THIS IS CATAWBA COLLEGE<strong>Catawba</strong> <strong>College</strong> was founded inNewton, North Carolina in 1851 bythe German Reformed Church. In1890, <strong>Catawba</strong> became a coeducational institution,with the first woman graduatecompleting her studies in 1893. Officialsclosed the Newton campus in 1923 andmoved to its present location in Salisbury,re-opening in 1925. In 1957, the Evangelicaland Reformed Church merged to formthe United Church of Christ, with which the<strong>College</strong> maintains affiliation.<strong>Catawba</strong> seeks to serve the Salisbury-Rowan County community through its programsand services. The Roberston<strong>College</strong>-Community Center, a facility built as ajoint venture with the community over 35years ago, houses the Shuford School of PerformingArts and showcases musical and theatreproductions from the college and thecommunity. Similarly, the college’s athletic facilitieshave been enhanced be the local communityand are available to the local residentsas well as the students.In the more than 75 years since <strong>Catawba</strong>opened its doors in the Salisbury community,it has built a tradition of successful graduateswho continue to honor the <strong>College</strong> by theirachievements and enable it through their supportto strengthen with each entering class.These graduates include physicians, attorneys,teachers and college professors, corporate executives,actors and musicians, social workersand others who contribute to our society in avariety of ways.From one building, three-quarters of a centuryago in Salisbury, <strong>Catawba</strong> <strong>College</strong> todayhas grown to a campus of 27 buildings on 276acres, with 189 acres devoted to an outstandingecological preserve. Almost all of thebuildings on campus have undergone renovationsin the recent past and two new buildings,the <strong>Catawba</strong><strong>College</strong> Center for theEnvironment and the<strong>Catawba</strong> Sports Centerare now completed.Over 1,300students representingover 25 states andseveral foreigncountries attend <strong>Catawba</strong>. BInSMICHAEL SWAN ~ Head CoachMichael Swan enters hisfirst season as the headwomen’s soccer coach at<strong>Catawba</strong>. He comes to<strong>Catawba</strong> from King <strong>College</strong> inBristol, TN, where he serves ashead coach for three seasons.At King, Swan’s teams hada record of 41-17-3. Prior tohis stint at King (2007-09) hewas head coach at Virginia Intermont <strong>College</strong>(2003-07). Overall Swan compiled an overallrecord of 92-41-10 and won AppalachianConference regular season and tournamentchampionships in 2007 and 2008 and were runner-upin 2003-06.Swan’s squads were regional champs as wellin 2006 and 2007 and also qualified for theNAIA National Tournament three times (2006-08). Prior to leaving King, Swan was part of thetransition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. Three yearslater, Swan became Director of <strong>Soccer</strong> for boththe men and women at Virginia Intermont.Once Swan arrived at King in 2007, he establishedthe women’s soccer program as a nationalcontender. He had numerous student athleteswho were recognized for both academicachievement and athletic success.Swan holds a United States <strong>Soccer</strong>Federation D License and a United Kingdom FAPreliminary Certificate and FA Leader Award.He resides in Salisbury with his wife, Cresta.with a history minor.
