Into the Woods is a masterpiece of the contemporary American musical. It intertwines several of 

Grimm’s tales into an interpretation that is both illuminating and entertaining. When the play 

explores what happens after “happily ever after,” it challenges our perceptions of those morality tales 

that have shaped our attitudes for generations and continue to define our national zeitgeist. The 

universality of the journey towards maturity – as dreams become defined around values rather than 

desire – is explored through a series of forays into the woods. Our “Forest of Arden” is, indeed, a 

place where dreams manifest, but, as the Witch in our story says, “Wishes do come true, not free.” 

In our production, we have consciously explored the magical qualities of the original tales, while 

managing to keep our emphasis on the humanity of these characters. As is the nature of masterworks, 

we who have reckoned with our life choices will find depth in this work. Those who are just growing 

in maturity, like some of the play’s characters, will find a fresh and funny production. 

Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine created a piece that rarely goes exactly where one might 

expect. This is certainly true of the musical score, and I am pleased to speak for the entire (and 

wonderful) production team when I write that we are proud to work with the talented Mason 

students who have traveled with us “into the woods” during the creative process and emerged with 

ownership of more than just their challenging roles. 

We hope that you enjoy the show and the launch of an ongoing collaboration between the School 

of Music and Theater at Mason to create an exemplary place for the exploration of musical theater.

MEET THE ARTISTS 

Ken Elston (Director) is Chair of Mason’s Theater Department. He holds an M.F.A. from The 

Ohio State University and a B.A. from Temple University, and is the artistic director of the not-forprofit 

theater company Footsteps In Time, which advances history education and promotes a deeper 

understanding of contemporary America through an examination of history through theater, film, 

and the arts. He is also a professional consultant in the area of presentation skills. Ken teaches Acting 

and Directing, and, having studied with Marcel Marceau and other exceptional teaching artists in the 

field, has a specialty in Movement for the Stage. Directing credits include off-Broadway, university, 

and regional theaters. His acting credits include stage, television and film. Stage appearances include 

off-Broadway and regional credits from Theater of the First Amendment, Washington Shakespeare 

Company, the Bush Theater, Missouri Rep, ACT, Intiman, and Bucks County Playhouse. Ken is 

a member of Actor’s Equity, SAG, AFTRA, Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, and the 

Association of Theatre Movement Educators. 

Dennis M. Layendecker; D.M.A.; Col. USAF, Ret. (Conductor, Mason Symphony Orchestra) 

is the Director of the George Mason University School of Music. He holds the Heritage Chair in 

Music and serves as Director of University Orchestras in the College of Visual and Performing Arts 

(CVPA), positions he has held since joining the faculty in August 2009. 

During his 26-year Air Force career, Dr. Layendecker served as a band commander, conductor, 

artistic director, pianist, public spokesperson, educator, and diplomat for the Air Force at home 

and abroad. In July 2002, then Colonel Layendecker assumed command of the United States Air 

Force Band, Washington, D.C. As part of his duties he provided direct musical and ceremonial 

support to the President of the United States and his Cabinet, members of Congress and other 

high-ranking civilian and military leaders nationally and internationally. In addition to his duties 

at the USAF Band, from December 2007, he also served as the Chief of Music for the Air Force. 

During his military career, he led more than 6,000 musical performances worldwide in support of 

public outreach, community relations, troop morale and welfare, and recruitment and retention 

programs for the Air Force and Department of Defense. He officially retired from the Air Force in 

late August 2009. 

Dr. Layendecker is a graduate of the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, where he was 

awarded a Bachelor of Music Education in 1975. He began his conducting studies in 1977 while 

on full piano scholarship attending the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, Belgium. In 1981, 

he earned a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting from Northwestern University in Evanston, 

Illinois, and completed a Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting at The Catholic University of 

America in Washington, D.C., in 1988. Prior to joining the Air Force, Dr. Layendecker served 

on the music faculties of the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, Illinois, and Eastern 

Washington University in Cheney, Washington. He was inducted as a member of the American 

Bandmasters Association in 2006. He has remained active as a conductor and clinician throughout 

his professional career. 

During his distinguished career in the Air Force, Dr. Layendecker led many of America’s finest 

musicians throughout the United States, Asia, the United Kingdom, and Europe—from Los 

Angeles to New York, Vienna to London, and Oslo to Tokyo. He has performed in such notable 

venues as Washington, D.C.’s National Theatre and D.A.R. Constitution Hall; Kodak Theatre in 

Hollywood; Semper Opera, Dresden; Neues Gewandhaus, Leipzig; Royal Albert Hall in London; 

Alte Opera, Frankfurt; and the Beethovenhalle in Bonn. He has led his ensembles before numerous 

world leaders including seven American presidents, Queen Elizabeth of England, and Pope John 

Paul II. His radio and television broadcast credits include appearances on BBC, German Radio and 

Television, Polish National Radio, Radio Luxembourg, RAI Italy, and public radio and national 

television across America.

Lisa Billingham, D.M.A. (Associate Conductor and Musical Coach), Associate Professor of Choral 

Music Education at George Mason University, conducts the University Chorale and teaches 

undergraduate and graduate courses in choral music education. She is the co-advisor for the Mason 

student chapters of American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and Music Educators National 

Conference. She is the President of the Virginia ACDA Chapter and is a planning committee 

member for the Annual Voices United Conference hosted by Virginia, Maryland-D.C., and 

Delaware chapters of ACDA. 

Dr. Billingham’s research interests include the incorporation of Laban Movement Theory in 

conducting pedagogy and the choral rehearsal. She is a Certified Laban Movement Analyst from the 

Integrated Movement Studies Program at the University of Utah and incorporates that theory with 

her private conducting students. Dr. Billingham is active as a clinician for conferences and choirs 

throughout the United States and Europe. She has presented for ACDA, VMEA, two Regional 

ACDA conferences, and at the International Society for Music Education (ISME) Conference in 

Bologna, Italy. 

Dr. Billingham holds a DMA in Choral Conducting from the University of Arizona, an MM in 

Choral Conducting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, and a 

BME in Choral Music Education from Indiana University (Bloomington). Her conducting mentors 

include Bruce Chamberlain, Eph Ehly, James Jordan, Maurice Skones, and Volker Hempfling. 

Dana Maier (Scenic Designer) holds a B.S. from Radford University, and an M.F.A. from University 

of Alabama. She has been teaching courses in Scene Painting and Scene Design at Mason since 

2005. She has designed scenery for Mason Players, Mason Opera, Theater of the First Amendment, 

and the IN Series at the Tivoli Theater in D.C. Dana has assisted many professional designers, 

the majority of the assists occurring during her M.F.A. Residency at the Alabama Shakespeare 

Festival, where she served as the on-site Assistant Scene Designer to all Guest Scene Designers. 

Dana has worked as a professional scenic painter within the D.C. metropolitan area, with her work 

appearing at the Barns of Wolf Trap, The Filene Center, Ford’s Theater, Folger Shakespeare Theater, 

Washington Opera, and the Smithsonian. She has worked with BBC America and BET. She also 

served several seasons as the Charge Scene Artist for Wolf Trap Opera Company. Dana enjoys her 

added roles as a scene painting consultant and a mentor to design students, discussing concepts and 

helping student designers and craftspeople work through the challenges of a working production. 

Howard Vincent Kurtz (Costume Designer) is the Associate Professor of Theater at Mason, where 

he teaches costume design, fashion history, pattern making, makeup design, and an introduction to 

the theater arts for non-majors. Professor Kurtz has been honored to receive Mason’s Outstanding 

Excellence in Teaching Award, The Fenwick Library Fellowship for Research Award, and numerous 

Outstanding Service awards. He has designed costumes at many regional and local theaters in the 

Washington, D.C. area and was honored to receive the Helen Hayes Outstanding Costume Design 

Award. Howard is also the Associate Curator of Costumes and Textiles at the Hillwood Museum 

in Washington, D.C. He is currently writing a comprehensive book on the costume and textile 

collections at Hillwood. Professor Kurtz is a member of United Scenic Artists Costume Division, 

the United States Institute of Theater Technology, the Costume Society of America, the Textile 

Society of America, and the American Association of Museums. 

Liz Replogle (Lighting Designer) is a freelance lighting designer based in the Washington, D.C. 

area. Professional design credits include The Life of Galileo, presented jointly by the Theater of the 

First Amendment and the Mason Players; The Secret Marriage and Beautybeast with Aurora Opera; 

Madama Butterfly with Catholic University Opera; Amahl and the Night Visitors and the Opera Gala 

Concert with the George Mason Opera; Tether with the Doorway Arts Ensemble; and the Move 

Me! Arts Experience with Bowen McCauley Dance. Upcoming projects include a production by the 

Baltimore Dance Project. Liz has an M.F.A. in Lighting Design from Indiana University. 

Kevin Dunayer (Sound Designer) holds a B.A. from University of North Carolina, Ashville 

and an M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts. Kevin has designed sound for over 300

productions. His past sound design credits include Alley Theatre (Houston, Texas); Colony Theater 

(Burbank, California); Dallas Theatre Center; the Alabama, Colorado, Kentucky and North 

Carolina Shakespeare Festivals; English Theatre of Frankfurt (Germany); GeVa Theatre (Rochester, 

New York); Studio Arena Theatre (Buffalo, New York); LA Theatre Works; Meadow Brook Theatre 

Company; Merrimack Repertory Theater; Syracuse Stage; Two River Theatre Company; Virginia 

Stage Company; and Theater of the First Amendment. Kevin was the Resident Sound Designer 

at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival for over 20 years, designing sound for over 75 productions. 

Sound engineer credits include: The American Image Awards, Director’s Guild Awards, President 

Clinton’s 50th Birthday celebration with Whoopi Goldberg, and the 1997 Grammy & Rhythm and 

Blues Awards. Kevin has been nominated and has won several awards for his work, including the 

2009 Denver Post Ovation Award and the 2010 Daily Camera Eye Award. Additionally, Kevin is 

the Events Production and Operations Manager at Mason. 

Nerissa Hart (Properties Mistress) is a sophomore from Stafford, Virginia, pursuing a B.F.A. in 

Stage and Screen with a concentration in Performance. Credits: Assistant Stage Manager, Mason

Beth Hoffmann (Dramaturg) received her Ph.D. in Performance Studies from the University of 

California, Berkeley (2008). Her research focuses on the aesthetics and politics of contemporary 

British performance, ranging from traditional drama to visually-based live art. Her areas of 

specialization include modern and contemporary Anglo-European drama; British live art, 

“alternative performance” and experimental theatre; British cultural studies; and performance 

theory with an emphasis on intersections of textuality, performativity, and subjectivity. At Mason, 

Professor Hoffmann has taught classes on Modern Drama, 20th Century British and Irish Drama, 

Postcolonial Drama, Performance and Social Change, and, from 2010 to 2012, led the Winter 

Break London Theatre Tour for Mason’s Center for Global Education. 

Barbara Powderly (Graphic Designer/Illustrator) holds a B.F.A. in Illustration from the Rhode Island 

School of Design and an M.A. in Liberal Arts, specializing in Graphic Design and Communication, 

from Monmouth University. She is the Marketing and Outreach Manager for the School of Music 

at Mason. She has marketed the arts for Monmouth University, taught graphic design and art 

appreciation in Monmouth University’s Art and Design Department, and designed books for 

Dutton Children’s Books. She has consulted for several publishers in New York City and worked 

with numerous award-winning illustrators. Her design work has been distributed nationally and 

internationally. Her illustrations and paintings have been exhibited at the Society of Illustrators, 

Monmouth University, and the Guild of Creative Art. 

Laurel Dunayer (Costume Shop Supervisor) has an M.F.A. in Theatre-Costume Design from the 

University of Illinois, and worked for six years in New York City building costumes for Broadway 

shows. Favorites include: The Rocky Horror Show, Kiss Me Kate, and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Mrs. 

Dunayer spent seven seasons as a Master Draper at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival in Boulder, 

Colorado, and six seasons at American Players Theater in Spring Green, Wisconsin. She joined the 

staff of George Mason University in 2006. 

Stephanie Seltman (Production Stage Manager) is a 2007 Mason Theater graduate and has been 

working as a Stage Manager, both as a student and professionally, for the past nine years. While at 

Mason, she worked many technical aspects of performances, such as Master Electrician, Costume 

Designer, Set Designer, Board Ops, and Stage Management. Since graduating, she has worked as 

a Production Assistant at Shakespeare Theatre Company, Assistant Stage Manager for Wolf Trap 

Opera Company, Stage Manager for George Mason Dance Company, and in a variety of roles for 

the Center for the Arts: Stage Managing, Stage Hand and Artist Services.

Melissa Berkowitz (Florinda) is a sophomore from McLean, Virginia, majoring in Theater with
