For Point of Use or Zoned/Group Control, for Central RecirculationSystems or Emergency Equipment, Armstrong Presents…Control handle allows for a wide rangeof temperature adjustment.(Rada 40/R and 50/R have a removable key.)Over 70 years of thermostaticmixing valve manufacturingapplications know-how.Dual high-tech temperature-sensingelements (thermostats) constantly monitoroutlet temperature and instantly react tocorrect changes caused by inlet pressure ortemperature fluctuations. Dual thermostatsprovide redundancy in case of individualthermostat failure.Unique internal hub design can beset to restrict control handle movementwith single-temperature lock-out ormaximum-temperature stop feature.(Rada 40/R and 50/R have a removable key.)Internal actuator/bellows assemblytransfers thermostat expansioninstantly to proportioning mechanism.High-flow mixing valves designedspecifically to maintain outlettemperatures ±2°F at very lowflow rates. If hot water supply fails, valve will completely shutoff prior to a 5°F temperaturefall from outlet set point(215, 320/R and 425/R).(“Failure mode” constant coldwater flow feature is availableon Rada Z358 Series.)Powerful internal hydraulicaction breaks away scaledeposits to ensure longservice life.Integral inlet checkvalves supplied with allmodels but not shown. If cold water supply fails, valve will completely shutoff prior to a 5°F outlettemperature rise fromoutlet set point(215, 320/R and 425/R).Shuttle mechanism corrects inletsupply proportions to maintain aconstant outlet temperature.High-tension return spring ensuresswift shuttle correction.Clever separator seal designcontrols “seepage” and allowsthe valve to mix to within 5°F ofeither inlet supply temperature.(215, 320/R and 425/R).What do these technical benefits mean in field application terms? How about a full range of Thermostatic Mixing Valves that canalso be manifolded to produce a series of Flexi-Flo preplumbedassemblies that will allow you to:• be less concerned about high mineral content water because ofthe powerful internal action and the use of high-tech polymersand coatings• specify or use fewer valves per building, because even our largevalves have remarkable minimum flow requirements• use combinations of large valves for high flow demand buildingswithout the need to tie in a small mixing valve to handle the lowcirculating pump-only flow rate• specify or use group controllers and point-of-use valves assecondary mixers even when the central mixing valve is deliveringlow temperature (120°F/49°C or below as legislated) recirculatedhot water (most mixing valves require a significant differentialbetween hot and blend)• rest assured that many of our field representatives are either“degreed” engineers or engineered product specialists• deliver ANSI recommended “tepid” water with “failure mode”constant cold water flow to emergency fixtures• specify and install mixing valves that meet ASSE 1016,ASSE 1017 and CSA B125 where applicable4Hot Water Group, 221 Armstrong Blvd., P.O. Rada, ®the World’s Most Advanced Technologyin Mixed Water Temperature Control. When it comes to mixed water temperature control, there’s a wordfor the ultimate in safety and accuracy—Rada. Hot and cold watermixing valves have a simple but critically important function in life—to provide a consistent means of regulating water temperature at orbefore a point of use. Sounds simple enough, right? But mixingvalves that depend on wax or spirit-filled capsules or old-fashionedbimetal coils as their thermostats have been anything but simple.Usually they leave you to choose between two necessary benefits:1) a powerful force to resist mineral deposition and control theproportioning device or2) a fast reaction time. The first in a family of Electronic Mixing Centers (EMC) is featuredon pages 24 through 27. Through electronic mixing we have beenable to achieve pinpoint control and accuracy at a level that is, inreality, impossible with a thermostatic mixing valve. With PC and building management system interface capability, andprogramming, data logging, alarm, and self-diagnostic features,Rada EMCs offer design options and system solutions unavailablefrom any other resource.Rada thinks you deserve both. And we deliver both with theRada principle. Why the World Needs Rada Mixing ValvesThe thermostatic mixing valve has long been regarded as an essentialmeans of ensuring that premixed hot water for general hygiene useis maintained at a safe, comfortable temperature. In addition, themultitude of process applications, along with an ever-presentrequirement for industrial safety, have increased the demand foraccurately controlled hot water at specific temperatures.Clearly, the perfect thermostatic mixing valve would combine maximumsensitivity with the ability to generate a force powerful enoughto resist mineral deposit and transmit the reaction quickly. In otherwords, the ideal mixing valve would deliver sensitivity and accuracyplus a forceful and superfast reaction time.Enter the Rada PrincipleThe Rada unit contains a corrosion-resistant flexible metal bellowsconnected to a coiled copper tube, providing a large surface area incontact with the blended water. The tube is filled with a polyeutecticcompound highly sensitive to temperature change, which almostimmediately extends or contracts the bellows when a temperaturechange occurs.Bimetal principlehas very little powerThe powerful axial force drives a proportioning mechanism to controlhot and cold water mixing more precisely than ever before, thusmaintaining a virtually constant outlet temperature. The Rada method of mixed water temperature control ends foreverthe argument over which principle—bimetal or filled capsule—issuperior. Now it’s clear: Both are outdated by Rada mixing valvesfrom Armstrong.Wax/spirit-filled capsule principlehas a slow reaction timeThe Next FrontierThermostatic water-mixing technology in various forms has beenaround since the early 1900s, with Rada firmly planted on thedevelopmental leading edge. We believe that water mixing is readyfor an evolutionary quantum leap and that the next frontier mustfeature advanced, low-voltage electronics.Rada principleHot Water Group, 221 Armstrong Blvd., P.O. Rada ®Single Point & Zoned/Group Control SystemsThermostatic Mixing ValvesRada Single Point and Zoned/Group Control Systems featurea series of 6 individual Thermostatic Mixing Valves designedspecifically for use in non-return “dead leg” applications. The complete range has been designed to offer accuratetemperature control in installations where there are diverseflow requirements between .5 and 295 gpm (1.9 and 1,078 lpm).SizingTo size a mixing valve for single open outlet applications, simplymatch the required flow rate with the available maintained inletwater pressure. Correlate with required minimum flow rate andmake a selection. When sizing for zoned or group control applications, ensure thatthere is sufficient residual pressure (20 psi minimum is suggested)after the mixing valve to satisfactorily operate the outlet fixtures atrealistic maximum simultaneous demand.Rada Thermostatic Mixing Valves (gpm)ModelPressure Drop (psi)5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 50Min. Rada ®Solutions for Emergency Fixture ControlRada Z358 series has been designed specifically to provide tepidwater to emergency fixtures as detailed in ANSI Z358.1-1998.ANSI Z358.1-1998 Related ExcerptsSections 4.6.6, 5.4.6, 7.4.6, 9.4.5: “Delivered flushingfluid temperature shall be tepid.”Definition Tepid: Moderately warm; lukewarm.Section 4.1: “Emergency showerheads shall be capableof delivering a minimum of 75.5 liters per minute (20 gpm).”Section 5.1.5: “Eyewash equipment shall be capable ofdelivering flushing fluid to the eyes not less than 1.5 lpm(0.4 gpm).”Section 7.1.4: “Plumbed eye/facewash equipment shallbe capable of delivering flushing fluid to the eyes not lessthan 11.4 liters per minute (3.0 gpm).”Section 8.1: “Drench hoses shall deliver a minimum of11.4 liters per minute of flushing fluid (3.0 gpm).”The SolutionRada Electronic Mixing Centers (EMC) offer a packaged solutionwith an unparalleled level of accuracy, control and reliability. TheEMC is available with site-programmable elements such as anoff-hour high temperature flush and/or a system dump to controlbacteria. In addition, the “out of range” visual and audible alertfeature gives the system operator a vitally important audit capability. The superior technology available with the EMC allows Armstrong, the system designer, the installer and the facility owner/operatorto manufacture, specify, install and operate a system that canclearly be termed state-of-the-art.For details on the EMC, including the products’ EOSand third-party BMS interface capability, refer to previouspages 24 through 27, Rada Solutions for Central RecirculationSystem Control—Electronic.Point of UseRada Z358-20 and Z358-40 Thermostatic Mixing Valves aresuitable for installation at or near a point of use for directtepid water supply to an emergency fixture or grouping offixtures. Groups of fixtures must meet the valve’s flow capacityrequirements if there is a potential for simultaneous operation.Central Recirculation System ControlRecirculated, tepid loops serving emergency fixtures arefundamentally different in application from standard institutionalhot water recirculating systems. The limited system draw-offrequirement of the emergency fixture circuit portends limitedsystem audit capability and a subsequent underlying systemmanagement concern. In other words, institutional loops with frequent draw-offs atdiverse flow rates for hand washing, showering and bathingcommunicate with building management on a regular basis(the lavatory is too hot, the shower is too cold, etc.). The capacityexists to make adjustments and corrections.Closed loops for emergency fixtures, on the other hand, requireinfrequent but often a large and sudden volume of water that mustbe in the correct temperature range every time. Without somelevel of manual or automated system monitoring and correction, along with an aggressive system maintenance protocol, tepidloops present a challenge. Therefore, Rada Thermostatic Mixing Valves are not recommendedfor installation as central controllers for recirculated tepid waterloops. Rada ®Solutions for Emergency Fixture ControlRada Z358-20Rada Z358-20 has been designed specifically to provide tepidwater to emergency fixtures as detailed in ANSI Z358.1-1998specifications.Z358-20 is a Thermostatic Mixing Valve of “sealed for life”disposable cartridge construction. Compact design and topor bottom blended water outlet make Z358-20 ideal for OEM,new construction and upgrade/retrofit installations. For Emergency Drench Showers. Rada Z358-20 will pass ANSIspecified minimum of 20 gpm/76 lpm (actual 23 gpm/87 lpm)and will flow a minimum of 10 gpm (38 lpm) from direct coldwater supply in hot failure mode at 40 psi (2.7 bar) maintainedequal inlet supply pressure. For Emergency Eye Wash Stations. For single or multiplefixture installation, Rada Z358-20 will control accurately atflow rates from 20 gpm (76 lpm) to below 1 gpm (3.8 lpm).In flow applications between 20 gpm (76 lpm) and 10 gpm(38 lpm), Z358-20 will pass approximately 50% of original flowsetting in hot failure mode.In flow applications between 10 gpm (38 lpm) and 5 gpm (19 lpm),Z358-20 will pass approximately 80% of original flow setting inhot failure mode.In flow applications below 5 gpm (19 lpm), Z358-20 will passapproximately 95% of original flow setting in hot failure mode.Rada Z358-20 Offers:User Safety•Site Adjustable—Mechanical maximum-temperature limit stopand single-temperature locking features as a function of thetemperature control handle design.• Thermal shutdown feature is designed to protect user fromunsafe water temperatures or hot water/chemical reaction shouldcold supply be interrupted during use.• Unique constant cold water flow design ensures that in theevent of a hot supply failure the Rada Z358-20 will allow coldwater to flow to fixture.• Unique constant cold water flow feature allows the inlet hotwater supply to be set within a prescribed range, thus limitingthe potential outlet temperature to a safe maximum in theevent of misadjustment, unauthorized tampering or thermostatfailure. This feature presumes that the correct initialcommissioning was performed and that the cold watersupply has not been interrupted.Refer to Table 1: Safe Maximum Inlet Hot WaterSupply Temperature.Economy. New technology and state-of-the-art polymer internalcomponents reduce cost and resist mineral deposition. Singlecorrosion-resistant “no spare parts” replaceable cartridge designreduces field maintenance time.Comfort. Maintains a constant outlet temperature, which canbe preset to meet ANSI Z358.1-1998 requirements. Controlledblended water at emergency fixtures will allow a user in distressto access flushing water at temperatures where required exposurecan be sustained.IMPORTANT NOTE: The replaceable cartridge design and functionalsimplicity of the Rada Z358-20 make the regular preventivemaintenance (PM) program, which this type of applicationmandates, easier to effect.Technical Specifications•••1" (25 mm) NPT inlets and 3/4" (20 mm) NPT outlet(s)Chrome-plated DZR brass/polymer construction with bright“Safety Yellow” control handle.Operating pressures must be nominally equalMaximum: 100 psi (6.9 bar)*Minimum: 40 psi (2.7 bar) drench showers20 psi (1.4 bar) eye washIntegral thermometer•• Integral replaceable cartridge-type inlet check valves• Dual thermostatic elements• Integral replaceable inlet strainers• 10 gpm (38 lpm) constant cold water flow in hot failure modeto open outlet at 40 psi (2.7 bar) pressure drop• Shipping weight 10 lb (4.5 kg)*High water pressures may deliver a volume and spray forcethat are injurious to the user. Rada ®Solutions for Emergency Fixture ControlRada Z358-40Rada Z358-40 has been designed specifically to provide tepidwater to emergency fixtures as detailed in ANSI Z358.1-1998specifications.Z358-40 is a Thermostatic Mixing Valve designed specifically todeliver tepid water to emergency fixtures. Compact design andtop or bottom blended water outlet makes Z358-40 ideal forOEM, new construction and upgrade/retrofit installations. For Emergency Drench Showers. Rada Z358-40 will passANSI specified minimum of 20 gpm (75.7 lpm)—actual 46 gpm(147 lpm)—and will flow a minimum of 15 gpm (57 lpm) fromdirect cold water supply in hot failure mode at 45 psi (3 bar)pressure drop. For Emergency Eye Wash Stations. For single or multiplefixture installation, Rada Z358-40 will control accurately atflow rates from 40 gpm (151 lpm) to below 2 gpm (7 lpm)—actual 46 gpm @ 45 psi pressure drop.In 40 gpm (151 lpm) flow applications, Z358-40 will passapproximately 40% of original flow setting in hot failure mode.In 30 gpm (114 lpm) flow applications, Z358-40 will passapproximately 50% of original flow setting in hot failure mode.In 15 gpm (57 lpm) flow applications, Z358-40 will passapproximately 75% of original flow setting in hot failure mode.Rada Z358-40 OffersSafety.•Site Adjustable—Mechanical maximum temperature limitstop and single temperature locking features as functionsof the temperature control handle design.• Thermal shutdown feature is designed to protect user fromunsafe water temperatures or hot water/chemical reactionshould cold supply be interrupted during use.• Unique constant cold water flow design ensures that in theevent of a hot supply failure the Rada Z358-40 will allow coldwater to flow to fixture.• Unique constant cold water flow feature allows the inlethot water supply to be set within a prescribed range, thuslimiting the potential outlet temperature to a safe maximumin the event of misadjustment, unauthorized tampering orthermostat failure. This feature presumes that the correctinitial commissioning was performed and that the coldwater supply has not been interrupted.Refer to Table 1. Safe Maximum Inlet Hot Water SupplyTemperature, at right.Economy. New technology and state-of-the-art materials reducecost. Design and functional simplicity reduce field maintenanceand parts stocking requirements.Comfort. Maintains a constant outlet temperature, which canbe preset to meet ANSI Z358.1-1998 requirements. Controlledblended water at emergency fixtures will allow a user in distressto access flushing water at temperatures where required exposurecan be sustained.IMPORTANT NOTE: The replaceable cartridge design andfunctional simplicity of the Rada Z358-40 make the regularpreventative maintenance (PM) program, which this type ofapplication mandates, easier to effect.Technical Specifications••1-1/4" (32 mm) NPT inlets and 1-1/4" (32 mm) NPT outlet(s)Chrome-plated DZR brass/polymer construction with bright“Safety Yellow” control handle.Operating pressures must be nominally equalMaximum: 100 psi (6.9 bar)*Minimum: 40 psi (2.7 bar) drench showers20 psi (1.4 bar) eye washMaximum recommended pressure drop 75 psi (5 bar)Maximum recommended outlet flow 53 gpm (200 lpm)Integral thermometerIntegral replaceable cartridge-type inlet check valvesIntegral replaceable inlet strainersDual thermostatic elements15 gpm (57 lpm) constant cold water flow in hot failure modeto open outlet at 45 psi (3 bar) pressure dropShipping weight 18 lb (8 kg)•••••••••*High water pressures may deliver a volume and spray forcethat are injurious to the user.
