contribution <strong>to</strong> the field of<br />

death, dying <strong>and</strong> grief.”<br />

The Benefits of Early <strong>Hospice</strong> Contact<br />

The goal of <strong>Hospice</strong> &<br />

Community Care, which<br />

was founded as <strong>Hospice</strong><br />

of Lancaster County, is <strong>to</strong><br />

provide hospice care in the most<br />

comfortable setting, whether at home,<br />

in a nursing home or senior care<br />

facility, in the hospital or at one of the<br />

organization’s inpatient centers. Most<br />

<strong>Hospice</strong> patients receive care at home<br />

<strong>and</strong> are served by a Home <strong>Hospice</strong><br />

team, consisting of physicians, nurses,<br />

social workers, chaplains, bereavement<br />

counselors <strong>and</strong> volunteers.<br />

“Some families <strong>and</strong> medical<br />

professionals may feel turning <strong>to</strong><br />

hospice means they’ve given up hope,”<br />

says Valerie Peifer, Direc<strong>to</strong>r of Home<br />

<strong>Hospice</strong>. “It’s very hard for physicians<br />

<strong>to</strong> tell their patients that there are no<br />

treatment options left. But hospice<br />

care does not mean treatment s<strong>to</strong>ps.<br />

It means that treatment has shifted <strong>to</strong><br />

meet goals of comfort <strong>and</strong> maximizing<br />

function <strong>and</strong> quality of life. Symp<strong>to</strong>ms<br />

like pain, nausea <strong>and</strong> shortness of<br />

breath are managed so that the patient<br />

feels well enough <strong>to</strong> do the things he<br />

or she chooses <strong>to</strong> do.”<br />

“Earlier access <strong>to</strong> Home <strong>Hospice</strong><br />

services provides the availability <strong>and</strong><br />

expertise of the <strong>Hospice</strong> family of<br />

professionals,” says Joel L. Samitt,<br />

D.O., Meadowbrook Family Medicine.<br />

“In addition <strong>to</strong> pain <strong>and</strong> symp<strong>to</strong>m<br />

control, this care can include respite<br />

<strong>and</strong> support<br />

for family<br />

caregivers,<br />

bereavement<br />

services or<br />

simply access<br />

<strong>to</strong> other needed<br />

community<br />

services as<br />

patients <strong>and</strong><br />

“You all made it possible for us <strong>to</strong> keep mom comfortable<br />

in her own home right until the very end, as was her wish,<br />

<strong>and</strong> for that we are forever grateful.”<br />

families deal with end-of-life issues.<br />

Timely <strong>and</strong> earlier access <strong>to</strong> <strong>Hospice</strong><br />

services improves the quality of life.”<br />

<strong>Hospice</strong> teams can also coordinate<br />

medical <strong>and</strong> nursing care, prescriptions<br />

<strong>and</strong> equipment <strong>and</strong> provide assistance<br />

with bathing <strong>and</strong> feeding if necessary.<br />

Staff also provide education <strong>and</strong><br />

training for caregivers in preventing<br />

falls, how <strong>to</strong> perform tasks, recognize<br />

<strong>and</strong> respond <strong>to</strong> memory loss <strong>and</strong> what<br />

<strong>to</strong> expect at end of life. Social workers<br />

can help with underst<strong>and</strong>ing insurance<br />

coverage <strong>and</strong> help <strong>to</strong> coordinate<br />

additional assistance through<br />

community resources.<br />

When families see how the quality of<br />

life for their loved one is improved with<br />

hospice care, many express that they<br />

wish they made the contact earlier.<br />

“One of the greatest advantages of<br />

having hospice in early, from a nurse’s<br />

perspective, is trust <strong>and</strong> support,”<br />

says Beverly Costa, RN on <strong>Hospice</strong> &<br />

Community Care’s Red Team. “After<br />

establishing that relationship, patients<br />

<strong>and</strong> families are more open <strong>to</strong> allowing<br />

us <strong>to</strong> manage their symp<strong>to</strong>ms <strong>and</strong><br />

support them emotionally.”<br />

Bev Costa found herself in the role of<br />

caregiver for her father when he became<br />

seriously ill <strong>and</strong> turned <strong>to</strong> <strong>Hospice</strong>. “I<br />

had <strong>to</strong> work while my father was sick<br />

<strong>and</strong> the <strong>Hospice</strong> team <strong>to</strong>ok so much<br />

of the burden off me. They allowed<br />

me <strong>to</strong> be the daughter <strong>and</strong> not the<br />

nurse, served as a voice of reason <strong>and</strong><br />

supported me when I cried.”<br />

Care for the Caregiver<br />

Caring for a loved one coping with a<br />

serious illness can be physically <strong>and</strong><br />

emotionally exhausting, but can also<br />

be rewarding <strong>and</strong> lead <strong>to</strong> stronger<br />

relationships. <strong>Hospice</strong> & Community<br />

Care recognizes that caregivers who<br />

know what <strong>to</strong> expect <strong>and</strong> are prepared<br />

with practical information <strong>and</strong> problemsolving<br />

<strong>to</strong>ols are less likely <strong>to</strong> feel<br />

overwhelmed or helpless. <strong>Hospice</strong> offers<br />

several free family caregiver seminars<br />

<strong>and</strong> offers websites, www.seriousillness.<br />

org/york, aimed at providing valuable<br />

information <strong>to</strong> help the seriously ill<br />

<strong>and</strong> their families learn how <strong>to</strong> live as<br />

Suk Shuglie Highlights<br />

Labor Day Auction<br />

Aprominent Lancaster County artist,<br />

Suk Shuglie is a Lancaster favorite.<br />

Known for her beautiful, bold<br />

colors, including purple sheep, bucolic<br />

farml<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> flowers, Shuglie is loved by<br />

many in the community <strong>and</strong>, according <strong>to</strong><br />

Shuglie, the feeling is mutual.<br />

“I have so many wonderful, beautiful<br />

cus<strong>to</strong>mers,” she says. “Lancaster County<br />

is so special <strong>and</strong> I love it here.” Shuglie<br />

moved from her native South Korea in<br />

1980 with her husb<strong>and</strong>, Wes, <strong>and</strong> now<br />

considers Lancaster her home<strong>to</strong>wn.<br />

in Lancaster in 1998 <strong>and</strong> has supported<br />

a neighbor received care in his<br />

home. “The nurses who came, day<br />

<strong>and</strong> night, were angels,” she says. Shuglie<br />

lost her own beloved husb<strong>and</strong> when he<br />

died suddenly last year.<br />

“Wes did everything for me,” says<br />

Shuglie. “I always appreciated him, but<br />

now I appreciate him even more. He<br />

made me work harder…He made me a<br />

better artist.”<br />

Awareness Day,<br />

the Kenyan <strong>Hospice</strong> <strong>and</strong> Palliative<br />

of what grieving children might be going through by wearing blue on<br />

Children’s Grief Awareness Day, November 15.<br />

Before they graduate from high school, one in 20 children will have a<br />

parent die—<strong>and</strong> that number doesn’t include those who experience the<br />

death of a brother or sister, a close gr<strong>and</strong>parent, aunt or uncle, or friend.<br />

A grieving child can feel different from their peers <strong>and</strong> feel more alone<br />

than ever, but may appear externally <strong>to</strong> be functioning normally.<br />

Children’s Grief Awareness Day seeks <strong>to</strong> bring attention <strong>to</strong> the fact that<br />

Improving the quality of life for patients <strong>and</strong><br />

families is the foundation of hospice care.<br />

In announcing our affiliation with WellSpan<br />

Health <strong>and</strong> the expansion of our services in<strong>to</strong><br />

all of <strong>York</strong> County, the core of the excitement in<br />

these changes <strong>and</strong> growth is the fact that we can<br />

now support more patients <strong>and</strong> families in need<br />

of our care.<br />

In addition, I am pleased <strong>to</strong> announce our<br />

new name: <strong>Hospice</strong> & Community Care. This<br />

name reflects the broader scope of services we<br />

provide, including hospice <strong>and</strong> palliative care<br />

<strong>and</strong> bereavement support, <strong>and</strong> the entire community we serve.<br />

As we continue <strong>to</strong> grow, we remain forever grateful for the generous<br />

community support we receive that enables us <strong>to</strong> provide our high level of<br />

care <strong>to</strong> Lancaster County <strong>and</strong> surrounding regions, <strong>and</strong> now <strong>to</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

Adams counties.<br />

Amid the excitement of our recent changes, the many staff <strong>and</strong> volunteers<br />

who make the Annual Labor Day Auction such a spectacular event have<br />

remained hard at work <strong>to</strong> ensure another year of amazing Auction items. In<br />

addition <strong>to</strong> original artwork from local artists, like Suk Shuglie, featured in<br />

this Horizons issue, exciting lead items include a week-long resort stay on<br />

Waikiki Beach, sailing adventures, h<strong>and</strong>-made quilts <strong>and</strong> exquisite jewelry.<br />

Of course, our dedicated sports-memorabilia tent will be packed with <strong>to</strong>pname<br />

au<strong>to</strong>graphed footballs, jerseys <strong>and</strong> pho<strong>to</strong>s, plus so much more.<br />
