was able to interview experts in other legal systems, notably those in theCommonwealth <strong>and</strong> continental Europe.1.0.16 The research was undertaken primarily to illuminate the specific areas that theReview was investigating. It was not intended to provide a comprehensive<strong>and</strong> detailed overview of all aspects of criminal procedure in all comparablecommon law or European jurisdictions. In most of the substantive chapters ofthis report, there is a section which discusses how the relevant issues are dealtwith in some other countries. These sections are intended to be illustrativeonly rather than exhaustive.1.0.17 On a more local basis, the Review spent some time at London Road policestation in Glasgow to see at first h<strong>and</strong> how the arrest <strong>and</strong> detention systemoperated. It continued to follow the process, on a separate occasion, throughthe marking of papers at the Procurator Fiscal’s office in Ballater Street <strong>and</strong>onto the cells at the Sheriff Court <strong>and</strong> the ultimate rem<strong>and</strong> or release of theprisoners in the custody court.1.0.18 The Review was particularly grateful for access to detention data gathered byACPOS, which is now in the public domain. Finally, the Reviewcommissioned research, with the help of the Crown Office, to analyse a cohortof cases which were not prosecuted, in the context of considering the impactof the requirement for corroboration. This research is referred to in Chapter7.2 <strong>and</strong> further detail is in Annex A.18
