The cattlemarket we are experiencing is like none other.Simmental genetics are helping the commercialcattleman put more money in his pocket than everbefore. We have to play this market as smartly aspossible to maximize the most we can as seedstockproducers. We have to market our bulls andreplacement females better than we ever have. Asan association, we have stumbled in not promotingour products to fellow cattlemen. We do havemajor changes planned. We must have your inputin implementing these changes; we must refocusour efforts as a breed to selling quality seedstockand reconnect with the commercial cattleman. Wemust be more than a “show heifer” state. Again, weneed to come together, strategize and “re-invent”ourselves. Our annual meeting is a “must attend”event of this year. It will be informative, fun andhopefully reignite friendships. We have some major events involving two greatmembers. First, Sam Smith of Hilltop Simmentalswas awarded the prestigious “Golden HerdbookAward.” Sam and his family have been great supportersof the OSSA and I’m proud to call him afriend. Bobby Willis was elected one of the SouthCentral trustees by his fellow members to the ASAboard. Congratulations Bobby, we look forward toyou representing us in Bozeman. Please mark your calendar for the annual meetingand be a part of the fun.Sincerely,Kurt HamburgerPresidentOSSA | 3

Simmentals haveplayed a veryimportant role inthe life of the 2004 Juniorof the Year recipient. NickiJaques, Hinton, Oklahoma, was born into a strongSimmental backgroundthat had been establishedby her father Jon in 1977.It was only natural to followthe course that hadalready been set beforeher. In 1990, Nicki’s firstcow was a fullblood thatproduced a heifer calf,OSSA Junior of the YearOSSA Junior of the YearNicki Jaqueswhich she showed at the young age of five. That was also the same year that shejoined the OJSSA and was elected S.W. District Representative at the annual meeting.Nicki continued to follow “big sister” Dusty and their mother Carolyn aroundto many shows and events, but was exhibiting sheep from her own flock of sixtyhead. At age eleven Nicki took a huge leap. She sold her entire flock of registeredSouthdown and Shropshire sheep to purchase a donor prospect from H&HSimmentals. That heifer was “Red Dawn.” She was the cornerstone of Nicki’s herd.According to ASA data, Nicki has registered 115 head of Simmentals from 1990 tothe present date.Nicki has held OJSSA offices and titles such as District Representative, Secretary,Vice-President, President, Princess and Queen. She has also been a part of manyother organizations including Oklahoma Junior Cattleman’s Association, OklahomaClub Calf Association, American Quarter Horse Association, and the OklahomaFFA Organization. Nicki’s success as a livestock judge with the Hinton FFA Chapterplaced her as fifth overall individual at the National FFA Livestock JudgingContest her senior year. That award was followed by an invitation to judge at theInternational Livestock Tour that began in Scotland and finished in Germany whereshe was awarded second high individual in the final international rankings. Nickihas won numerous honors in many organizations. Some of the more outstandingones are, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, Oklahoma State FFANon-Traditional Student (for her work in embryo transfer), Connors State Collegelivestock judging scholarship and American Junior Simmental Association Bronzeand Silver Awards.Connors State College, Warner, Oklahoma, is the present home of Nicki. OSSA MembershipFamily of the YearTake one determinedyoung girl, an Angusheifer, bought becauseher Ag teacher said she needed“hands on experience in largeanimals to be a vet,” add onescrawny long-legged boy, anequally scrawny, long-legged,orphaned, bottle-fed, redSimmental calf walking into theshow ring for their first show,a mother and dad that didnot have one bit of a farmingbackground and what do youget? You get a heck of a lot ofsurprises and several decisionsthat would shape this family’s life.October 1991 was a turningOSSA Family of the YearSteven, Brenda & Littleton Fowlerpoint in the orderly life of the Fowler family. Litt, Brenda, Shanda, and Steven hadjust moved from Oklahoma City and were no longer big city folks. They were nowcountry dwellers in the middle of Newcastle, a community with a very active 4-H andFFA. Little did the Fowlers know how quickly this move would alter and change thedirection of their lives and the surprises those changes would bring.Shanda wasted no time jumping into the FFA activities showing pigs and competingin public speaking. Soon she had convinced her mom to co-sign a loan for an Angusheifer. She told her daddy “the heifer would be done showing at the same time shewould leave for college.” Two years later Shanda went to college, and the heifer stayedand became the cornerstone of the Fowler’s crossbreeding program.Steven soon gave up band and basketball, tried his hand at showing pigs but reallypreferred to work in the cattle barn. Terry Garvin, a local Simmental breeder, boughtan orphan calf and called to ask if Steven wanted to buy it as a possible show heifer.Litt would get a big surprise when he came home from work to find Brenda and thekids in the back yard trying to decide where and how they could fit another heifer inthe small fenced area. Two months later that long-legged boy and that long-leggedcalf, Tawanda, nervously walked into the ring of the Newcastle Fall Livestock Show. TheFowlers were now in the purebred Simmental business. Steven would soon purchaseanother heifer from Terry Garvin and Litt would extend the fence line once again.Eventually the Fowler family discovered the OSSA, and became a willing and activemember. They have participated in several Regionals, National Classics, attendedannual meetings and helped with organization functions in any way they were needed.Steven served one term as president of the OJSSA, was the 1999 OJSSA Junior ofthe Year and obtained the AJSA Silver Merit award. He now works as a Lecturer atOklahoma State University and is currently serving on the OSSA Board of Directors.Shanda is married and is a practicing veterinarian in Oklahoma City. Brenda and Littnow manage the Fowler’s small herd of Simmental and Simmental-influenced cattle.18 | OSSA

Although the first officialherdbook was established in the SwissCanton of Berne in 1806, there is evidenceof large, productive "red andwhite" cattle being found much earlierin ecclesiastical and secular propertyrecords of Western Switzerland. Thosered and white animals were highlysought because of their "rapid growthdevelopment; outstanding productionof milk, butter and cheese; and for theiruse as draft animals." They were knownfor their gentle nature, impressive statureand excellent dairy qualities. As early as 1785, the Swiss Parliamentlimited exports because of a shortageof cattle to meet their own needs. The Swiss "Red and White SpottedSimmental Cattle Association" wasformed in 1890.Since its origin in Switzerland, thebreed has spread to all six continents.Total numbers are estimated between40 and 60 million Simmental cattleworldwide, with more than half inEurope. The worldwide spread wasgradual until the late 1960s. Recordsshow that a few animals were exportedto Italy as early as the 1400s. During the19th century, Simmental were distributedthrough most of Eastern Europe, theBalkans and Russia, ultimately reachingSouth Africa in 1895. Guatemala importedthe first Simmental cattle into theWestern Hemisphere in 1897, with Brazilfollowing in 1918 and Argentina in 1922.There are unsubstantiated reportsfrom a variety of sources indicatingSimmental cattle arrived in the UnitedStates before the turn of the century.Simmental were reported as early as1887 in Illinois, according to one source;in 1895 in New Jersey; and in New YorkOSSA | 27

and New Mexico around the 1916-1920period. An ad in an 1896 issue of theBreeder's Gazette, published in Chicago, also made reference to "Simmenthal"cattle. Apparently, those early importsdid not capture the imagination of theAmerican cattleman and the Simmentalinfluence died quietly away until theywere reintroduced in the late 1960s.The breed made its most recentappearance in North America when aCanadian, Travers Smith, imported thefamed bull "Parisien" from France in1967. Semen was introduced into theUnited States that same year, with thefirst half-blood Simmental calf bornat Geyser, MT, in February, 1968. TheAmerican Simmental Association wasformed in October, 1968. Simmentalspread to Britain, Ireland and Norwayin 1970 and to Sweden and otherNorthern European countries shortlythereafter. The first purebred bull wasimported into the United States in1971 and Australia received Simmentalsemen and live animals in 1972. TheWorld Simmental Federation (WSF)was formed in Zagreb, Yugoslavia in1974. The purpose of the WSF was tounify Simmental breeders around theworld and provide them with a vehiclethrough which they could exchangeresearch and information and increasethe influence and importance of theSimmental breed.Selection in Europe was initiallyfor three features: milk, meat and asdraft animals. The demand for workinganimals is greatly reduced today butmuscularity and high milk productionare still important to the success ofSimmental. The breed is known by a varietyof names, including "Fleckvieh" inGermany; "Pie Rouge", "Montbeliarde",and "Abondance" in France; and"Pezzata Rosa" in Italy. The Simmentalname is derived from their original loca-28 | OSSAtion, the Simme Valley of Switzerland. In German, Thal or Tal means valley, thus the name literally means "SimmeValley".Simmental have a number of importantattributes. They are widely distributedthroughout the world, implyingadaptability to varied environments andmanagement practices. They have continuedto thrive over hundreds of years, implying utility, functional efficiencyand productivity; and they are second innumbers, only to Brahman, among allbreeds worldwide. The American Simmental Association(ASA) was founded by a contingent ofbreeders who came from other breedbackgrounds and shared a commongoal of establishing a breed base onsound, performance principles. Thus,in its 30+ years of existence, ASA hasoften been in the forefront of beefindustry innovation and progress. In1971, ASA published the first beef breedsire summary, and since that time has:1) initiated a cow recognition program;2) developed Simbrah, a heat tolerant,insect-resistant breed combining thegenetics of Simmental and Brahman; 3)developed the first multi-breed EPDs;4) been a leader in incorporating performancedata into the show ring; and, 5)more recently, established the industrystandard for proving carcass merit. Mostother breeds have followed the leadershipof ASA.The growth of Simmental cattle inNorth America is really a reflectionof what has already occurred in mostagricultural countries of the world. Itappears certain that Simmental willcontinue to play an important role inthe future of the American beef producer.
