THE SUNDIALThe original Sundial Ski Lodge,constructed in 1995, wasdestroyed by fire on February12, 2012. On December 24,the Sundial Lodge opened tothe public with a new look anda host of new amenities. Theoriginal sundial sculpture, whichsurvived the blaze stands at theentrance of the new facility asa reminder of the past and agateway to the future.In addition to the ski operationsand rental shop, the new Sundialhouses Apex, a casual bar anddining outlet, along with bowlingalleys, arcade games, a retail shopand the Adventure Center. Oncerecognized as the hub of winteractivities, the Sundial will nowbe open and offering dining andactivity options year-round.Designed by DRS Architectsof Pittsburgh, the new facilityalso has a different look bothinside and out featuring 200feet of nearly continuous floorto ceiling curtain wall offeringpanoramic mountaintop viewsfrom the bar, dining room andoutdoor terraces. The dining andbar area of Apex sit beneath acustom-designed heavy timberroof structure of natural Douglasfir while the building’s focal pointis certain to be the dramaticnatural stone hearth and thechimney towering a full twostories through the heart of thelodge.26
