<strong>Leather</strong> / <strong>Skin</strong> / <strong>Hide</strong> <strong>Processing</strong> <strong>Industry</strong> (Tannery)Pollutant Concentration in mg/l, except pH Quantum per rawhide processedWastewater generation - 28 m 3 / tonne* for effluent discharged into inland surface waters BOD limit shall be made stricter to 30 mg/lby the concerned SPCBSource: EPA Notification [G.S.R.415 (E), 5th May 1992]3.5.3 Pending and proposed regulatory requirementsAction points proposed by the CPCB in the CREP document for the tannery industries forthe following:Chrome Recovery− All chrome tanning units in the county should have the Chrome Recovery Planteither on individual basis or on collective basis in the form of Common ChromeRecovery Plant and use the recovered chrome in the tanning process.− Common Chrome Recovery Plant is to be installed and commissioned at Kanpur,for which the feasibility report has already been prepared.− Recovered chromium is to be utilized in tanning process.Waste Minimization Measures− Waste minimization circles should be formed in all the clusters of tanneries in thecountry to implement waste minimization measures and for adoption of cleantechnologies.− Efforts should be taken to implement the waste minimization measures in all thetanneries in the country and gradually made obligatory with time to the tanneryunitsReduction of Water Consumption in Tanneries− All tanneries should install water meters and flow meters to measure actualconsumption and wastewater discharge− Water consumption rates should be brought down to 28 m 3 /tonnes of hides bytaking all waste minimization measures.Compliance of Standards - All Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETP) andEffluent Treatment Plants (ETP) should take the following measures− Employ qualified and well-trained staff for operation and maintenance (O&M) ofthe ETP/CETPs− Installation of automatic monitoring instruments− Interlocking of manufacturing processes with the ETP operation− Separate energy meters for ETPs/CETPs− Open anaerobic lagoons should be converted into closed systems with gas recovery− For health and safety of workers in the industry and the ETP/CETP, guidelinesdeveloped by the CPCB should be implemented− All major tannery units should take up environmental auditing on an yearly basis− Major tannery units and CETPs should attempt to obtain ISO-14000 certification− Tannery units and CETP management should take up modifications/ upgrade of theCETPs/ETPs wherever necessaryTGM for Tanneries August 20103-28
